Mother's Day is .... complicated. At least for most women I know. . We have to show gratitude & grace at the attention bestowed upon us by the people we interact with all day. From strangers at the gas station wishing us a happy mothers day, to acknowledging our family & friends' declarations of generosity. . And it's not that the actions are not kind or thoughtful. . However.... . SO many of us are struggling on mothers day, the same as any other day, that often I find it can be an extra burden to be "on display." To appear grateful & appreciative despite the fact that I have less body autonomy as a woman today than I was born with in the 80's. . I watch my friends with mothers who have passed on, graciously accept Mothers day greetings while simultaneously grieving the loss of their matriarch. Because no one wants to hear "my mom is dead". That's a downer right? . I see my friends who have lost a child or have never had the opportunity to have raised one, say "thank you" to strangers offering the customary greeting. All while their heart breaks at the reminder over and over again. . Single mom's who will receive nothing. . Trying to pick out a card that is kind but also genuine, as a LOT of people have strained (and hopefully healing) relationships with their mother figures. . Most of us feel like a failure as a mothers, daughters, & women in general; due to societal & internal pressures, that daily threatens to crush us under the weight of unrealistic expectations. . Yet we have to smile and say "you're so kind" as people validate our worth, knowing full well the carrot will be replaced with the stick the following 364 days . . Sometimes, it feels like Mother's Day is just a day to validate everybody else, in relation to their relationship with us. . Do I think it's maliciously intended? Absolutely not. Do I think it's another distraction to excuse away how we treat women the majority of the year...yes. . It's hard to celebrate female accomplishments & privilege, when we see our sisters fighting in the trenches for basic human rights. There is a concept described in the book ‘Twelve Wild Swans’ named ‘letting the doll do the work’, mentioned on page 206 in reference to the doll that sorts seeds for Vaselisa in the fairy tale of the same name. This phrase refers to the idea of doing something with your hands while you think and meditate, and once done with the task, it seems almost as if someone else, perhaps a doll, has done the physical work for you. The next sections of the book go on to talk about the value of silence, and while I am working on a literal doll in silence, the works I have done the most lately that fall under the concept of ‘letting the doll do the work’, at least to my mind, hasn’t been in silence, I admit. I have been listening to audiobooks often while I made the kimchi ramps, pickled dandelion capers, the pickled ramp bulbs, the dandelion cordage, and the pickled radishes. But these repetitive tasks have been a chance for me to hear stories and meditate on them, as well as my own thoughts and goings on in my life. While not all of these tasks have turned out well (the capers taste like mealy dandelions soaked in vinegar- which, to be fair, they are, and the pickled radishes ended up spoiling) I still am glad I took the time to work them through from beginning to end. Sometimes the magic is in the process, and it was good to remind myself of that. Today I’m sharing a fun little project I did this week after reading about it from the scrumptious @themedicinecircle: Redbud Capers! I’ve been wanting to try making my own “capers” for a while after seeing so many great ideas from foragers- like recently I saw unopened Dandelion buds being turned into capers. But Redbud… Redbud stopped me in my tracks. I mean they’re already so tart and so pink! In the past I’ve added Redbud blooms to salads, desserts, and they’re even in my Peace & Love Smokes. But pickling them was a real treat. And it’s so simple. Pick unopened Redbud blooms. Pull the little stem off if you’re feeling fussy like me. Next add equal parts apple cider vinegar and water to a small pot and bring to a slight simmer. Remove from heat and stir in the salt to dissolve. Then pour the liquid over your capers in a jar. Give it a shake every so often and keep in a cool, dark place for a couple days. I picked about 3 tablespoons of Redbud buds and used 1/4 cup vinegar, 1/4 cup water, and 1/2 tbsp salt. I also added a pinch of my Sun & Shade spice blend (which will be back for Litha). They are so tart and delicious and really give that pop to dishes! Made some violet jelly yesterday. I gathered the violets myself from my land and did all the work. It was so neat watching the blue turn purple when I added the lemon juice. I then used my olive wood spoon, which I only use for #kitchenwitchery, and put my intention into the mixture. "May whoever consumes this Jelly be blessed with Creativity, Good Luck, and Peace. Today makes one month since we decided to give up eating meat. I'm still stunned Erick decided to do this, since he's not a fan of veggies in general, but so far, so good! I think it's too soon to say exactly what the change in our grocery bill has been or will be. There's been a fair amount of experimenting and trying things that will not make it into a regular rotation. And still many new things to try, too. Since a big part of the reason for our decision was ethical, we decided not only to stop buying meat but to start buying free-range/organic/grass fed eggs and dairy products whenever possible, which obviously are more expensive. The overall savings on our food budget may not be significant in the end, but it's worth it for us. Health-wise, I've lost about 2.5 lbs without any particular effort, which has been nice. We still have a long way to go on eating a truly healthy diet, but we're getting there! I also feel the food I've prepared has had a more positive, lighter energy. Overall, it's been a great first month and neither of us have any regrets. How to Make Ghee Ingredients 1 pound organic, grass-fed butter Instructions Preheat oven to 250°F. Add butter to an oven safe dish or cast iron pan. Place dish in the oven. Cook for one hour. Remove pan from oven. The butter should be separated into three layers: a milk layer on the top, a golden ghee layer in the center, and some milk solids stuck to the bottom. Allow to cool for 20-30 minutes, allowing the top layer to harden. Pour everything through a fine mesh strainer or cheese cloth into a container with a spout (a glass measuring cup works best), separating out most of the milk solids. Skim any milk solids off of the top and wipe the spout clean. You may have some fine milk solids sink to the bottom. Pour the ghee into a pint sized mason jar, ensuring that no milk solids go with.
