You wish. We deliver! A small but nice insight into the interior of the Ybbsitz parish church from the end of the Middle Ages. The detail we are showing you comes from the gallery in the west of the nave and shows its vault. And this presents itself as a particularly beautiful interplay of loop ribs, floral motifs and mouldings that are carried over from the windows into the vaults. Most of Southwell Minster is a wonderfully chunky Romanesque, dating from the early 12th C. But it’s got some great Gothic elements, too — the 13th C chapter house, for example, is an amazingly delicate piece of work (and I’ll do a set of posts about it one of these days). For now, though, let’s focus on the early 14th C (1320-1340) pulpitum (choir screen) that you can see at the end of the nave in the first slide. Swipe for an overview of the nave side, and stay tuned for the next two posts — tomorrow we’ll explore the screen in detail, and the next day we will take a look at the 13th C chancel/choir on the other side. @southwellminster #southwellminster #englishchurches #gothicarchitecture #gothicchurch #romanesquearchitecture #romanesquechurch #normanarchitecture #12thcenturyarchitecture #medievalarchitecture #churcharchitecture #historicarchitecture #discovercathedrals #britisharchitecture #greatbritisharchitecture #greatchurches .

King Richard went to Gloucester Cathedral yesterday. The cloisters at Gloucester are the earliest surviving fan vaults in England, having been designed between 1351 and 1377 by Thomas de Cantebrugge. The cathedral itself suggests that they form "the first and best example of fan vaulting in the world". The cloisters stand to the north of the cathedral and, along with the cathedral precincts to the north and east, contain a number of listed buildings. Richard was in Gloucester, whose Duke he was since 1461, on 29 July 1483 during his royal progress. He granted Gloucester its charter, pictured on the last two slides, featuring an elaborate initial R in 'Ricardus' as well as his personal coat of arms with two white boar supporters. In 1471 Gloucester had closed its gates to Margaret of Anjou’s Lancastrian army, forcing her to move on up the Severn to Tewkesbury, where Edward IV was victorious in the following battle. In 1483 the rebels against Richard led by the Duke of Buckingham were stopped at Gloucester because the River Severn flooded and made passage impossible. Nothing is recorded as to whether Richard visited the cathedral, however it's almost certain that he did given the cathedral's importance, grandeur, and royal connection (King Edward II is buried there; Richard's great-great-great-grandfather). #RichardIII #KingRichardIII #Gloucester #GloucesterCathedral #Cathedral #church #gothicchurch #gothiccathedral #fanvaulting #gothicarchitecture #medieval #medievalchurch #middleages #15thcentury #edwardii #englishgothic #dukeofgloucester #king #kingofengland #England #medievalengland

Happy #WindowWednesday! ⚜️🎉 Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland. Founded in 1191, it was initially established as a Roman Catholic cathedral. Its history is intertwined with the ecclesiastical and political dynamics of medieval Ireland. Architecturally, the cathedral exemplifies Early #EnglishGothic style and was primarily constructed between 1191 and 1270. Throughout the medieval period, the #cathedral played a pivotal role in Dublin’s religious and social life. It served as a center of worship, education, and governance, forming a vibrant hub within the city. However, it also faced challenges such as floods, fires, and neglect, leading to periods of decline and restoration. The English #Reformation in the 16th century brought significant changes to the cathedral as it transitioned from #RomanCatholic to #Anglican affiliation. #Iconoclasm, suppression, and reorganization reshaped the interior and functions during this turbulent period. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it underwent further renovations and adaptations to accommodate changing needs and architectural trends. The addition of a #spire, repairs to damaged sections, and alterations to the interior reflected both practical concerns and evolving aesthetics. The 19th century brought renewed focus on preserving and restoring the cathedral. Major restoration efforts, notably funded by Benjamin Guinness, aimed to safeguard its structural integrity and enhance its aesthetic appeal. However, these endeavors also raised questions about authenticity as #Victorian influences became prominent in the cathedral’s appearance. Saint Patrick’s remains part of the Church of Ireland, and has solidified its status as a national treasure and cultural landmark. It hosts national ceremonies, cultural events, and tourist attractions, symbolizing Dublin’s enduring legacy, faith, and architectural achievement. © 2023 Wolf Jacobs #gothique #gothiccathedral #gothicchurch #medieval #gothicarchitecture #churchmypassion #churchesofinstagram #immortalgothic #immortal_gothic #gthcrchtctr #frenchgothicarchitecture #architecture #architecturegothique #ireland #SaintPatrick #StPatrick #Dublin

