Happy Sunday! As we plan our next buying trip, we will definitely take a day out to visit the historic and beautiful county town of Herefordshire, England. It lies on the River Wye, close to the Welsh border. The name Hereford comes from the Anglo-Saxon “here”, an army of formation soldiers, and the “ford”, a place for crossing in river. The history goes back well before the 7th Century and the Cathedral dates from around 1079. Doug and I love to visit this glorious cathedral. It’s a privilege to be able to sit in such a magnificent and sacred place. The current 6 span stone Wye Bridge was built in the 1400s. Walking across gives me such a deep sense of times past. Millions of feet have walked, run, marched and rode across this amazing piece of engineering brilliance! Vitruvius Britannicus - a decisive shaping of classical English architecture 🏴 You can find us with this handsome set on stand A1 at @firstslondon in the @saatchi_gallery. Colen Campbell (1676–1729) was initially a brilliant young lawyer, but in the years following the Act of Union Campbell reinvented himself as an architect. He launched his new career in 1712, when he designed his first building, Shawfield Mansion in Glasgow. In 1714, he was invited by a group of booksellers to contribute to their work on British buildings, ‘Vitruvius Britannicus’, and bring his new architectural look and own designs to what would otherwise have been a fairly conventional topographical record of well-known public landmarks and private estates. The text of Campbell's introduction was “a powerful statement of pride in the achievement of British architects, a call to order against the extravagance of Italian baroque architecture" (Connor).

Sneak peek of our Tufnell Park project before the clients move in and we get the professional photos done. This project was a complex conversion of two houses into one. We incorporated a lower ground flat into the existing house. A generous spiral staircase winds down to the lower levels allowing light and a visual connection from the upper living rooms to the lower dining spaces. This geometry is subtly recalled in the spiral twists of the tala light filaments. A seating area is provided next to the the window on the top of the stairs. The material palette of the kitchen made of Fenix panels, quartz worktop and Kit Kat recalls the materiality of river stones. Our staircase was bespoke designed inhouse and fabricated by Excell Stairs. The kitchen was built by K&D Joinery. Great work by an amazing team led by James Barker. Working through complex site constraints James has carved a great deal of joy into the spatial sequence and details. More to follow. We’re looking forward to getting this one shot in the summer... We designed this stunning outhouse for a project in Cheam. The main house is currently under construction itself so the family are living in here. To celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week, our teams embarked on a Corstorphine & Wright Big Wednesday Wellbeing Walk in the sunshine, embracing the theme of "Movement". Some of our studios have enjoyed taking the time together so much, they are making it a monthly tradition. We also participated in a wellbeing webinar hosted by Rob at @thatday.uk which encouraged our teams to reset, reflect and take action on all aspects of our wellbeing, making space for our mental health.

Wells Cathedral, photographed by Frederick H. Evans, nearly universally accepted as the greatest photographer of architecture (though he also was adept at landscape photography and portraiture). Originally a rare book seller and friend of George Bernard Shaw, Aubrey Beardsley and William Morris, among others. Evans photographed all of the English cathedrals as well a good many of those in France. Evans preferred the platinum print and gave up photography altogether during WW1 when platinum was taken off the market as part of the war effort.

(Swipe>>) The first and last slides here are from ground level; the rest are from my tower tour (see yesterday’s post) in which we got right up next to the octagonal lantern over the crossing. Most of Ely dates back to the late 11th and early 12th Cs, and is Romanesque/Norman. However, in 1322 — by which time the Gothic revolution was in full swing — the original crossing tower collapsed. It was thus rebuilt; but instead of being replaced by a new tower on the same ground plan, the crossing was enlarged to an octagon — removing all four of the original tower piers and absorbing the adjoining bays of the nave, chancel and transepts — to define a new crossing far larger in area than the square base of the original tower- (See the second and third slides of my previous post to get a feel for this.) It was a radical move, and is now Ely’s most distinctive feature. The lantern designs and paintings we now see date from 1876 and were part of George Gilbert Scott’s Victorian “restorations” — Scott put his mark on many English churches (nearby Peterborough Cathedral comes immediately to mind).
