I wasn’t going to top my peppers this year, but the slugs seem to have done it for me. For a couple of days now I’ve seen slug trails in the poly tunnel, but for the life of me couldn’t find the culprit…until now! Still, the period of sunshine we just had was amazing and at least this rain will water everything I planted over the weekend. . Did two full days of garden related activities, lots of potting on and a mammoth seed sowing session yesterday (chard, pumpkins, squash, beans, mangetout, more sunflowers and lots of different annual and perennial flowers which I can’t remember all the names of). . A few days ago, I took a little time off and headed over to Homeacres. There, I got to spend a morning with garden legend @charles_dowding. It was a real privilege to be given a one-to-one tour of this very special growing space.🌱 As the sun shined, we talked gardening, compost, no dig, slow worms, soil, and many other garden-related topics. My mind was richly rewarded with knowledge and exciting conversation. And if that wasn't enough, I was given a bundle of fresh asparagus to enjoy... and boy, did we!🌞 From day one, my kitchen garden has been a no dig space. Five years on since its build, I can honestly say it was the best gardening decision I made. The growing rewards have been incredible, the soil is bristling with health, and the whole area is buzzing with life.🐝 As a gardener, you never stop learning. It feels so good to be filling the allotment up with all the plant babies 🌱 So far, from seed, I have planted out 🌱mangetout, broad beans, onions, Barlotti beans, French climbing beans, purple cauliflowers, squashkin, Turks turban squash, carrots, parsnips, cucumbers and a luffa 🌻Calendaulas, Ammi, sweet peas, Californian poppies and nasturtiums There’s a few more seedlings in the greenhouse at home, cosmos, sunflowers, tomatoes, summer psb, and spares of some of the above. I’m actually pleased it’s due to rain, as it will help to settle the plant babies into their new positions. Who needs a path! In my attempt to be better at using space I've decided to transplant spring cabbages in the middle of the path in my greenhouse. My thinking is that while the tomato plants are still small I'm hoping I'll get to harvest some cabbage... This might backfire! I've even decided to put multisown radish between the cabbages, in case they were feeling too roomy. The path is quite compacted, as expected, so it's good that they seem happy enough, although brassicas usually are in compacted ground... apparently! Difference between pic 1 and 2 is a week. Pic 3, just after covering the path with horse manure before transplanting the cabbages in. Pic 4 is from 1st April when I'd covered each bed with its mulch of very well rotted horse manure. Pic 5 and 6 is the difference of the week again. Grow Your Own Garlic 🧄🌱 Garlic is such an easy plant to grow and save seed from, and now is a great time to plant it. First things first, can you plant store bought garlic? Technically yes, but they can carry disease and are often sprayed with anti-sprouting agents. Buying a planting variety from a trusted source, should mean it’s disease free and you can choose a variety that has been bred for your climate. There are two main types of garlic, soft neck and hard neck. The neck refers to the stalk that grows upward from the garlic bulb. Hard-neck varieties are generally better for cooler climates, there are far more varieties than soft neck but they produce less cloves. They have a stalk that stems from the center of the bulb and turns quite rigid at maturity and they also produce flowering stems known as scapes. Soft-neck varieties are better suited to warmer climates, they generally produce more cloves per bulb and are the varieties you’d likely find in supermarkets as they store for longer. They don’t produce scapes and have more leaves than stalk. I plant both, usually soft neck inside the poly tunnels and hard neck outside due to their hardiness. I just break up the bulbs into separate cloves and plant the large ones with the fat end downwards and the pointy end around 2.5cm below the soil surface and around 5inches apart. The cloves can easily be sown directly in a raised bed, pot or container. But I generally sow them directly into the ground and mulch with compost. 8-9 months later you’ll have an abundance of fresh garlic! Remove the scapes when they form if growing hard neck to ensure larger bulbs and harvest from around July onwards, once the top growth has begun to die back. When’s a 🍐 Ripe and Ready to Harvest? 