I keep saying I am going to start painting again, but with my FT job, taking client, doing readings on the weekends, writing, teaching classes online & in person, planning my mentorship program, creating folk magic boxes and candles, taking care of my house and kids, plus everything else in between. I have not had time to just paint, so last night I screamed on the inside, grabbed my supplies, and just let my sould sing through the paintbrush. I have a similar connection with painting as I do dance. I let my body do all the work, and my mind just watches. One of the classes I am working on for June is The Night of The Witches. It's around the summer solstice, on the eve of Saint John where we make La Agua Di San Giovanni. It is also the night that La Signora Del Gioco "The Lady of The Game" comes, takes us out of our bodies so we can fly to the Walnut Tree of Benevento and learn the ways of Le Streghe/Le Janare, The Witches. A very well known iron talisman are horse shoes, a tradition that dates over a millennia in several cultures, and is cited in the legend of St. Dunstan and his encounter with the Christian devil. Mariners have been known to nail horseshoes to ship masts with seven iron nails for protection. Surrounding cemeteries with iron fencing was said to contain the souls of the dead. Burying iron objects, sometimes knives, under the entrance to one’s home was said to keep witches out. Witch bottles like those found in early America and pow wow magic often contain iron nails for the same purpose. 🛤️Famously, crossroads are places where energy is palpable, and that is just as true at train crossings. As an animist and someone who uses locally found items as much as possible in my practice, railroad spikes are an obvious choice when casting protective wards. Where I live, trains are very much part of the local identity and landscape. I have many memories as a teenager walking the tracks, collecting these discarded spikes as I went. They remind me of those carefree times, and it makes me happy to use them in my practice because of that. **A word of caution. Depending on where you are it may be illegal to gather railroad spikes. Where I live, there is no third rail and no risk of electrocution, please be sure to avoid tracks with a third rail. ~ Bratog Bríde ~ I've just gone out to retrieve the family Bratog Bríde- or simply, 'The brat'. Lol. In old Irish folk ways (and sometimes Manx and North West of England) it was custom to hang a piece of cloth out on Bride's eve (Jan 30th) so that it could be blessed by the Goddess/Saint as she travelled around waking up the land. I was brought up being told that for those who leave a cloth out for Brigid to wipe her brow on while she is out travelling will be blessed. And that the cloth can then be used in healings for a year- providing you don't wash the brat! If you wash the brat, you wash away the healing and blessings. If you need to wash the cloth, it should be done the day before Bride's eve- ready for the Bride blessing the next day. Throughout the year, the cloth can be used to ease headaches and fevers. Or folded and placed beneath the pillow of a sick child to aid in their healing. Traditionally, bratogs were likely very plain pieces of cloth, but over the years they have become much more decorated, with bespoke designs for the goddess- designed to be used annually. Day three of The British Craft House challenge is favourite make of 2023 🖤 As I said in my previous post, this is a tie between my lost wax face ring and this beauty. A talisman of me holding my son. Made during late pregnancy to encourage a safe birth and wellness in my baby and I 🖤 I brought historical references into the design by looking at Pilgrim Pussy badges from Medieval times. It’s made of copper & silver with a bezel set marquise garnet and a little eye cut out on the back of the gemstone, plus some delicious tool marks. I wore it everyday in the 3 weeks prior to his birth, during labour and when he was born, and I have barely taken it off since 🖤👑 Do you have a special piece of jewellery you never take off? We release you to fire and air! As we offer to you and the flames our wishes for the coming calendar year, may your smoke carry our wishes on the wind, to the Gods, Ancestors, and spirit allies. Although we surrender you to the flames of the cauldron, know that this is not the end. Your ashes will be sacredly stirred into the compost. So that one day, a new seed will be placed within you. And you shall grow again. Blessed Be!" So goes our little annual ritual of burning the Yule tree! Sacrificing our tree to symbolise the end of one Calendar year and the start of the new! As a family, we like to do this at some point between NYE and the Epiphany. We each write a wish for the new Calendar year, or something we would like to surrender and cast it into the flames. A small family ritual filled with acts of sympathetic magic, all ending in songs, laughter, mulled wine for the grown ups, and hot chocolate and Smores for the kids. Lots of people ask me at markets, “are these voodoo dolls?” They’re not, but they utilize similar techniques involving sympathetic magick. Sympathetic Magick is when you use an archetype to represent something in order to manifest or carry out an intention. Two categories of Sympathetic Magick include using items representative of certain things in order to obtain that outcome (like, when burning Rosemary for cleansing) & using archetypes as a means for representing someone/oneself (like, poppets). This ritual employs both methods in order to deeply connect with archetypes & natural elements for performing Shadow Work or Manifestation of the Self. It can aid in self-inflection, bringing one’s best self forward, & self-deification. Self-deification is when one connects with a deity or an archetype in order to exalt oneself to worship. This can be used in the journey to self-love & acceptance, helping one to overcome trauma & pre-conditioning for healing. It also helps one to open up to love & compassion & acceptance for others, in order to establish healthy boundaries & relationships. By placing yourself at the center of the altar of your life, you are ultimately giving yourself the power you worship deities for. You are your own deity because you have the power of self-awareness, compassion, & open mindedness, so that you can make anything happen in your life. It’s no longer about “if” something will happen, but “when” as you begin manifesting these things with the help of the natural elements &/your ancestors.
