Happy May-Eve, Old Style! 🌸 Take precautions against calendar- conservative fairies; a second chance to try Beltane divinations. 🌸 Though rowan is the universally favored protective plant throughout Celtic lands, in parts of Wales vervain was preferred, and May-eve was called Cynnull y Ferfaen ('Gather the Vervain'). 🌸 Women who wish to dream of their future husbands should 'go after sunset on May Eve, to a bank on which the yarrow grows plentifully, and gather therefrom nine sprigs of the plant, repeating: "Good morrow, good morrow fair yarrow And thrice good morrow to thee Come tell me before tomorrow Who my true love shall be." The yarrow is brought home, put into the right foot stocking, placed under the pillow, and the mystic dream is confidently expected. But if the girl speaks after she has pulled the yarrow, the charm is broken.' (Sir William Wilde, Irish Popular Superstitions, 1852) 🌸 New Style & Old Style dates are the result of an emendation to the calendar of Julius Caesar, which had been followed by Europeans from 45 BC. Changes were made by astronomers in the late 16th century on the orders of Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 and adopted in Catholic Europe shortly afterwards; these changes only reached Britain in 1752, when 11 days in September were ordered to be omitted. 🌸 Yup, my account is all over the place these days, and that's just how it's going to be 💕 . #may #beltane #folklore #medievalart #celticlore #celtic #middleages

✧ On this day in 1191, Berengaria of Navarre, the eldest daughter of Sancho VI of Navarre and Sancha of Castile, married Richard I of England, also known as Richard the Lionheart. They were married on 12 May 1191 in the Chapel of St. George at Limassol on Cyprus and Berengaria was crowned queen the same day by the archbishop of Bordeaux and the bishops of Évreux and Bayonne. Richard had Berengaria brought to him by his aging mother Eleanor of Aquitaine. Because Richard was already on the Third Crusade, having wasted no time in setting off after his coronation, the two women had a long and difficult journey to catch up with him. They arrived at Messina in Sicily in 1191 during Lent (when the marriage could not take place) and were joined by Richard’s sister Joan, the widowed queen of Sicily. Berengaria was left in Joan’s custody.[4] En route to the Holy Land, the ship carrying Berengaria and Joan ran aground off the coast of Cyprus, and they were threatened by the island’s ruler, Isaac Comnenus. Richard came to their rescue, captured the island, and overthrew Comnenus. 📷: Berengaria’s Alarm for the Safety of her Husband, Richard Coeur de Lion by Charles Allston Collins, 1850.

Lovely afternoon @berrycrofthub, a refresher course (for me) in medieval #distaff spinning. I brought my own distaves since I want especially to become more confident for spinning with this type of distaff on heritage sites. That said, I 'cheated' a bit by using a French-style spindle -- but I promise I do know how to spin with a straight/smooth shaft hand-spindle, too! I chose to use my French spindle because I can use it with ease, and I wanted to be able to focus on the distaff rather than worrying about the spindle and that. @granny.jane @andrzejnaczynskiwoodturner #handspinning #handspindle #medievalhistory #textiles #livinghistory #crafts #wool #fibres #middleages #Romanhistory #women #womenswork #womenshistory

The Kievan Rus and the Eastern Roman Empire continued a series of smaller conflicts which eventually came to a stop with the Rus-Roman Treaty of 907-911 under Leo VI. This treaty gave more freedom to Rus merchants across the empire. However it was not till Basil II, that these fierce warriors became a distinct and separate unit of the Imperial Bodyguards. This treaty was a result of the expedition led by the Rus prince Oleg. Basil II was 20 when he came to power and reigned for about 50 years. However, his reign would not be smooth sailing with the fear of rebellion always around the corner. Early into his reign, Basil II, faced open rebellion from Bardas Skleros and Bardas Phokas, both of which were members of an elite and wealthy background from Anatolia. Basil had managed during this conflicts to organise a major treaty with Prince Vladimir I of Kiev. The latter had occupied an important port in the Crimea but offered to give it back if Basil gave his sister, Anna, to marry Vladimir. In return it was said that Vladimir offered to convert to Christianity and provide 6,000 troops to Basil II. It has been argued the troops were undisciplined, drunken, violent men who Vladimir was happy to rid himself of, but they proved to be devastating in battle for the Eastern Empire. These troops titled the Varangians of the City gradually superseded the Exkoubitores of the Hetaireia as the bodyguards to the emperor. This proved a worthwhile for both sides, with the Varangians having their pay increased, and the Emperors of the Eastern Roman Empire had new devastating bodyguards. #romeisthelight #ancientrome #rome #history #ancienthistory #romanhistory #archaeology #romanempire #spqr #ancient #ukraine #ancientworld #ancientweapons #byzantium #middleages #russia #sweden #eternalcity #italygram #forum #varangian #varangianguard #venice #stmarksbasilica #constantinople

