Love grows. As the chrysanthemum season enters its peak, my love affair with them grows significantly. They are such underrated flowers, they come in different sizes, forms and colours, they sure will brighten up your day with their vibrant colours. They have an incredibly long vase life of 2 weeks. I am very glad I added them to the flower collection, because the more you grow, the more you will love them. On the other hand, I can definitely understand why they are underrated, compared to dahlias, they have a short growing season, and they flower after dahlias. As a gardener and flower grower, you really cannot compare your flowers and pick a favourite, just like you cannot pick a favourite child. While Sydney siders are bracing for more rain, we still enjoy the autumn sun today, and will likely have some rain falling over the weekend. Did you know that saffron (kesar) is the most expensive spice in the world? One flower only produces 3 vibrant, vermillion colored stigmas and it takes almost 150 flowers to produce 1 gram of saffron! Luckily saffron corms multiply underground each year, so you can enjoy bigger harvests over time. I planted my saffron corms in a galvanized steel container in my backyard in late summer (approximately 6 weeks before my average first frost date). I love using saffron to flavor and color rice dishes such as ‘Biryani’ and ‘Kheer’ (sweet rice pudding). A little bit goes a long way! In Indian culture, we also use it to make a refreshing drink called ‘Thandai’ in which milk is spiced with nuts, seeds, rose petals, saffron, nutmeg, cinnamon etc. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you must try my favorite saffron (kesar) flavored ice cream called Kesar-Pista Kulfi. I posted up on my local gardening group fb page and asked the question, back in May 2022. ‘What are these amazing lilies called the giant ones?’ Then I got this reply ‘do you mean these lilies? I’m sure I can dig some bulbs up for you, they are super spreaders’. So I got myself a baby lily plant for free and so did a few members. Tänään oli siemenperunoiden istutuspäivä lavatarhassa. Colombaa meni kahteen pitkään lavaan kasvihuoneen eteen ja puolestaan toisella puolella kasvihuonetta lavat saivat kerroksen maatunutta lantakompostia pintaan. Istukassipulit ja kukkakylvöt jäivät huomiseen kun aina välillä harhautuu tekemään jotain muuta. 😅 Nyt on yöksi luvattu sadetta ja se tulisi kyllä kuin tilauksesta. Saa nähdä ehdinkö vielä huomennakaan niitä sipuleita istuttaa kun on myös muutamia hedelmäpuita, mitä pitäisi istuttaa. Kevät on välillä yhtä kilpajuoksua siementen ja taimien kanssa, mutta ah, sitä satokauden odotusta sitten kun kaikki lavat on kylvetty ja istutettu täyteen. The cherry blossom is looking particularly good this year but I have an awful feeling that it might be its last hurrah because it's got something strange going on at the base of its trunk. Our local arborist thinks that it's a bacterial infection which is likely to prove fatal which is a real shame because it's a lovely tree. I normally look on the death of a plant as an opportunity to do something different but this tree is going to be a hard act to follow. If anyone has any Lily plants, it's time to keep a lookout for this pesky Lily beetle. It will destroy the plant in no time and lay more eggs. Yuge spinach leaves! My thumb in the bottom right corner for comparison. This plant is a volunteer that popped up last fall and lasted all winter, through plenty of snow and temps into the mid teens. It is now the biggest spinach we’ve ever grown! A few other things we’ve learned overwinter well: Fava beans, sorrel and lots of lettuce varieties. This fall I’ll be planting out more things to see what else thrives this way. This is our third summer in 7b and we’re still learning our new zone. After living in 9b my whole life, this is such a fun, new challenge!
