Do you live in a bubble? Turns out I do! Here's another question: do you know what a Zine is? I assumed everyone did, but I've recently learnt that not many people do! I've been working within a group of women alongside business mentors @bhakti.business and @shakticreative_ recently to get some things happening, such as my website. I shared with the group and the mentors a webpage with a free download of a Zine I wrote recently about the yogic concept of ahimsa and how it relates to the genocide in Gaza. I'm eager to share this writing with yoga students and practitioners because I think it will inspire people and bolster those who need it. So I sought the group's feedback. The overwhelming response was "The webpage looks good Shae, but what's a zine?" Mind. Blown. What's a Zine?! Well, it's a (maga)zine. A mini magazine! "Shae, perhaps you could you call it a booklet? A flyer? A pamphlet? An E-Book" Cue visceral reaction during which my whole being resonated NOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo. Let me explain. A zine is a mini magazine, yes. But it is so much more than that. A zine is an underground, independent publication. Zines are associated with radical movements and student activism. Zines will often present edgy, alternative or even contraband information - which is outside of the mainstream narratives - in creative ways. Zines are not "booklets" or "pamphlets" or "flyers." Nooooooo! They are way cooler than that! Zines are sub-culture. Zines are revolutionary. So tell me did you know that? And would you like to read what I've written? In Bilivia, come in altri paesi sudamericani, coloro che peesentano tratti somatici indigeni erano associati a pregiudizi inerenti la loro ignoranza, sporcizia, incapaci di parlare correttamente lo spagnolo ed appartenenti a classe sociale inferiore. 2024: “Teach ME, Treat ME” I’m too sick edit the text from this post from 2023 or maybe 2022? “Still Sick, Still Fighting” 15 years ago, “I got an unknown virus and never got better.” When I first got sick, and for many years after, I didn’t know that this was a common phrase amongst people with ME/CFS. It is now the phrase being repeated by millions more people with Long-Covid. Long COVID is not a new phenomenon and Long COVID wouldn’t be a crisis if our government had listened to people with ME/CFS. ME/CFS is a highly debilitating neurological disease affecting systems throughout the body. 25% of people with ME are housebound or bedbound, and only ~13% are able to work full-time. People with severe ME are often forced to exist in their beds, in isolation, for years. Now, half of the Long COVID community meets the diagnostic criteria for ME/CFS. This more than quadrupled the number of people living with ME/CFS in the US. 1. We are fighting for a warp speed response to Long COVID and ME/CFS. 2. We are fighting for a massive clinical response that educates our medical community on how to diagnose and treat these conditions. 3. We are fighting for patients to lead the charge in determining how to prioritize our research agenda. 4. We are fighting for societal and economic support. 5. Being a spiritual activist is for me based in being a defender of the sacred. In a deep love and reverence for the natural world that we are part of. It’s a commitment to reciprocity, acknowledging that our lives are intertwined with all of nature. In defending the natural world we defend ourselves, for in the roots of the forests and the depths of the seas, in all aspects of nature, is the promise of a thriving and resilient future for all life on Earth - because we are all interrelated and interconnected. Today, we did our audio mixing of The Question at Berkeley Sound Artists. This sound studio was the same one where some of my favorite films had their post-production work done. I saw pictures and posters for One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Dragon and Kiss of the Spider Woman. I was in heaven and inspired that I got the opportunity to work in such an amazing place. What impact does a funding shortfall of $1.8 billion have on Victorian public schools? 👉 83% of principals reported teacher shortages at their school. 👉 Over 80% of teachers said that they had taught merged classes due to the shortages 👉 12% of principals described their school as well-resourced but only 3% of teachers did. 👉 More than half of teachers reported a decline in student wellbeing (and 85% reported a decline in teacher wellbeing and morale). 👉 Less than one quarter of teachers said the amount of counsellor support at their school was adequate (21% said there was none). 👉 70% of teachers work more than 40 hours a week due to excessive workloads. 👉 Only 22% of teachers are now committed to teaching until retirement. Travesía Queer al Teide 🌋 22 de abril Montaña Blanca - Mirador de la Fortaleza (3500m). 8 kms y +1300m. Bajo las nubes llovía con fuerza y una vez por arriba el sol radiante nos calentaba caminando por terreno volcánico de piedra pómez. Las coladas del volcán eran impresionantes y la obsidiana brillaba negra y afilada. A unos 2800m, une participante empezó a tener síntomas de mal de altura, pero no fuimos consciente de ello, pensábamos que le costaba subir por el peso de la mochila. Entonces pensamos que lo mejor sería subir dos personas más rápido, dejar las mochilas y bajar para ayudar a le compa. Al llegar arriba, la llamada de la otra persona que se quedó ayudando, nos dice que es seguro mal de altura y lo mejor es montar vivac de emergencia a esa altitud para ver cómo va evolucionando. A la mañana siguiente no mejora y se decide que lo mejor es bajar, lo cual fue clave para mejorar su estado. ¡El vivac a pie de volcán fue impresionante! 🌋23 de abril Mirador de la Fortaleza - Pico Teide - Área recreativa de Chío. 18 kms y -2130 m, +185m. Las dos personas que hicieron vivac a 3500m lograron subir al pico (3714m) a la mañana siguiente y continuar con la ruta. Las otras dos personas bajaron, porque no mejoraron los síntomas. La persona afectada por mal de altura se bajó hasta la Orotava para recuperarse y la otra se unió a la ruta planificada justo antes de pasar por las cuevas negras (cuevas formadas por la colada del volcán).