people come and go, music stays. . songs you’ve sent each other, songs you’ve listened to on long drives, songs you’ve smoked and danced to in the kitchen. “there are so many songs you won’t be able to listen to after”, he joked once, but turns out the joke was on him, cause i guess i like a little ache in my music. that playlist is a time capsule with layers of long-distance closeness we’ve built tied to every song, but as i continued listening to it, i’ve been slowly making it my own. making new memories, adding new feeling, walking on with music in my headphones… . ‘I regret that you two met’, a friend says. ‘I don’t’, I shrug. ‘It was an experience, and it was worth what it took from me. I only regret the fact and the way that it ended.’ . but even as i’m saying this, i know for sure - this was the last story of its kind. i’ve tried it, and now it’s finally time to admit - romance just isn’t for me. it’s a nice idea, a rosy dream, a great selling point, but in reality, it just sucks. . . . #city #barcelona #barcelonacity #citystreets #square #citysquare #church #gothicquarter #gothicchurch #streetsofbarcelona #barrigotic #fleamarket #barri #gotic #catalonia #catalunya #españa #spain #spain🇪🇸 #españa🇪🇸 #spanishsolution #wanderlust #travelphotography #traveling #artisanmarket #spring #springvibes

(Swipe>>) The “reverse west facade” featured in the nave (see previous two posts) continues into the two side aisles, each of which features a portal with stained glass above and an array of sculpture niches around it. Slides 1-5 show the south side aisle, and 6-7 show the north. The stained glass here dates from 1938 (I think, though they are certainly 20th C), and the centers of the quatrefoils each feature a “tree of life”-type theme with a mother animal and her children (birds in the south and lambs(?) in the north): this of course makes for a good allegory of Mary, Our Theotokos, to whom the cathedral is dedicated. #cathedraledereims #reimscathedral #frenchcathedral #gothiccathedral #gothicchurch #gothicarchitecture #medievalchurch #medievalarchitecture #13thcenturyarchitecture #churcharchitecture #historicchurch #historicarchitecture #catholicchurch #catholiccathedral #modernstainedglass #stainedglass #stainedglassart #architecturaldetails .

(Swipe>>) Yesterday’s west rose window was pretty darn impressive, but guess what? Reims Cathedral boasts two west rose windows (slide 2) and the upper one, featured today, has three times the area (and is therefore three times as good, lol). This 13th C window (with many restorations over the centuries) features a Dormition of the Virgin in the center, surrounded by the apostles in the next ring, then angels, and finally OT kings and prophets in the outer ring. Between the two rose windows is a triforium arcade of stained glass (slides 3-4). The nine panels of stained glass here shows various kings of France, echoing the sculpted kings on the exterior west facade (I’ll do a series on it in the future) and reflecting the fact that Reims Cathedral was the site of coronations for French kings for many centuries. #cathedraledereims #reimscathedral #frenchcathedral #gothiccathedral #gothicchurch #gothicart #gothicarchitecture #medievalchurch #medievalarchitecture #13thcenturyarchitecture #13thcenturyart #churcharchitecture #historicchurch #historicarchitecture #catholicchurch #catholiccathedral #medievalart #medievalstainedglass #stainedglass #stainedglassart #rosewindow #sacredgeometry .

