During summer, the wood was replaced with metal grates to allow cool air to rise from underneath the house. ▪️Photo #3 shows a window near the ceiling where warmer air could escape to help with heating and cooling. ▪️Photo #4 is the entryway with a cutout of Jule Gilmer Korner, designer and original owner. Körner made his fortune by spearheading one of the first national advertising campaigns by painting murals of Bull Durham Smoking tobacco bulls on buildings and barns across the American east coast (Wikipedia) ▪️Photos #5 and #6 are details of wood paneling with egg and dart molding, beaded trim, rope molding, etc. It’s estimated there are 10,000 feet of beads! ▪️Photo #7 is the bedroom with a walkthrough window into a glassed-in little room overlooking the side portico. ▪️Photo #8 is one of 15 different fireplaces. ▪️Photo #9 is Cupid’s Park Theatre (so called for the Cupid murals) on the top level of here guests were entertained. Over 600 buildings did the great Ernst Ziller build accross Greece across the 19th century, making this extraordinary German architect one of Greece's most influental builders. Born in Saxony, Ernst Ziller was an ambitious student of the great Danish-Austrian Classical architect Theophil von Hansen, for whom he worked for the majority of his life. While assisting Hansen with his projects in Greece, Ziller was himself a highly sought-after architect, especially for the newly wealthy upper citizenry of Athens in the late 19th century, who comissioned him for countless mansions, palaces, and townhouses. Ever heard of the “rail mania” that took place in 1845? Sort of Victorian equivalent to the “dotcom” bubble and subsequent crash. Over 200 railway bills were passed in parliament creating a huge number of new private railway companies. When their shares dropped many people, including Darwin, Disraeli and the Brontë sisters, lost money. The idea that a trip to Edinburgh would take one day instead of three, including 27 stops to change horses, must have seemed very appealing. The big test for the new mode of transport took place when 1/3rd of the population (or 6mm people) in England wanted to go and see the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park. The peak volume of travellers took place on October 7th when 110,000 visitors travelled via King’s Cross. Quite amazing to imagine. Queen Victoria was one of the pioneer travellers from the station. She had her own carriages. The Duke of Wellington boarded the train sitting in his own coach with horses on board. What a sight. They must have been brave. Lots of “nerdy” information for tomorrow’s Kings Cross tour. By the way, I was surprised to learn that the King’s Cross station building was built 16 years before St Pancras station. King’s Cross was controversial in the Victorian times as it looked so different to the prevailing neo-gothic style. These two shops were built circa 1915 for Michael Mulconry, a saddler. Michael was born in 1840 in Sixmilebridge, Kilfinaghta, County Clare, Ireland, to Dennis Mulconry and Marcella Moloney. Michael was married to Catherine O’Connell and they had three boys; Michael, Denis and Francis. Before these two shops were built, the site was occupied by a three-room timber house and a four-room timber shop, both of which dated back to 1887 and were also owned by the Mulconrys. Michael ran his saddlery in the timber shop and rented the house out. When Michael moved into his new premises in 1915, he ran his saddlery in the shop on the right and Mrs Anne Gillooly ran her produce store in the shop on the left. Michael and Anne’s shops were part of strip of shops between High and Villiers Street that at that time included an upholstery business, a greengrocer and a bootmaker. On the corner of Flemington Road and High Street (now Wreckyn St) there was the Victorian Horse Parade Hotel that was run by Leonora Pudney. Michael continued to run his saddlery until his death in August 1923. Michael’s business was then taken on by his son, 42-year-old son Francis. Francis was known as Frank. He was a whipthong maker and a leather goods dealer. Apparently, a whipthong maker makes thongs, which are the braided section of a whip (please someone correct me if I am wrong). I WAS WALKING AROUND THAKURDWAR with Vinayak Talwar and Daniel Siqueira, both curious, happy walkers and explorers, the kind of people I like because they spot things that escape the eye of others. We walked up to a tiny shop called Sree Ganesh Old Paper & Bottles Mart to make some enquiries. There were no old newspapers or bottles I could see but Raj Gupta sat in his shop surrounded by dusty shelves overflowing with antiques – old photos and objects made of glass, wood, ceramics and brass. I asked him if he remembers an older clock that might have replaced the one at Wagle Building, just across the road. That set him off. “You have already missed the clock of Samarth Watch Co. It’s gone now, but I had approached the owners to buy that off,” Gupta told us. He figured we were the type who were interested in the old, the discarded and the forgotten. He peppered my friends with questions about the missing statue of Queen Victoria from the facade of the Victoria Terminus station. “Do you know where it is? How could it disappear?” He next quizzed us, “Do you know which is Bombay’s oldest church?” On hearing of my Gandhi collection, he told us how he had procured some of the collection of the now-dead Vanguard Photo Studio. Gandhi and Vallabhbhai Patel are known to have visited the studio. “I had a portrait of Vallabhai with his autograph on it. I managed to sell that,” he whispered. “Woh angrez ka statue dikha unko…wood wala,” he shouted out to an assistant. This was that piece. “Do you think this is Mozart or Shakespeare?” he asked. I think the quill is a good clue. The moustache too, Mozart didn’t sport one. To buy, or not to buy, was the question running through my head. Vinayak told him about the Shakespeare bust in a roundel on Oriental Building (IMG.2; center) at Flora Fountain. Gupta didn’t know about it. “Accha?” he sounded excited. “Dekhoonga next time,” he promised. This is the fun of being out on the streets – making connections with strangers and meeting men like Gupta who don’t just sit at their shops but can engage you with stories. PS: Maybe, I should have brought William home.
The building as billboard: the brief to R Stark Wilkinson when he was drawing up the Lambeth Doulton works was clearly to include as many of the company’s architectural products in the facade as possible, and then add a few more. For many years, Doulton concentrated on the heavy trade: with London’s population doubling between 1800 and 1840, the demand for clay drainage pipes (which replaced the leaky old brick gullies the Georgians had relied upon) was immense. By the 1860s, Doulton was sufficiently confident - and commercially acute - to move into finer ware, and the stage was set for Lambeth Faience, an artistic stoneware line that saw ceramic craftsmen and women creating unique studio pieces. This was a product that chimed with the contemporary Aesthetic Movement (Morris, Whistler etc), and Doulton was on to another winner. Architectural ceramics also boomed through the rest of C19, as Leicester’s Turkey Café (pic George Terezakis) and Glasgow’s extraordinary Doulton Fountain (Wikipedia Commons) illustrate. Sir Henry Doulton died in 1897, and the company ceased to be a vehicle for one man’s broad vision. Pullen Buildings People Power! Tucked away just of the ‘Wally Rd’ is this little architectural gem of Victorian tenements and workshop yards. They were almost demolished in the 70’s. Thanks to a group of passionate squatters they survive today as a conservation area. Charlie Chaplin once lived in a flat here and it was also a filming location for ‘The Kings Speech’. Delighted to share our first path project of the year for this rather grand period property in Newport, South Wales. A curved design at the request of the client to accommodate the asymmetry of the gate posts and front door. An elegant black and white check design was chosen, elevated with a touch of grey in the border. Completed with reclaimed rope edgings and slate step.
