Turkey Vulture Canon EOS 80D Again - posting from work lol. So another digital shot. This was my first and only time out to this refuge. I need to go again, it’s pretty and full of wildlife. Reed Bunting....... Easy to see why the females are so hard to spot in amongst the reeds, great camouflage! Taken at RSPB Marazion Marsh, an early walk at dawn is a brilliant time to listen for their call and spot one. Helmetshrikes in general can be sort of odd but super cool looking birds. The Retz’s Helmetshrike, in particular, has this red wattle around its eye that resembles a flower. These birds tend to roll in large groups where they noisily make their way through deciduous woodlands, like motorcycle gangs of the bird kingdom. It’s said that certain vocalizations from their broad range of songs can signal social status. I’ll never forget the day my girlfriend and I spent birding with @_roamingwithrowan_ and his lovely partner Lynn. The birding gods were in our favor that day as we saw everything on my target list. At one point we said“ “well, this is going well… lets try for the Retz’s Helmetshrike.” We hadn’t even heard it calling but decided to try to calling it regardless. Sure enough, after our first attempt, a big group came right outta the forest. I couldn’t believe our luck. Big thanks to Gary and Lynn for being such fun and intelligent guides. A brood parasite, the Lesser Honeyguide comes from a family called Indicatoridae (or ‘indicator birds). The family gets their namesake from a peculiar behavior of guiding humans to beehives to harvest honey. Although this has only been proven to happen through the guidance of 1 of the 16 species in this family, the Greater Honeyguide. The phenomenon has specifically been observed in Tanzania amongst the indigenous Hadza people. Since Tanzania is my next stop, I intend to go meet this group and find out more.
