Celebrating the May 6th Đurđevdan (St. George's Day), this year being auspiciously positioned as the day following Easter on the Orthodox calendar. The fresh herbs necessary for the St. George charms I've been birthing and tending through were gathered either during Easter or at dawn on the feast proper, during which I also cooked the belmuž (sheep's cheese porridge) and baked the kravaj (a special fertility bread shaped like the wreaths that would crown the sheep or goat sacrificed to St. George, or alternatively would crown the bucket that the first milking of the day would go into). The cores of each charm, which are currently resting in shell of the first red egg of Easter, are wrapped tight in white horse's hair and bathed in blood, sheep's milk, wine, honey, and fumigated in a special St. George incense I picked up in a monastery in Greece. The time is upon us where the thin veil of Autumn has arrived and the energy is strong. This is a time where we may feel more inclined to celebrate and embrace Spirit. Especially those of our ancestors and loved ones. Communing with them, calling them forth and feeling their closeness. I thought I would share a peek into my personal work with my ancestors and loved ones and how I honor their lives and lineage as we prepare for the arrival of Samhain. Some of the ways I like to honor them is by holding a sacred space for them. I place their photos within the space, write prayers and sing their favorite songs. I always make sure to have fresh water and often share my personal bakes with them. The Autumn season is a time I really like to focus on gratitude and connection to Spirit. There is abundance all around and I have been feeling that overwhelming sense of gratitude specifically for my home. This time last year we were under contract to purchase a home. If I’m being honest it was really a home I pictured myself in but was so desperate to get out of the living situation we were in we exhausted all options. That house purchase fell through and the debilitating shroud that covered me put me in a really dark place mentally. I felt stuck. I felt defeated. I look around today at this home and I feel nothing but peace. I no longer feel that immovable force of energy blanketing me in darkness. I can see light. Cultivating relationships with plant spirits 🍃 This was something one of your local tricksters, Robin (he/they), had special difficulty with at first. They tried learning associations from books, but it felt hollow. Even the most potent herbs of witchcraft felt strangely empty when he got them from local witch shops. It wasn’t until your other local trickster, Loki (he/him), taught them about the life of plants that a genuine connection started to form. Robin had only met many of the herbs of witchcraft in their commercial form: dried, ground or chopped, and completely unrecognizable from their original form. Loki taught Robin to begin with the living plant rather than a book. The lessons a plant can teach are in the lessons it learns in its life. What conditions does it thrive in, and what ones stunt its growth? How does it ensure its survival? What habitat does it prefer and why? We bring this philosophy to every work we make; it’s the foundation of both Loki and Robin’s relationship with plant spirits now. The photos above are of a maple tree we came across. It had recently lost a large branch and offered the leaves, seeds, and flowers on it to incorporate into our work. It was the first time Robin had seen the flowers of the Maple and how seeds sprout from them. There’s a special magic in witnessing how a plant grows and we’re so grateful to the Maple for its generosity. If you’re having any trouble connecting with plant spirits, try learning about how they grow. If you’re able, find them in the wild to witness that growth, even if you can’t grow them yourself. While searching duchas.ie for folklore surrounding black cats, I came across quite a few troublesome results. In general, black cats have gotten a bad rap throughout modern history, what with the church associating them with witches and/or The Devil ™️. Here are some of my favorite (non-violent) piseóga about these brilliant creatures: • Anyone who sees the black cat at The Well of the Black Cat on Samhain Eve will get what they wish for. • If a black cat crosses your path, it is unlucky, but if you catch the black cat and pull three nibs of his hair and put them through a piece of red flannel, it will remove the bad luck. • To meet a black cat first thing in the morning is good luck, but last thing in the night, unlucky. • To see a black cat when going to a fair or market is lucky. • If you had a black cat and you were going to change your house, you should bring the cat to the new house with you or else you would have bad luck. • A black cat running across a road is a sign of an accident. • It was said that “If a black cat to you should stray, butter his feet and make him stay!” because it is a sign of luck to have a stray black cat enter your home. • When receiving a cure from renowned bean-feasa Biddy Early, it was good luck to be greeted by her black cat, but bad luck to be greeted by her brown cat. • Emblems of the black cat are worn to bring good luck to the wearer. We all talk about slow living. In addition to this we should also talk about slow witchcraft. Being a witch (or occult practitioner of any kind) isn't about constantly performing great rituals. It's an attitude to life starting with the small things. Go for a walk in the forest. Experience the change of seasons. Light a candle for your familiar. Create an incense blend - Burn this incense blend. Plant that seed. Harvest these herbs. Prepare your own tea. Create all these small moments through out the day to strengthen the connection to the Craft. We are living in a busy world with busy days and weeks full of busy jobs. Everything is happening too fast anyway. Slow it down. Your Craft isn't meant to add even more preasure and stress to yourself. It's not about achievement but about constant connection through little acts of devotion and growth over time at your own pace. I literally get an allergic reaction when I see people judging other practitioners based on the pace of their practice - especially in social media context. And there's another point: