Yesterday @josieburt1 cut the grass so I used some of the clippings to mulch the blueberry bed and the jostaberry/blackcurrant bed. If you remember, we used grass clippings to mulch the polytunnel and it’s doing a great job. As long as it’s not too thick it won’t go sludgy and boggy. It definitely keeps moisture in and slowly seeps nutrients into the soil as it rots down and the worms slowly pull it down into the soil. Of course, it also will help to keep weeds down although it doesn’t stop bind weed or thistles - they just push right through - but I have found them easier to pull! The only caveat to all of this is that you can only do this if you don’t treat your lawn with chemicals. Back to those currant bushes - the sawfly larvae are still busy destroying them but I’m hoping very much that the next generation will right now be under attack by nematodes. I may buy some more just for good luck. Onion seedlings are finally in the ground- I’ve found that separating the seedlings carefully and making a shallow trench is the easiest and quickest way to plant them. Planting them one at a time takes ages and it feels like you are trying to plant hairs!! THE JOURNEY - So it's been two weeks since we got our allotment plot ☺️ The plot hadn't been worked for a couple of years, so everything was VERY overgrown . We extended the bank holiday last weekend and dedicated four whole days to clearing as much as we could. We were super lucky as the site manager had already cleared a lot of the surface before we officially got the key. Our plan from the start was to get it clear, and put in a sturdy boarder. That way we know exactly what we're working with and can eventually create rows of beds inside 🥕🥦🍅 Clearing it was fairly straightforward. However, we have only removed surface overgrowth, the soil underneath is covered in the roots of couch grass (and various other unwanted roots). It's officially seed saving season. I decided after this coriander started to bolt earlier in the season I would just leave it in place and let it do its thing. I did manage to get some good size harvests off it before the weather simply got to warm and it inevitably bolted. Not long until these are ready to harvest and I can save some seed for next year and dry and grind the rest to use throughout the cold months. Starting your own food garden can be overwhelming, there is so much information out there with tips, tricks and advice, that getting started can feel like you are about to tackle Mount Everest. But, I promise you it doesn't have to be so daunting. My biggest advice to someone starting out is to research where you live. Find out your growing zone, look at your first and last frost dates online and then build from there. Grow based on the plants that work best in your growing zone. If like me you live in a cold zone then lean into growing more cold hardy crops. Find a handful of crops that work for the environment you live in and research everything you can about the plant. Find out everything, from it's best growing conditions, to what pests and predators to look out for and how to get rid of them if you come up against them. Work with the environment you live in and growing will feel much less daunting. Things are really springing into life at the allotment now we’ve had a good run of sunshine and warmth! The broad beans have flowered and the bees have been pollinating them. The lettuces are loving life in the sun. And the sweet peas are really climbing now! It feels so good to be filling the allotment up with all the plant babies 🌱 So far, from seed, I have planted out 🌱mangetout, broad beans, onions, Barlotti beans, French climbing beans, purple cauliflowers, squashkin, Turks turban squash, carrots, parsnips, cucumbers and a luffa 🌻Calendaulas, Ammi, sweet peas, Californian poppies and nasturtiums There’s a few more seedlings in the greenhouse at home, cosmos, sunflowers, tomatoes, summer psb, and spares of some of the above. I’m actually pleased it’s due to rain, as it will help to settle the plant babies into their new positions. Out at Wickes today I saw this thick paper for keeping floors clean while you do building work, I thought it would be great in a Polytunnel to keep weeds down? Just a thought, on the Plot my Dave set up the Auto watering system in the Greenhouse , we are trying the 3 min setting once every 12hrs, did well in the Polytunnel last year like that in the Beds hope it will work just as well this year in pots ? Split in two by a trained hazel hedge (there are ‘windows’ where you can view through) the outer plot is set out in a traditional manner with edged beds and a tool shed. Four months into our time at plot 31a! 🌿 We are now growing: rhubarb ✔️ blackberries ✔️ raspberries ✔️ potatoes ✔️ herbs ✔️ carrots ✔️ spring onion ✔️ lettuce ✔️ We have also added our own wildlife pond, and the kids love to spot the frogs each time they visit. We are currently battling a huge area of couch grass, which will remain covered for a while, but decided to uncover all of the beds this weekend and try out green manure in a couple. Progress has been slow this weekend with the heat (it was 24⁰ when we gave up today!) but we made progress nonetheless! Still more digging out of the bed to square it off - we're probably halfway there with removing the grass. We massively underestimated how long this task would take and how hard it would be - our plot is clay and I'm pretty sure I could take it into school for the children to model 😂 We did get the baby's tree planted - our council (@baberghsuffolk and @midsuffolk) give a tree to each baby born which is amazing. We've planted it in the middle of the section we are giving over to him, for when he's a little bigger. It's a Gala apple and I'm so excited by the thought of him picking apples from it as he grows up! My Misato Rose Flesh Radishes bolted 😭 I was so excited for these and they were growing so well. Not that I'm complaining about the weather at all! The tomatoes are now out at night (so long as the temp stays around 12 and above). That's meant a big reduction in morning and night faff as I've got around 24 of the things! Around 5 have tomatoes growing on them now and more flowering so hopefully we've almost made it to having early tomatoes. What glorious weather! 🌞 This Saturday was absolutely beautiful - finally! 🥳 We spent the morning wandering a local woodland & foraging more wild garlic, probably our last forage of the season. We then used the wild garlic to make lots of tasty dishes! 👩🏼🍳 Sunday was dedicated to the plot. I'll admit we haven't spent much time there lately. Between being sick, away & other commitments, the plot has taken a back seat in recent weeks. So, it was nice to spend the day prepping beds and starting to tackle the much needed weeding. Busy day on the lotty. #popsontheplot grass cutting and tying the bean canes up whilst I was on digging and planting duty! All this helped along by Bill my super supportive allotment neighbour who broke up some of the soil for me with his tiller. Thank goodness I’ve finally got some seeds and plants in the ground! The tomatoes are finally all out in the polytunnel. Good timing too because some were almost too big to fit in the car boot 😂 my first go at growing tomatoes from seed and by myself. Last time was when I was a kid and we grew them at my home in North Wales. Started building a new composter today which we are going to add planters on top and a surprise round the sides, also built a trellis for the runner beans to run up and continued turning the soil to flatten the land for baby girls area 🤩💚🌿 !!

There’s two little meadows, two ponds, the first one I dug age 6 and made out of a washing up bowl and now it’s teeming with life! 🍅 After taking lots of care to germinate various tomato seeds, and raise them in the comfort of a sunny bedroom window, then worry about them when they are taken to the greenhouse (rushing every morning to make sure they’ve survived the night), then potting on to make sure they get fresh compost and don’t get potbound 🫣 we always get a big bunch of random seedlings growing in the homemade compost, obviously growing from a composted tomato 🤣 . My girl and I spent the day together at the lottie plotty. We packed our cool bag and took all our lunch bits and drinks with us. I actually got everything done! I'm knacked and a little sun burnt, but it's done. Now, I can concentrate on getting bits potted on, more sowing, and keeping things maintained. Hooray!
