La "chasse aux trophées" est un sujet de controverse depuis longtemps en Afrique du Sud. Elle consiste à élever des animaux, notamment des fauves, dans des enclos restreints pour les relâcher et permettre à des chasseurs fortunés, souvent étrangers, de les abattre en échange d'une somme importante. Les trophées issus de ces chasses comprennent généralement des têtes ou des peaux d'animaux, que les chasseurs rapportent chez eux. Face à une opposition croissante, notamment de la part de campagnes internationales visant à interdire l'importation de ces trophées, le gouvernement sud-africain a annoncé en 2021 son intention d'interdire l'élevage de lions destinés à la chasse. Une commission ad hoc a travaillé sur cette question au cours des deux dernières années, et la ministre de l'Environnement, Barbara Creecy, a déclaré lors d'une conférence de presse au Cap que cette commission recommandait "la fermeture du secteur de l'élevage en captivité, y compris la détention de lions, ainsi que leur utilisation à des fins commerciales." Pour permettre aux éleveurs de s'adapter, une période de transition de deux ans est prévue avant la mise en œuvre complète de l'interdiction. Le Conseil des ministres sud-africain a donné son accord pour un arrêt progressif de l'élevage de lions et de rhinocéros, mais cette interdiction doit encore être transposée en loi, un processus qui pourrait susciter des débats intenses. BEST REEF SAFE SUNSCREENS 🚨 Now that it’s that time of year again, let’s talk sunscreen this afternoon. Did you know that most sunscreens damage our coral reefs? Yes! Many sunscreens have active ingredients that are incredibly damaging to marine life. Oxybenzone and octinoxate in particular are known to damage and kill sea animals. A lot of the focus is on coral reefs, where sunscreen has been causing coral bleaching. This is why sunscreens without harmful chemicals are called “reef-safe”, but it’s not just coral reefs that are being affected. Algae, urchins, fish, shellfish, and even marine mammals are affected by sunscreen. Reef-safe sunscreen helps protectall ocean life, and by extension, all life on Earth. Maybe “Ocean-Safe” is a better term. FUN FACT: Hawaii is the first place to pass legislation to ban the sale of sunscreen containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, chemicals that are harmful to coral reefs. The ban went into effect in January 2021. Following Hawaii’s lead the following places such as Palau, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Bonaire, and Key West, Florida, have also taken similar measures to prohibit the sale or use of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. This is why we need to always use reef safe sunscreen no matter if you are out in the ocean, lake, or rivers. I want to educate people and hopefully get more people to realize that the products we buy and the companies we support matter if we are going to have a healthy happy earth. If we don’t do something now then it’s possible we may kill off our entire coral reef by 2050. Without a coral reef…. Well let’s just say. Throwback to raising tons of monarch butterflies on my porch in Florida. This is one of the things that kept me going during the earlier months of the pandemic and I’ll always be grateful to these beautiful babies for it. They sparked my love of preservation, #entomology and #lepidoptera, and ultimately put me on the path to creating the work I do now. Some of my current pieces include butterflies from this time, as not all of them could be released due to damaged wings or other abnormalities. So many were though, sent off to mate or migrate as they’re meant to. The #monarchbutterfly population continues to be in desperate need of repair. The Biden administration is increasing the royalty rates for drilling on public lands for the first time in over 100 years, @nytimes reported. The higher fees aim to better compensate taxpayers for exploiting public resources that all Americans own. The rates companies will pay for new oil and gas leases on public and federal lands are going up from 12.5% to 16.67%. According to the government, this could bring in over $1 billion between now and 2032. With the new rules, the Biden administration aims to “disincentivize speculators and irresponsible actors.” It also aims to have drilling companies cover more clean-up costs for abandoned wells, which taxpayers currently pay for. Abandoned wells release methane gas into the atmosphere. Per the UN, exposure to methane leads to one million premature deaths yearly. Sealing the wells can help prevent these deaths. Not only could the new rules relieve the financial burden on taxpayers and save lives, but closing the wells will also significantly impact communities by mitigating air and water pollution.
