More mini butterwort madness.. Pinguicula emarginata x rotundiflora HC C has joined the party, with some very nice pattern and evenly sized ruffled petals. However, clone B (second photo) is still my favorite in the group…and I think is deserving of the moniker “pinkeye.” And then…a dilemma. Third pic is the last of the 5 P. immaculata x emarginata clones to bloom, and it’s got a pretty heavy pattern with more intensity in certain patches than the other “in question” clone in the last pic. The latter was the one I originally was going to sell off before I saw the patterning in its flower…but I think between the two it might be the one back up on the chopping block again because I only have room for 4. It's officially May Grey weather in Southern California, but that doesn't stop these blooming tomatoes @bigpurpletomato from Norfolk Plant Sciences. These new offerings were made with the lab technology known as 'CRISPR', which is a genetic modification technique already used by certain bacteria as a form of acquired immunity to bacteriophages. This technique was used to confer, or incorporate, anthocyanin-producing genes from snapdragons into cherry-type tomatoes. I believe this process does not confer any disease resistance, but I imagine the parent tomato (before modification) was pre-selected for its robustness; if not, it makes the modification process rather moot to have few expensive tomatoes hanging from weak plants. Given the rapidity with which bacteria, viruses and invertebrate pests can evolve resistance to chemical warfare waged by farmers, introducing resistance to such pests yet imparted by genetic modification is restricted by much the same forces. One cannot beat Darwin. In that sense, this venture is a journey in a different direction: taking a tomato and making it more nutritious in far fewer generations than selective breeding would require. Critics of this scheme might point to the early 2000s anecdotal reports that GM corn (e.g StarLink), intended for animal consumption, was linked to gastrointestinal stress among accidental human consumers. Some scientific studies have dispelled this concern, however there is always some uncertainty whether DNA encoding for say, new proteins, incorporated into the genome of plants where it previously did not exist may interact with the human digestive system in unknown and unpredictable ways. El cardo común (Galactites tomentosus) es una especie de planta herbácea anual que puede alcanzar una altura entre 25-100 cm, con una raíz tuberosa, con hojas y tallos espinosos, erecta, cubierta en gran parte con indumento blanquecino de pelillos. Los tallos son simples o ramificados en la parte superior, circulares, finamente alados, con alas onduladas de tonos verdosos y con hojas en casi toda su longitud. Las hojas basales son grandes de 30-50 cm, poco duraderas y que se encuentran en forma de gran roseta en la base del tallo, lisas, simples, cortamente pecioladas, inversamente lanceoladas y con los márgenes aserrados. Las hojas caulinares de menor tamaño se distribuyen de forma alterna a lo largo del tallo, son sésiles, profundamente divididas y con los lóbulos foliares armados con finísimas espinas. La lámina por el haz, es de color verde y recorrida por líneas blanquecinas, mientras que por el envés son tomentosas. Las flores se disponen en capítulos pedunculados y terminales, son finamente tubulares y con tonalidades lila o púrpura dispuestas en capítulos de 3-4 cm de diámetro, con un receptáculo en la base en forma de campana invertida cubierta de espinas. I see some signs of new growths near the base of the plant recently, so hopefully it will take off soon, it probably also needs a bigger pot to grow better, but I find some Hoyas like smaller pots and love being root-bound 🤷🏻♂️ . I found this cool shell planter at thewateringcan few weeks ago, and at first I was going to find some house plants or succulent for it, but since it has no drainage, I figured my trailing Tillandsia streptophylla queen might be a good fit! 💚 . Air plant tip of the day 😁🌿🙌🏼 When in bloom, you can still water your Tilly, but try to avoid getting the flowers wet, this will prolong the bloom period and also prevent fungal issues, I do so by spraying just the leaves or dip the plant in a shallow bowl so the water doesn't get to the bloom. .
