Wearing green today my way. I don’t really celebrate the institution that starved, manipulated, and beat the traditions out of my Irish ancestors; instead I choose to think of my ancestors themselves. I think about the land that nurtured the people who proceeded me. I grieve the culture that was not passed down to us as it should have been. I delight in their blood that flows through my veins. I wonder at the books where I can learn more about old traditions and reclaim what I can with gratitude. I sing because of their old voices ringing in my synapses. I hope to live up to and surpass their wildest dreams. I strive to create beauty with pictures and words in honor of them. I fight to make the world a bit more free because they did too. I learn because there’s nothing worse than when the oppressed become the oppressors. I try to be brave because I know that they were, or I wouldn’t be here. I grow because with every bloodline comes baggage that it’s our duty to heal so that the next generations baggage can be lessened. I am on my ancestral land in the middle of a dry river bed. The Spanish and Mexican called this body of water the Santa Ana River after the earthquake that happened when they first tried to cross in 1769 on St Anne’s feast day patrontress saint of Grandmothers and horseback riders. The native people, the Tongva or Kizh called the river Wanaawna. I’m here to feel in my bones and blood the maternal line, ghosts of Christmas past, for the paranormal historical fiction that is my next book. I brought the book Magic in your Genes by @iamcairelle Cairelle Crow to help me with ritual to open that portal. I flipped open the book, such a fan of bibliomancy. I landed on a page for a ritual to acknowledge the end of the mother line. From this hotel room, I’m looking out at the hills at my mothers mothers mothers have roamed for over 200 years here in the middle of Orange County California. We had a family Rancho of 62,000 acres. This River used to flood and so I’m here to ask questions. The ritual calls for Kunzite which I didn’t have so I held up a picture of the crystal and called it in like we would any Goddess or herbal ally as I honored and named ten grandmothers. Most of them born and raised on this land. The other mothers are from royal presidios in Mexico, going back 7,000 years to Jalisco. I am there last daughter of my line. I birthed sons and my sisters had daughters so the matriarch will continue. How did I know I would find the perfect ritual? How are you celebrating Samhain this year? Earlier this year my Nana passed, so all the rituals I do this Samhain will be in her honour. Making contact with her as the veil thins and sending her as many blessings as I can on her journey back to source. Her life was a beautiful guiding light for me. A fiery Scottish scorpio, she taught me about angels, the second sight, and how to reconnect to my spirituality. Most of that wasn't on purpose, but was just the side effect of being near who she was as a person. Her affinity for ladybugs, crystals, and a life long search for the best luck will stay with me until my end. I am beyond grateful to know her blood runs through my veins. I am grateful for my mother and her lineage as much as I am grateful for my father and his lineage. This life is a blessing and I am honoured to be living it here and now. We usually talk about ancestors as a collective group which can be edifying when you consider the vast number of beings throughout your lineage who surround you and support you. When you’re facing a difficult situation, knowing the strength and power and number of those who stand beside and behind you in the spirit world is empowering and comforting. You know, my grandmother spent eleven years alone after my grandfather died. Back then, I'm wondering how she even supported herself as I never heard of her working except for a brief stint selling something out of her home.