Many people seem to forget that social media only ever offers a glimpse into someone's life. For many reasons, I personally do not share every single ritual act here and never will and I'm pretty sure that most practitioners are like me. In folklore these torches were used to protect against ill will, malefic and sorcery. A Witch’s Ancestral Prayer 🕯️ With Samhain approaching, I am nurturing my ancestor altar daily and communing with those who came before me. In light of recent events with the health of my mother, I have discovered more regarding my own personal lineage. A fitting time to I suppose. My mother was adopted and I never really asked her questions about it until recently after noticing quite a change on my ancestry DNA. While I don’t put too much weight into those tests, it did bring up curious thoughts regarding her side of the family. As I dove deeper into photos and records I began to feel a sense of fear. My practice as an American Irish pagan has always been a huge part, if not the forefront of my daily craft. This fear I felt after discovering more stirred something within me and got me thinking about how closed off I’ve truly been in my practice. I am working on being more open to the other parts of me and my lineage that are feeling so ever present and for someone who isn’t too fond of change, naturally I feel a little nervous and scared. Stregheria e Santità Utilizzando il termine "Stregheria" si intende la pratica magica rurale sviluppatosi con la diffusione del Cattolicesimo (o Pietà) Popolare, avente origine dal Paganesimo Medievale della Stregoneria. Se dall'anno 1000 al 1300 troviamo Operatori Magici apertamente "pagani" che si rivolgevano alle Fate, dal 1400 taluni da streghe e stregoni divennero noti come Guaritori Popolari venendo pure santificati per le loro capacità. Nella Pietà Popolare troviamo una lunga storia del rapporto tra le donne e la medicina. Testimonianze raccontano di sapienti levatrici e mediche, guaritrici medievali che popolano la documentazione medica antica le cui azioni erano spesso associate alla pratica di Stregoneria. A salvare dalla loro condanna alcune di queste che mettevano in atto terapie tra medicina e superstizione fu tuttavia la loro conclamata Santità. Nei processi di canonizzazione di Francesca Romana, testimoni riferiscono dettagli che permettono di scoprire i rimedi più utilizzati dalla Santa: succhi di ruta, panni unti di olio, pietre calde e impasti. Alcune, come Caterina da Racconigi, usavano rimedi più particolari; tra i suoi ingredienti usuali c'erano occhi e lingue di rospo, veniva chiamata "Masca di Dio" per la capacità di volare (in spirito) e predire in questo modo la morte delle persone. Altre, che invece non vennero santificate, trovarono riparo dalle accuse di illecito esercizio della professione medica nella comunità ecclesiastica, potendo continuare in questo modo la loro opera di assistere e curare gli ammalati. Ritual bath salts & their uses 🧂 Salt purifies & protects but can be worked with in many more ways. Tell salt what you would ask of it & it will take to most tasks readily. This can be amplified by supporting materia magica like herbs and oils. We gently bake our ritual salts to lock the oils in, reduce clumping, and enliven them with heat. This is how we craft the ritual bath salts that will be coming to our shop shortly in our Dionysos Lysios & the Orchid collection. Ritual bath salts can of course be added to baths, but also worked with in many more ways. Salts are an easy and portable way to make holy, consecrated, and/or ritual waters wherever you are. You can use moon, river, lake, or even tap water to add your salt to. Pray over them to wake the water: to the materia magica involved and spirits/deities you’d like to call in. Add additional herbs or flowers, as seen above, for added potency. With your water made, its uses are endless! Wipe down or wash items in it to cleanse or consecrate them (as long as they won’t be harmed by salt or water). Wash your face or hands for ritual purposes. Use the water as a door/window/floor wash. Dip a leafy branch in and asperge your space. I want to take a moment to talk about Elders and respect. I was raised to always treat your elders with respect, no matter what. That being said, there is a difference in respect and obedience. In my culture's, elders are always strong-willed, wise, opinionated, and always have something to say about what you're doing. In today's day and age, a lot of people look at this as a bad thing, as if the elders are overstepping their boundaries! In all actuality, is it, though? When we take a step back and look closer, are these elders acting like know it alls? Maybe a little, or are they watching out for us, the generation who comes next! I've been really thinking about this due to an incident that happened the other day in our IG community here. I commented on an elders post about something I have been studying for a while. Now this elder is someone I have deeply looked up to for quite some time, and when I commented on her post it was simply to say I founding interesting that I feel the ancestors have been calling to me for awhile about something and this was the 3rd sign that day. This elder does not know me personally at all, so she has no way of knowing what I have or have not studied, and that is not her fault especially if I have kept a lot quiet about my practice and am realizing that now. This elders comment to me focused on telling me not to do what I felt I was being called to do, as well as telling me to study more. After that, someone else said to me, privately, how they felt what was said to me was rude and judgmental, and I'm not going to lie at first. I also felt that way! But then I started to really think about it. I thought about our culture and society, and how our elders like her are trying to make sure things are kept sacred and that if she does not know how dedicated I am to these practices then of course she is going to say, "no don't do this" in the nicest way. The point of what I'm saying is that our elders will always know how to shake you to the core and know you down a peg, but is it really a bad thing when it makes you stop and think. This situation made me stop and think, am I ready to do said thing, maybe it's not even about skill,⬇️