The Church of Our Lady before Týn, Staré Město (Old Town) Prague, Czech Republic. This striking Gothic church lurks menacingly behind the pastel buildings of Staré Město, the old town square of Prague. Begun in the fourteenth century, it was all but completed by the 1450s, however the southern tower was not constructed until 1511, which may explain why it is of different dimensions to its twin. Týn is also the setting of a famous ghost story. Legend has it that a rich lady lived in a house just in front of the church. She was a very harsh mistress and could never keep serving maids for very long. One day a very devout young girl came to work for her, and for many years the lady was pleased with her. However, the girl would pray at Týn every day, and this was to be her undoing. One day, the lady commanded that the girl miss her prayers in order to prepare for an important dinner the lady was hosting. The girl refused, and the enraged lady strangled her to death. It was said that the ghost of the murdered girl tormented the lady until she repented and became a nun. Now the lady’s ghost is said to be condemned for all eternity to ring the bells at Týn, calling the faithful to prayer. #Týn #prague #europeancitybreak #europeancity #cityofghosts #ghoststory #gothic #gothicarchitechture #gothicchurch #ghosttours #oldtownprague #hauntedchurches #churchghosts #medieval #photography #hauntedprague #thehauntedpalaceblog #thehauntedpalacewordpress #thehauntedmirrorbook #hauntedpalaceblog #hauntedpalacewordpress #hauntedmirrorbook #lenoraandmissjessel

(Swipe>>) Over the next three posts, we are going to take a close look at Reims Cathedral’s unique “reverse west facade” — the interior west wall. This post focuses on the lower portion of the nave, which naturally features a glorious rose window (slides 1-3). The original was destroyed in WWII, so this is a 1938 design which does a pretty good job (to my mind) of evoking medieval designs, with a Virgin & Child in the center and a Mother of Mercy up top. A sculpture of St Denis (I assume: it’s a dude holding his own head) stands in front of the rose at the bottom, and in the middle of the feature that makes this interior west wall so remarkable — a vast array of niches (slides 4-9) containing interconnected sculpture narratives, many of which relate back to the exterior west facade (I’ll do a series on it one of these days…). Some of these sculptures are original 13th C creations, though — similar to the rose here — damage in WWI led to a lot of reconstruction in the 20th C. This is all great stuff. But if you thought we were done here, you don’t know the grandeur of Reims’ west wall. We still need to look at the second, and much bigger, rose window above (visible in slide 10), as well as the side aisle facades. These will be the subjects of the next two posts. #cathedraledereims #reimscathedral #frenchcathedral #gothiccathedral #gothicchurch #gothicart #gothicarchitecture #medievalchurch #medievalarchitecture #medievalart #medievalstainedglass #stainedglass #stainedglassart #rosewindow #sacredgeometry #sacredart #13thcenturyarchitecture #13thcenturyart #churcharchitecture #historicchurch #historicarchitecture #catholicchurch #catholiccathedral .

“We were two instantly ignited prayer candles, him and I, and I would gladly burn beside him until the wick met glass, and we were nothing but forgotten smoke in an empty cathedral” Wow, I am still at a loss for words with this incredible work by Kat Blackthorne! Selah gothic is your next MUST READ! I hope you’re ready to confess because Father Amorth is ready to hear your sins... I so rarely am ever at a loss for words when it comes to books but I am not over it. The way Kat is able to intertwine themes like horror, suspense, mystery and romance while covering heavy and real world topics about toxic societal normals and the need for more self acceptance, love and deconstruction of harmful rhetoric is so incredible and an absolute talent. This story is living rent free in my head right now and I cannot wait to read everything this author has to offer (as well as BEG for more stories from this world! *cough* Amorth brothers!) THIS is Flamboyant Gothic!⚜️ The beautiful Church of Saint Wulfram (Collégiale Saint-Vulfran) is the main church of Abbeville, France. It’s a former collegiate church in #FlamboyantGothic style, whose nave was built between 1488 and 1539 and the choir between 1661 and 1663. Towards the end of the 15th century, the current collegiate church was built on the swampy floor of the Somme valley. The church bore the name of Saint Wulfram (Vulfran in French). In the 12th century, the Count of Ponthieu had transferred the relics of this saint to Abbeville. The new collegiate church replaced the parish church named after Wulfram at a time of economic boom, enabling the new artistic zest of Flamboyant Gothic, which is also reflected in this church. The collegiate church of Saint Wulfram was supposed to be the most beautiful church in Ponthieu. That’s why the count asked the King of France to co-finance the construction, together with the count of Ponthieu and the city of Abbeville. So that the faithful could continue to attend their worship services, the western part of it was started on June 7, 1488. The western facade was almost finished in 1502, after which the eastern part could be started. Until 1539, construction on the church was in full process. Then, however, the funds to continue building were lacking, so the work was discontinued. In the 17th century, members of a brotherhood were allowed to enlarge their chapel, but it was not until the end of the 17th century that the eastern part of the church was completed. The style of this now completed choir is charming and endearing, but extremely different in rather sober compared to the beautiful and dramatic Flamboyant Gothic façade. The Emmaus Church in Prague ⛪️ This Benedictine Abbey in Prague is very interesting because of its history, cultural significance and architecture. I am happy that in 2019 I had the opportunity to learn a lot about it as I was working on a booklet about the church. For its cover I painted this picture showing the main west facade of the church. If you want to learn more about its history: The monastery with its church (officially named the Abbey Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Sts Jerome, Cyril and Methodius, Adalbert and Procopius) was founded in the 14th century by Emperor Charles IV (who wanted to make Prague into the imperial capital of the Holy Roman Empire) as a centre of Slavic learning, to follow the tradition of Sts Cyril and Methodius. He invited Benedictine monks from Croatia who used Church Slavonic as their liturgical language. In the following centuries the monastery had a very complicated history with many interesting periods. In the 19th century the monks expelled from Beuron in Germany came there, bringing with them the unique Beuron school of art (which, by the way, has been a great source of inspiration for me). The saddest moment came in 1945 when it was bombed during a WWII Allied airstrike – most of the monastery burned down and the church towers and a great part of its vaults collapsed. After the war, the monks were expelled and imprisoned by the Communists, who confiscated the monastery. The modern concrete towers were built in the 1960s. While they are surely controversial, they have since become a well-known part of the Prague cityscape. At last, the monastery was also returned to the Benedictines in 1990 and they have been gradually restoring it to its original beauty. . . . #drawingarchitecture #gothicchurch #churchesoftheworld #colorpencildrawing #christianart #pragueart

