Some of our super special bee species include: Stingless bees, Carpenter bees, Blue banded bees, Teddy Bear bees, Leafcutter bees, Resin bees, Masked bees and Homalictus bees! A lot of these are solitary species, so you won't see them hanging out in hives, and some are even ground dwelling, preferring to make their homes in the dirt! We all know bees are incredibly important for pollination, but did you know that one third of the world's food production relies on the help of bees! Some bees have even evolved specific pollination techniques for those harder to pollinate plants. Last Monday, I testified at the City of Eugene's City Council Meeting. I mostly talked about how Eugene needs to call on the University of Oregon to take swift climate action, since UO has been reluctant to do so, but I also mentioned the need to electrify buildings.
Today our Inspirational Woman Alice @thisisalicesworld @thestylingbank tells us about her learning as an assistant stylist and her challenges as she navigates her job as a stylist. ‘I worked with lots of different stylists for a few years, costume stylists, interior stylists, fashion, celebrity stylists, on big editorials, preparing celebrities for events, an interior stylist gave me a really good insight into props and set dressing, a really good costume stylist called Mr Gammon trained me really well on preparation. He had a big store of clothes and we would go through his rails first and fill in any gaps from elsewhere. I also worked with Anna Foster, who started ELV Denim…At the time she was a celebrity stylist and worked for i-D Magazine. She gave me a great insight into; (this was right at the beginning of the sustainable fashion movement) that what we’d stereotypically known as fashion, had a new way of thinking, and direction and how we should be more mindful of brands and the usage of fast fashion.’ ‘When I started working with my own clients, it was right at the beginning of online fashion and I realised that now I could, with a click of a button buy in all these clothes and have them delivered. As an assistant I had spent years schlepping around shops, buying suitcases and suitcases of clothing and trailing them back with me. It was amazing to have everything delivered to your doorstep, it made it all so easy.’ ‘However, with time I became much more aware of the practises involved when working that way and was increasingly seeing what you were expected to bring to shoots, then all the waste it created. That’s when it started feeling wrong and didn’t sit well with me. It really felt awful.’ D: The reality is that the retailers don’t even try to sell them again. ‘I believed it was the same as when you go into a shop and the merchandise goes back on the shop floor and is bought by somebody else, that that was what was happening online too but it’s not the case…and I believe that’s what most people think when they return their clothes, but it’s not, the returns go straight to landfill here or oversea. Diese ungesättigten Fettsäuren sind bekannt dafür, den Appetit zu zügeln und ein langanhaltendes Sättigungsgefühl zu vermitteln. . Aber auch ich als Avocado-Esser habe meine Bedenken. Die Avocadoproduktion erfordert eine enorme Menge an Wasser. Für ein Kilo Avocados werden rund 1000 Liter Wasser benötigt. In Anbetracht des weltweiten Wassermangels fällt es mir schwer, diese Frucht bedenkenlos zu genießen. . Aus diesem Grund versuche ich, Avocados so selten wie möglich zu essen. The United Nations warned that every year more than 400 million tons of plastic waste is produced in the world, of which only 9 percent is recycled. 79 percent of waste generated from plastic accumulates in landfills or in the environment, while only 9 percent is recycled, and 12 percent is incinerated. And 13 million of plastic waste is thrown into the oceans every year. If current consumption patterns and waste management practices continue, then by 2050 there will be around 12 billion tons of plastic litter in landfills and the environment. Despite many countries banning its use, every year an estimated 5 billion plastic bags, which means almost 10 million plastic bags every minute, are consumed across the globe. Controlling plastic waste needs a global approach, and doesn’t just involve promoting plastic waste recycling, although this is an important part of the control. I started making some of my own clothes from natural fibres last year, and it made me happy for so many reasons. A particular favourite was the apron I designed using elements of several other examples, so I’m making another in some lovely gingham linen. This is all part of me breaking up with Fast Fashion, cos it sucks big time. Australians discard an average of 23kg of textiles per person, per year, which contributes to the massive issue around fashion waste. Aside from clothing that just ends up in landfill (giving it to op-shops ≠ a circular system unless that’s where you buy your clothes too), there’s also the issue of synthetic clothing shedding microplastics into our waterways every time we wash them. And then there’s the human cost involved in mass-produced fast fashion: if you buy a top that costs just a few bucks, I’m sad to say that it’s almost guaranteed there was at least person involved in its creation who wasn’t being paid a living wage. There’s so much to talk about in this space, but the long and short of where I’m at now is: I’m having a crack at making some clothes from natural fibre materials. I figured, people have handsewed clothes for centuries, many without much training, so it’s likely less tricky than I first imagined. I sewed 3 dresses and two aprons last year, and the realisation I came to through the process was that sewing really *is* much easier than I ever thought. Basically it’s just making tubes of fabric and then sewing them together with a series of simple running stitches.
