FVC FACT – DROSERA | In Western Australia, the genus Drosera commonly known as Sundews, represents one of the most fascinating and diverse groups of carnivorous plants, adapting ingeniously to the nutrient-poor soils of the region. Drosera typically occur within the South-west Botanical Province that contains a variety of habitats, from coastal plains to mountain ranges. This genus is represented by 24 species within the state, showcasing a wide variety of forms and sizes, from the tiny Drosera pygmaea to the larger Drosera gigantea. Sundews are particularly known for their sticky, glandular leaves that attract, trap, and digest insects. Utilising a strategy that has evolved over millions of years, Drosera secrete a sticky substance that lures and entraps their prey. Here you can see a little big crustacean, called tanaidaceo. It is a benthic animal, also if sometimes I find it in my plankton net. As you can see it is a female and has some eggs. It have two big "claws" and also a strong mandible. It has compound eye, as most of the crustaceans. This animal is able to swim but it isn't made to live in the water column, it basically sink. Planktonic organisms usually have huge "antenna" to float better. I want to tell you something about this photo, to take it I used a technique that allows me to get all in focus, focus stacking (z-stack) and also image stitching, because it was too big to fit in the field of view of my objective. In total I took 2446 photos. Another thing I want to say, if you have seen the stories you may already know, I changed the HBO lamp, that's the mercury lamp I use for fluorescence microscopy. And that’s a wrap for Workshop 2024 for the masters students in the dept of zoology and animal biodiversity here at the U of Tana in Madagascar’s capital! Marina and I really enjoy giving these short workshops on specific topics within our wheelhouses when in Tana. This time, we focused on the IUCN red list assessments, i.e., on how species attain their status as Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable. We walked through the different criteria by which species are assessed (like population size reduction, geographic range, etc), showed some examples from the lemur world, and then gave students data to practice assessing species in small groups. We ended by talking about the challenge of assessing and identifying the mouse and dwarf lemurs, given their nocturnal habits and crypticism. We shared our general pipeline for field, lab, and data work to help fill current gaps and encouraged students to collect data during their field missions that can be used in future assessments. Beyond giving information to students and building community, these workshops are a good opportunity for us to practice speaking, teaching, and communicating. I love the challenge of finding ways to share complex info that make it digestible and usable for participants! And now we can turn our attention to preparing for upcoming field work. The APIZ initiative, which advocates for traditional honey-making processes, is renowned for its beneficial effects on biodiversity and environmental health. APIZ's method of producing honey prioritizes bee health, which in turn, aids in the preservation of ecosystems. Healthy bee populations are vital pollinators, essential to maintaining diverse plant life and the broader wildlife that relies on these plants. Calling all Willow Warriors! This coming Saturday the 11th we're holding another working bee on the Tyenna River. We're aiming to get 200 plants in the ground to help kick start a riparian zone. Never planted a tree before? No worries, we'll show all the tips and tricks to plant successfully. We will meet at Maydena (Junee creek bridge) at 0930 on Saturday the 11th of May and work through to 3pm. We will provide all the required tools,PPE and refreshments but please bring some lunch and water and clothes/boots you don’t mind getting muddy.
