Inga edulis, also known as Ice Cream Bean. Got these seeds from Kelli of #TreeHouseChicks who coated them in Cinnamon to prevent mold and fungus plus moist paper toweling to keep the seeds alive during their trip from Hawaii to San Francisco via snail mail. All arrived in perfect condition and quickly rewarded her efforts and my investment with 100% germination. After a few weeks of babying on a heated seed mat in my grow room with a mix of natural and artificial illumination these are ready to be hardened off on the porch where they will hopefully acclimate to our mild/chilly micro-climate. Each seed by the way proved to be poly-embryonic! These came from an especially big pod producer and I'm crossing my fingers that the largest and most vigorous of these sprouts will eventually survive our frost free Winters and produce yummy treats. These are legumes! They fix nitrogen in the soil and the giant pods when cracked open look like they hold a peeled banana, but it breaks up into sections - each with a large kernel (often sprouting right in the pod) surrounded by a cotton candy like fluff which you suck off the seed for a culinary reward reminiscent of vanilla ice cream. Careful, don't eat the raw seeds! Note the sky. 05/12/2024 - Panache Fig Tree NOTES: starting on year two for this one. Bought it from the Arbor Gate Nursery in Tomball, TX. We did have fruit last year, but it did not mature. Had to pick and throw away most of the figs. This year is weird! Didn't even get time to grow new branches that much and it began to fruit! Kinda crazy, since these are suppose to ripen early fall. We're a long way from fall, maybe we'll get two crops this season?! The only thing I did at the beginning of the season was add a mulch layer to the container. Seems ro be a lot more helpful. I noticed that with the other fog container growers as well. When’s a 🍐 Ripe and Ready to Harvest? 🤔 Unlike most fruits, Pears don’t actually ripen successfully on the tree. They’re best picked once they’ve reached their full size, but before they begin to ripen. They can be left on the tree to ripen, but will often develop an unpleasant texture. But how do you know when they are ripening? Pears ripen from the inside out, so you can’t easily judge their ripeness by looking at the skin. But an easy way to test if a pear is ripe, is to just gently squeeze near the stem end. If it gives slightly, it’s likely ready to be eaten. To speed up the ripening process once picked, I just pop them in a paper bag for a couple of days. The bag will capture ethylene, most ripening fruits produce ethylene which converts starch to sugar, and causes the fruit to soften. Drawf peach tree ravaged by peach leaf curl last season. Cut her way back over the winter and treated her several times with copper fungicide. First leaves this Spring were also curled. Treated her again with the fungicide and removed the curled leaves. Now the new leaves are healthy. But no flower buds. Trying my hand at a fruit tree for the first time and so far not so good. We spent today planting seedling trees we purchased from @indianadnr 🌳 38 down, 352 to go! Today we planted mostly pawpaw trees, chokecherry and a chestnut oak that will provide much needed shade in the backyard between the house and our market garden. Each seedling received a shovel of compost from @mmasterson3 @grounddown_fwcompost and was wrapped in a poncho of burlap from @utopiancoffee and topped with wood chips from Shelton Tree Service. 🍑 The best way to start the morning in the garden as I harvested the first batch of peaches and a solitary fig! 🍈 Despite the unpredictable hard freezes that took a toll, killing several branches, nature’s resilience shined through with new offshoots that are carrying fruit 🌱 My ladies 🐝 have outperformed as usual and pollinated “too many” blooms. It looks like the tree is carrying more than it might handle. Next year, I’ll take the leap and thin out the blooms early. For now, I’m just grateful for the bounty.
