In 1977 Robyn Davidson embarked on a 9 month long journey across the Australian outback with her 4 camels and dog. From Brisbane, she was 27 years old at the time of her 1,700 mile journey, starting in Alice Springs and finally ending at the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Produced By Kenny Keener & Richie Wise, & Recorded @ Bell Studios In New York City In April 1974, The Song Was Released As The 2nd Single Off The Band's Self-Titled Debut Album "KISS" (1974). It Is A Cover Of Rock & Roll Singer Bobby Rydell's 1959 Song Of The Same Name, Written By Bernie Lowe & Kal Mann. The Album "KISS" Struggled To Stay On The Charts & The Band Was In Need Of A Single That Would Help. Neil Bogart, Founder Of The Band's Record Company Casablanca Records, Knew That A Catchy Single Could Save The Record. He Consequently Ordered The Band To Record "Kissin' Time", Hoping That It Would Achieve The Same Success As It Had For Bobby Rydell. The Single 1st Had To Be Drastically Reworked Because Of Lines Like "They're Smoochin' All Over, Even In St. Lou." A Song With Lyrics Like The Original 1's Were Ill-Suited To KISS' Then Leather-Clad Style. Kenny Kerner, 1 Of The Album Producers, Said About The Reworking Of The Song: "We Sat There, We All Had Pads & Pencils, & We Just Went Around The Board. And We Went, 'Alright, Well... They're Kissin' In'... & Somebody Would Go, 'Detroit'! And We'd Go, 'Alright, They're Kissin' In Detroit.' And That's How It Went. We Re-Wrote The Song In Like 20 Minutes." The Band Members Were Not Thrilled With The Record Company's Decision To Record The Song & Later Feature It On The Album, But They Were Pressured Into Going Along. With The Song "Nothin' To Lose" Serving As The B-Side, "Kissin' Time" Charted @ Number 83 On The Billboard Pop Singles Chart, & Number 7 On The Cash Box Chart In 1974. Produced By The Band, The Album Was Recorded @ Island Studios In Nothing Hill In London, England Between January & March 1973. After Breaking Up In April 1971 Due To Differences Between Frontman Paul Rodgers & Bassist Andy Fraser, The Band Had Reformed In January 1972. All Members Of The Band Made A Concerted Effort To Work Smoothly & Efficiently For Guitarist Paul Kossoff's Sake As He Was Suffering Due To An Addiction To Mandrax (Quaaludes). For Example, In A Symbolic Gesture All Tracks Were Credited To Every Member of The Band Regardless Of Who Actually Wrote Them. The Attitude To The Songwriting Was Also Vastly Different; there Are No Outright Rock Songs At All, & The Three Songs That Contain Fast-Paced Moments All Have Slower, More Introspective Moments. Also, Many Fans Have Interpreted Some Of The Melancholic Lyrics (Many Of Which Concern People In Some Form Of Emotional Distress) As Referring To Paul Kossoff. Spawning Only 1 Single: "A Little Bit Of Love" On May 5, 1972, "Free At Last" Was Reasonably Successful, Peaking @ Number 9 On the UK Album (OCC) Charts Making It Their Most Successful UK Album Since "Fire & Water" (1970). The Single "A Little Bit Of Love" Peaked @ Number 13; Despite Failing To Enter The Top 10, It Was Still Free's 3rd Best Selling Single Release (It Would Be Beaten By "Wishing Well" The Following Year). However, Problems Began Again When The Band Was Then Expected To Tour To Promote The Album, As Paul Kossoff Was Faced With A Task For Which He Was Not Physically Capable. Gigs Had Been Disastrous, With Andy Fraser Remembering That "You Could See People In The Audience Crying For Him, Longing For Him To Be All Right" (Quoted In Phil Sutcliffe's Liner Notes). Unable To Continue, Fraser Left The Band Permanently, Aged Just 20.
