With about 36hrs in #NYC, we had to pick our time efficiently and sadly didn’t get to see many friends (didn’t tell anyone in fact since we’d only be in town for a day and a night). But here’s what we did (1 of 2 posts): First, we took the little one to @amnh, one of my favorite places in the city since I was myself a youngling. We focused on the African exhibition, Hall of #Biodiversity, Butterfly House, and the current “Insects in Peril” photography show by the incredibly talented @levonbiss, which documents 40 incredible but imperiled species from specimens from the Museum’s research collection in large-format photographs - some were as large as 4.5x8’ tall! These iPhone snaps don’t do Levon’s images justice so please go see them in person if you can. What we loved about this show, other than the incredible beauty and detail of the subjects, were the substantive recommendations for how each of us can help endangered insects (including many pollinators) which didn’t muck about by saying just “plant more flowers.” No, in fact the number 1 recommendation was: “Vote for insect #conservation. After a single town in Canada successfully banned pesticides, more than 180 others did the same. Vote for the world you want-support candidates that prioritize habitat protection and scientific research.” Teaching citizens - especially younger ones - to exercise our democratic agency is so critically important. If you read this week‘s rather alarming and depressing survey from over 300 climate scientists about global inaction on #climatechange, you’d know that 80% of scientists say the biggest obstacle to fighting climate change is “political will.” Not technology, not energy science- but political will. The good news is this is something we CAN change - by voting. At your local election, at your state elections, and damn right at the federal election in November, vote like your life and that of your family’s depends on it. All of the stuff people are outraged about right now (and there’s a lot) pales in comparison to the threat we all face if we don’t elect leaders who are committed to making bold action on #climate.

Cucumber transplants 🥒 . . . Drip line and sprinklers!..... Yes yes i know we are all about efficiency and sustainability but the way the sun has been heating up the earth...our Transplants wouldn't stand a chance otherwise. The game plan is having the timer on 6hr intervals and over head watering twice daily for 1 week after transplant to give the young ones the best chance at surviving... . . There after they will be solely on drip and sprinklers will be turned on as needed based on weather.. Rainbow trout are a native species found in Yosemite’s low elevation waterways, where they serve as top predators, playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the aquatic ecosystem. Beyond their ecological significance, they also offer recreational opportunities for fly-fishers. However, these trout, along with other cool-water fish species, are vulnerable to rising water temperatures. Warmer water temperatures reduce the amount of oxygen dissolved in the water, which is essential for the survival of trout. This vulnerability underscores the importance of monitoring and mitigating factors contributing to water temperature increases to preserve the health of trout populations and the ecosystems they inhabit (Yosemite National Park). Someone with astonishing eyes hitchhiked on me, out of the water. Even though my focus on calcium carbonate formations has been mostly on seashells, it’s worth nothing that lobsters, crabs, corals and many other marine shell-bearing species are threatened by ocean acidification. Intelligence and fragility, beauty and threat—ultimately, the series I’m working on bridges these states while holding them, tenderly and metaphorically, with the whole body. How not? How possible is it to not love these tiny beings and their whole eyes? Beyond a life plan, it’s a plan of existence.
