I wasn’t going to top my peppers this year, but the slugs seem to have done it for me. For a couple of days now I’ve seen slug trails in the poly tunnel, but for the life of me couldn’t find the culprit…until now! I found six of them all huddled together underneath a big pot I have at the end of the tunnel. Needless to say they have been evicted henceforth never to return to their cozy little pad under the pot. It's officially seed saving season. I decided after this coriander started to bolt earlier in the season I would just leave it in place and let it do its thing. I did manage to get some good size harvests off it before the weather simply got to warm and it inevitably bolted. Not long until these are ready to harvest and I can save some seed for next year and dry and grind the rest to use throughout the cold months. Starting your own food garden can be overwhelming, there is so much information out there with tips, tricks and advice, that getting started can feel like you are about to tackle Mount Everest. But, I promise you it doesn't have to be so daunting. My biggest advice to someone starting out is to research where you live. Find out your growing zone, look at your first and last frost dates online and then build from there. Grow based on the plants that work best in your growing zone. If like me you live in a cold zone then lean into growing more cold hardy crops. Find a handful of crops that work for the environment you live in and research everything you can about the plant. Find out everything, from it's best growing conditions, to what pests and predators to look out for and how to get rid of them if you come up against them. Work with the environment you live in and growing will feel much less daunting. We were a productive little team at the garden this afternoon! Seeds sowed in the greenhouse have had mixed success - the peas were shooting up so we have planted those out; other things were devoured by slugs or failed to germinate. Today we sowed runner beans, swiss chard, beetroot, rocket - no doubt they will soon catch up! A host of sturdy little tomato plants were planted into the greenhouse beds. These and everything else will need regular watering so if you have a bit of spare time or are passing through, please do use the watering cans and water butts to soak anything that looks thirsty! After trimming back one of my perennial Basil plants, I decided to save some of the flowers to pop in a vase inside. I've had luck growing cuttings doing this in the past so I may have some more to plant in the garden come spring. This year I grew everything inside under growlights. I couldn’t be bothered with the constant battle of keeping the slugs and snails off the seedlings in the greenhouse. Last year I went mad with garlic spray and crushed shells (they were pretty unscathed but I was constant work at home and the plot to keep them garlicky enough). In the years prior to that I’ve brought them in and out every night/morning and I just got fed up with it. The result this year has been lots of slow growing and spindly plants that only pepped up /started growing quickly when brought to the polytunnel. Now I’ve the battle of how to successfully harden them off when the plot is 15 mins away and all the plants are there. I’ve ended up with no end of kindly gifted plants from plot neighbours this year. And I’ll probably be bunging out more of my homegrown plants without sufficient hardening then dashing to the garden centre to replace what doesn’t survive. Next year I’ll do a combination of indoor and outdoor and bring the garlic spray back I think. It feels so good to be filling the allotment up with all the plant babies 🌱 So far, from seed, I have planted out 🌱mangetout, broad beans, onions, Barlotti beans, French climbing beans, purple cauliflowers, squashkin, Turks turban squash, carrots, parsnips, cucumbers and a luffa 🌻Calendaulas, Ammi, sweet peas, Californian poppies and nasturtiums There’s a few more seedlings in the greenhouse at home, cosmos, sunflowers, tomatoes, summer psb, and spares of some of the above. I’m actually pleased it’s due to rain, as it will help to settle the plant babies into their new positions. Yet another plant I'd never heard of 😂 but I've been learning about how it is a gardener's best friend when it comes to naturally improving their soil and feeding your plants 👌 and I've also been reading about it's healing properties when applied to bruises, sprains and even things like back pain and osteoarthritis 🙌 I'll definitely want to give that a go too🤞 . Bohnen 💚 Letztes Jahr hatte ich absolut kein Glück mit Bohnen, denn die Schnecken 🐌 hatten wirklich jeden Versuch zunichte gemacht. Aber neues Jahr, neues Glück. 🍀 Dieses Mal werde ich sie nicht direkt ins Hochbeet säen, sondern in der Anzuchtplatte vorziehen und hoffe, dass sie durch den Wachstumsvorsprung eine Chance haben. Da ich ein absoluter Fan von Chili con Carne und italienischem Bohnensalat bin, gehen die Buschbohnen Red Kidney und Cannellinibohnen ins Rennen. In der Anzuchtplatte im Hintergrund könnt ihr schon die Edamame erkennen. Im Milpa Kübel wird es wohl wieder die Neckargold werden. Da warte ich allerdings noch mit der Aussaat bis der Mais groß genug ist. Ein besonderes Dankeschön geht an @stef_und_joe für das Saatgut der Sojabohne und Red Kidney 🫶🏻🥰 Ich hoffe, dass ich in dieser Saison wieder eigenes Saatgut sammeln und leckere Bohnen ernten kann. When your garden gives you a lot of fresh produce you sometimes get challenged by the abundance. This fall I had to harvest lot of apples precautionary early because they were affected by the dimple bug. However they are still good for use, and because I would hate to waste anything I have grown (or bought), I created few new recipes: First I juiced some and made apple jelly. I finished off juicing some adding extra carrots to enjoy as a healthy drinking juice. Left over pulp could have easily been fed to our chickens, but instead I decided to incorporate it in a new version of apple/carrots cake including our eggs, some dates and almond flour. I didn’t follow any recipe and just my nose. It turned out delicious and very moist and is s nutritious snack rather than just a sweet cake. Then I still had some leftover apple pulp and created a new version of an Anzac apple and raisin cookie with coconut oil instead of butter. Also a very nice turn out and healthier and better for you than ordinary biscuits.