Cologne Cathedral (Kölner dom) is a Gothic cathedral in the center of the German city of Cologne and is the largest cathedral in Germany. Starting in 1248, the cathedral and its distinctive towers were finally completed in 1880 in #NeoGothic style. Only the lowest part of the west tower is from the 13th century. In 1164, Archbishop Rainald van Dassel brought relics of the Holy Three Kings from Italy to Cologne. After this, the church was immediately one of the most important pilgrim churches in Europe. Because it was felt that these pilgrims should be able to come to a worthy church, it was decided in 1225 to replace the old cathedral with a new building in the then modern #FrenchGothic style. On August 15 1248, under the direction of master builder Gerhard von Rile, the construction of the new cathedral started. They started with the eastern part, modeled on #AmiensCathedral. However, at the end of the 15th century, construction stagnated due to reduced trade and a reduced number of pilgrims. Lack of money and lack of interest eventually led to a complete halt in 1528. Between 1744-1770, a #Baroque refurbishment took place. When revolutionary troops invaded #Cologne in 1794, during the French occupation, the archbishop fled and the building was damaged, even used as a stable for the French army. When the cathedral was reconsecrated as a church building, enthusiasm for the completion grew. In 1880 the towers were finally completed and with it the construction of the entire #cathedral, following the construction plans from the #MiddleAges. The cathedral suffered 14 hits by aerial bombs during WWII. It nevertheless remained standing in an otherwise completely flattened city. The twin spires were an easily recognizable navigational landmark for Allied aircraft bombing. © 2023 Wolf Jacobs #repost by: @gothicarchitectures #gothic #gothique #gothiccathedral #gothicchurch #medieval #gothicarchitecture #gothicart #gthcrchtctr #photography #churchmypassion #instachurch #churchesofinstagram #architecturegothique #gotiek #gotisch #immortalgothic #immortal_gothic #germany #CologneCathedral #kölnerdom #köln

(Swipe>>) Originally built in the first half of the 14th C, the interior here (see previous post for background info) saw a lot of accretions and revisions over the centuries. So in 1784 it was restored to a Gothic style, which makes it an early example of Gothic revivalism and gives it a remarkably “clean” and unified appearance. See that pyramid against the side aisle wall in the last slide? That’s a cenotaph by Antonio Canova. Església de Santa Maria de Cervera. Un dels edificis més importants del gòtic català, construïda entre els segles XIV i XV. En el seu interior hi ha la imatge de la Mare de Déu del Coll de les Savines, patrona de la ciutat.
