Sneak peek of our Tufnell Park project before the clients move in and we get the professional photos done. This project was a complex conversion of two houses into one. We incorporated a lower ground flat into the existing house. A generous spiral staircase winds down to the lower levels allowing light and a visual connection from the upper living rooms to the lower dining spaces. This geometry is subtly recalled in the spiral twists of the tala light filaments. A seating area is provided next to the the window on the top of the stairs. The material palette of the kitchen made of Fenix panels, quartz worktop and Kit Kat recalls the materiality of river stones. Our staircase was bespoke designed inhouse and fabricated by Excell Stairs. The kitchen was built by K&D Joinery. Great work by an amazing team led by James Barker. Working through complex site constraints James has carved a great deal of joy into the spatial sequence and details. More to follow. We’re looking forward to getting this one shot in the summer... Rob came to us wanting something to complement his hand built bbq oven with areas for food preparation, holding bottles of wine🍷 , utensils🥄 , towels, a lockable cupboard and other items including a herb 🪴 rack, baskets for bread 🍞 and a chopping area 🥒. As you can see we have incorporated lots of different things and built this station to fit in the area perfectly. We are delighted to wish a very happy anniversary to Chris Danks, our Finishing Process Leader, who is celebrating the remarkable achievement of working at Samuel Heath for 30 years. Chris started his career at Samuel Heath at the tender age of 16, working as a plater in the plating shop. ‘The first metal I plated was cadmium and, over the years, I moved on to many different finishes, even trying my hand at polishing, but decided plating was for me. I moved up to leading hand, and then became a supervisor, and now my role is Finishing Process Leader,’ he says. Chris has become something of an alchemist, conjuring up magic in the workshop. ‘I love creating new colours and finishes, and the chemistry challenges along the way, which keeps us on our toes,’ he reveals. Expert craftsmanship and an inspired blend of creativity and science leads to beautiful new finishes. ‘I have plated most metals over the years, but we are always looking for new finishes, and I have been involved with electrophoretic lacquers for more than 15 years, which involves the magic of mixing different dyes to create new colours and shades.’ Chris reveals that his favourite finish is chrome. ‘I love it for its cool-grey tint and its wearability,’ he says. And in a sneak peek at what’s to come, Chris also reveals, ‘I love the new finish we are developing, which is a gunmetal style finish and an exciting new addition to our collection.’ The future looks bright in Chris’s field. ‘The continued development of electrophoretic lacquer opens up a new world for different colours and fun times mixing the dyes to create new finishes. {RESERVED} This very unusual and striking teapot is such a rare and emblematic piece that a similar one is part of the V&A museum connection. Made in 1879 at the height of the Aesthetic Movement and the fascination with Japanese influenced decoration, this beautiful piece has very natural prunus blossom running around the cover and the centre of the body. The branches and flowers are all moulded, and then painted in this evocative silver that harks back to Japanese screens and lacquer furniture. The body combines a rich red-maroon and pale yellow ground, with flowering plants delicately gilded across both. White reserves and the feet combine to give a design that looks like partially open fans, the scalloping in the body of the teapot adding to the very clever design. The spout, handle, and particularly the finial of the cover continue the natural themes with branch-like moulding, and covered in fine gilded details with dots, circles, and little lines bringing everything to life. At the lovely rounded base, the four very cute little feet with concentric circles which give the piece such poise and a sense of fun. This rare kettle-style pot with its high handle is a design I particularly like, the pouring action is much easier on the wrist and more precise, particularly when the pot is full. Combined with the bold decorative style and so evocative of the period, I wonder if you can guess who the maker is? This superb piece is an important piece of tea history and wonderfully decorative in its own right.
