Mother’s Day came a day early in the Trandahl home this year. It was just too sunny and beautiful out to delay taking my beloved out to a local greenhouse to get loads of flora to plant in our pots and beds. It’s sort of our Mother’s Day tradition each year. Her haul were a variety of marigolds, lemon verbena, Greek oregano, thyme, lemon balm, a variety of small tomatoes, red onions, and a variety of peppers. Additionally, since Story Ann was a helpful sweetie at the greenhouse, she was able to pick out her own flowers and flower pot to take care of this summer. My wife’s late father had a lifelong green thumb, and she inherited it. Putting her hands in good dark earth, growing and caring for plants and vegetables is not only in her blood, but it’s a way for her to still feel connected to her father, though he’s now on grander adventures elsewhere. As for me, good simple natural things are intensely inspirational to me, and anyone who has read my poetry knows my wife is my muse. So when my wife flexes her green thumb and does her thing, it puts me in the mood to write earthy poetry filled with adoration, growth, simplicity, and quietude. This another day where I’m filled with gratitude. got a lot done, but most importantly, the trees that were killing the main one in the middle have been cleaned out so hopefully the roots can start healing. It’s kind of swampy here, though, so maybe not. We have to get the roots out still of not just the old trees but these prickly plants that our dogs keep trying to stick their noses into. We want to put wildflowers in the area but will need to use soil we’ve put aside bc this ground isn’t good for growing anything.