@mat.besancon @ericdechassey @goerighergott @juliette.trey @villededijon @villebesancon #albrechtdürer #martinschongauer #unterlindenmuseum #unterlinden #moyenage #mittelalter #middleages #peinturesgermaniques2024 @peinturesgermaniques #germanpainter #lucascranach #germanpainting #exhibition #besancon @besanconjaimemaville @besancontourisme @besancon.villedartetdhistoire #Renaissance #rinascimento @fondation_bemberg @museelouvre

O AMOR DEUS - Ensemble RESONEZ Abtei de St. Maurice (VS) 26. HERBULATUM - 1440 Herb scented ricotta tourte I’m going to get medieval on you today. The Middle Ages was the heyday of pie. There was an absolute craze for popping all sorts of combinations into single and double crusts. And thank goodness for that! Who doesn’t love pie? This recipe comes from Johannes de Bockenheim, a cleric who pope Martin V had appointed as head cook to the Holy See in 1417. This recipe comes from the cookbook he wrote when he retired, but is a perennial favorite that would be reinterpreted by chefs for centuries to come. This version celebrates the profusion of flavors that were much appreciated in the Middle Ages - herbs, dried fruit, spices, nuts, cheese and a bit of sweetening - all in the same glorious dish. [crust] 250g flour 1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp sugar 150g butter 1 egg + 1 yolk Prepare dough. Chill 1/2 hour. Prepare the 18cm baking tin as in the video. FILLING 4 eggs 400g ricotta (preferably sheep’s milk) 1/2 tsp salt 30g raisins, soaked to soften 1/2 tsp each ginger & cinnamon 1/4 tsp nutmeg [chopped herbs - 25g total)] 3 tbsp parsley 1 tbsp thyme 1 tsp marjoram 2 tbsp melted butter [finish] 1 tsp butter, 50g pine nuts, 1 tsp sugar. Caramelized in pan. Blind bake the crust on 185°C, 20 min. Remove pie weights. Bake another 20 until dry. Mix the filling ingredients. Fill the pie. Bake on 180°C 40 min. Add the topping. #historicalitalianfood #pie #pielover #tourte #middleages #medieval #medievale #foodhistory #foodphotography #culinary #culinaryarts #gastronomy #gastronomia #cookbook #cookbooks #ricotta #ricottacake #italianrecipes #italianrecipe #retro #historylovers

The construction of Bamberg Cathedral began in 1002 on behalf of King Henry II. (973-1024), since 1012 Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and was consecrated on 6th May 1012. The first finished parts were the two crypts. The first cathedral was a  cruciform basilica with a main choir in the west, a second one in the east and two towers in the east. The nave had a wooden ceiling. 1047 the body of Pope Clement II.(1005-1045), former Bishop of Bamberg, was buried here 1047. This cathedral was burned down two times 1081 and 1285, but was each time rebuilt soon. The current late romanesque church with its four 81m high towers, 94 m long and 26m broad, was erected by three bishops of the House of Andechs-Merania (Otto, bishop from 1177-1196, Ekbert from 1203-1237 and Poppo from 1237-1242). The choir in the east is romanesque, the one in the west gothic. The cathedral houses several masterpieces of art: The „ Bamberger Reiter“, an early 13th century equestrian statue of sandstone by an unknown master, the tomb for Emperor Henry II. and Empress Kunigunde, made in 14 years from limestone and marble by artist Tilman Riemenschneider  (1460-1531) and the Nativity Altar, made of basswood by Veit Stoss 1520-1523.
