We found this unfinished wood parquetry at the flea market a couple weeks ago. Parquetry is a geometric mosaic of wood pieces used for decorative effect for furniture or flooring. This weeks #52weeksofhome theme is “woodwork” which is timely since we just finished restoring the stairs and railing! We added a salvaged newel post at the top in order to cut out a broken piece, replace a missing spindle, and give the whole thing a sturdy anchor. Previously the whole railing was wiggly but not anymore! This beautiful mahogany stair rail is back! Last few photos are before! This house from 1910 on Peabody Ave in Memphis has an Auction sign in front. It's over 4000 sf and has a carriage house in back perfect for granny flat, adult children that move back in or rental income. It looks rough but I'm hoping someone will buy it that appreciates it and rehabilitates it. Please no one that strips it or scrapes it. I don't know if they could do that in Central Gardens but maybe. We are maxed out with our Myrtle project but c'mon! In order to cut out the broken part of the railing and rejoin it, we bought a salvaged newel post from the amazing @thehistoricalbanyfoundation Parts Warehouse to allow space, but also act as a sturdy anchor for the railing. The railing previously died into the wall. Another job between jobs was to improve the lighting in the back garden. Now we have dimmable lights around the paving outside the kitchen along with discreet path lights so we don’t trip on our way from the garden to the greenhouse. We also installed up-lighters on the smokehouse (and as a result can confirm that hand digging a 100 foot cable trench is terrific exercise). It’s odd but the lights have transferred the smokehouse from a humble tool shed into something much more operatic. Lighting really does wonders. After a couple of cocktails the shed reminds us weirdly of one of the Achaemenid rock tombs in the cliffs above Fethiye - though the untidy beach plum to the left and the lack of any cliffs give the game away a bit!

Awhile ago I came across this delft teapot missing a lid. Despite missing this key piece, I thought it too sweet to leave behind and it’s sat on this shelf, holding its own. Recently I came across a video by @kenziemariehome and saw how she turned a chinoiserie ginger jar into a tissue dispenser. Now what a fabulous idea! I managed to cobble together a little last minute Mother’s Day brunch in my dining room. This space is currently a work in progress. The buffet lamps are lacking shades and the giant crane painting is only there until I can sell it. It’s not really my vibe, but I inherited it, so I figured I’d hang it up for now. I’m contemplating painting the ceiling black and adding a big white ceiling medallion around the chandelier. Everything in this house is always a work in progress, but progress is progress regardless. Thinking back to my favorite house. I affectionately call this “the one” because, well, just look at it! 😍⁣ ⁣ This home has a small section in the back that was built between 1820 and 1840 and it was added onto over the years. That gorgeous porch, which I adore so much, was added around 1900 along with that stone wall in the front.⁣ ⁣ The house belonged to a doctor and he ran his practice out of a small building next to the home in the 1880s. It still stands. ⁣ ⁣ It has remained in the same family since it was built! I need to drive out there again soon. The last I heard, they were doing some maintenance to keep her shining. Not your typical Charleston, South Carolina home right? This was built in 1933 by J. C. Long who was a state senator in the 1930s and was later a major real estate developer on the Isle of Palms.⁣ ⁣ The home has a bomb shelter with 18 inch thick cement walls that are floor to ceiling. This was added prior to WWII. 1986 - I came across photos of the interior of The Queen from 1986 when Cathy and Tom owned the house. Thankfully she made a photo album of their restoration process. It's priceless to me. * Photos 1-3: They purchased these 2 beautiful sideboards and a small barley twist table. I was lucky that these were left behind and the previous owner from the 1990s kept them as well. * You can see Cathy was way ahead of her time. She had painted the paneling black 🖤 In photo 3, the smaller sideboard was kept in the smaller dining room. Yes, there were 2 dining rooms, but it was later converted into a small bedroom. You can see the plate railing. I still have it and plan to restore it. * Photo 4: The barley twist table and chairs. I love that plate rail. The paneling was put up on several random walls to keep the crumbling plaster from falling off. * Photos 5-8: 2018 The dining room Before and during clean up of Marty's possessions and getting rid of the pet stained carpets. The Western light is so beautiful in the afternoon. * Photo 9: A shot of the Parlor looking into the dining room back in 2018 after being cleaned out. * Photo 10: Tom Dawson. Owner in the 1980s. I believe he is still alive but I haven't been able to connect with him. This is the original nursery in our 124 year old house! When we moved here, we decided to put all of the antique baby furniture that we used for our six kids, and an antique bed for our guests to use here. On this side of the room is the antique iron youth bed, the old Hoosier cabinet I used as a baby changing table, the vintage Easter baskets our kids used every year and old bunnies that I collected and love! There were so many homes being built all around the country around the turn of the century. The late 1880s and into early 1900 were booming in many cities. The stairs are only half way done, but they’re really looking good! From top to bottom, Edward is carefully adjusting and resecuring each tread and original moulding. This will also stabilize some loose spindles. Each part had original square nails so it’s likely never had significant work done to it. Good morning Divas. 💕 This garden lover plant nerd doesn’t grow much in the way of houseplants, but when I do… only the fussiest. I avoid those brown tips by watering with collected rainwater and I let them wilt a little before watering so I don’t get that crop of yellow leaves. I love them though, so pretty. 🌿

Just a little something about us! 💙 Throughout our marriage, my husband J.R. and I shared a love of old houses and old things! We lived in several old houses, and we went to antique stores, auctions, yard sales and flea markets often to find treasures! We carefully picked out antiques that we wanted to enjoy using daily, and love seeing every morning and every night. Some of our antique furniture we were fortunate to have passed down to us from both of our families. We always said that we couldn't take them with us when we go, but that we hoped our six kids would enjoy some of our antique "trusty old friends" when we were gone! *Update: please disregard the 2nd photo. My smug, ex-husband is standing there like he did something. I assure you he did absolutely nothing. Painted Kitchen Floor I was recently asked about the process I used to paint my kitchen floor, so here goes… We started with a raw pine floor. I primed it with Farrow and Ball wood floor primer. If it had been a floor with a finish on it, I would have lightly sanded it first. Then I used a coat of Farrow and Ball James White in the modern emulsion finish. Next I cut a poster board into the largest square I could get. I wanted large diamonds because the room is big. I would have done a smaller square in a smaller room. I used the square as a pattern and traced around it on the floor to create diamonds. I taped off each diamond with the tape going into the diamond that was going to remain white. This process took a long time. Next I painted every other diamond with Farrow and Ball Cooking Apple Green in the modern emulsion finish. If you want your floor to weather naturally, you can stop here. If not, I would recommend putting a top coat of satin or matte water-based poly on top to keep the floor protected. Do not use oil-based poly. It will yellow with time. I am NOT a floor expert. This is how I did my floor. Hope it helps! #paintedfloors #paintedkitchenfloor #oldhousecommunity