🤔 Unlike most fruits, Pears don’t actually ripen successfully on the tree. They’re best picked once they’ve reached their full size, but before they begin to ripen. They can be left on the tree to ripen, but will often develop an unpleasant texture. But how do you know when they are ripening? Pears ripen from the inside out, so you can’t easily judge their ripeness by looking at the skin. But an easy way to test if a pear is ripe, is to just gently squeeze near the stem end. If it gives slightly, it’s likely ready to be eaten. To speed up the ripening process once picked, I just pop them in a paper bag for a couple of days. The bag will capture ethylene, most ripening fruits produce ethylene which converts starch to sugar, and causes the fruit to soften. First plants and seedlings planted out at our no-dig allotment....and what a beautiful sunny evening for a spot of gardening 🌞 Inside the mini greenhouse are tomato 🍅 chilli 🌶 and sweet pepper seedlings 🌱 🪻I've made a herb patch with lavender, rosemary, coriander, and thyme plants that we bought, and lemongrass I grew from seed 🌱 I planted out my vegetable seedlings that I also grew from seed, including rainbow chard, beetroot, spring onions, and turnips! They aren't too strong as they have become a bit leggy looking for light at home. BIGGEST Crown Prince Squash I’ve ever grow! 👀 ‘Crown Prince’ deserves the name in my opinion, as they are my favourite variety of winter squash and are generally just a great all rounder! They have a smooth, silvery-grey skin that contrasts with its bright orange flesh. They have a sweet, nutty taste and a creamy texture that makes them excellent for roasting or adding to soups and stews. Fruits usually grow to around 3-4kg in weight, but this one is well over double, or around the weight of 1 small dog! U p d a t e 12 mei Foto: ● 1 & 2: komkommer (2 stuks v.d. 4 al in de grond) Snack en gewone komkommer. Aan een 180cm geknutseld rek met materiaal wat ik nog had liggen. Dekentje van stro en vliesdoek tegen vogels. ● 3: pastinaken zo'n 30 stuks opgekomen op ruggen onder vliesdoek bij de worteltjes. ● 4: courgette in een open bloempot gezet met veel mest en laagje stro. En ook weer een kraag tegen duiven.. De andere courgettezaden rechtstreeks in de grond gezaaid en komt dus later op (hoop ik). Wil 2 courgetteplanten hebben staan, =genoeg;) ● 5: Aardappelen zijn allemaal boven gekomen, voorzien van stro als mulchlaag. ● 6: Andijvie en kropsla in de groei. Kweek ze op in een kweekbak. ● 7: Stro onder de aardbeitjes gedaan. Verder: - Alvast wat bonen gezaait om de stok (ik zaai ze niet voor). - Kolen doen het goed. - Bietjes komen op, niet groots.. ong. de helft van wat ik gezaaid had is te zien. Getting the pea supports ready for planting! 🫛 I've sown peas direct at the bottom of these canes, as my first round of peas never germinated (or, more likely a 🐁 or 🐌 ate them for tea!). Hakuai Salad Turnips are back this week!! Our recipe of the week on our blog features these delicious buttery vegetables that are amazing mashed like potatoes, even zoodled (we call them Toodles), dipped in your favorite sauce, or even eaten raw like an apple (most kid approved method). How do YOU eat Salad Turnips?? . Turnip Salad with Yogurt Poppy Seed Dressing 1 bunch Hakurai Salad Turnips ½ bag of fresh mixed baby Greens and leafy herbs of choice (OR use the Turnip Greens!) 1 Lemon ½ tsp Chili Flakes Salt and Pepper ½ cup Plain Yogurt 4 Green Onions Olive Oil ¼ cup Poppy Seeds Optional: slice your favorite pear and add it too, or even apple goes well in this salad! Use a mandoline, or chop very thinly, to slice the Turnips. Soak slices in ice water for twenty minutes, then drain. Chop all your greens and add them to a bowl with lemon juice, chili flakes, ½ tsp salt, black pepper, and toss. Add the yogurt and toss again. Add the scallions, ¼ cup olive oil, and turnips, toss again and serve with poppy seeds sprinkled on top. This dish can change flavor depending on your choice of baby greens and herbs. Cilantro, mint, parsley, and chives can all add a different twist to a delish veggie side!

My lovely raised beds 🥹 I am so happy with them! My dad and Matthew helped me build the frames, and my mum was on cardboard/cellotape duty! A real family effort 🥰 This area is like my dreams coming to reality, I’ve got a greenhouse packed with plants and now I finally have somewhere for them to go. I just need to fill them 🥲 I’ve got some leftover topsoil which I’m planning on using on top of cardboard. I’ve used damp membrane plastic on the sides to protect the wood and also as the woods treated it will stop any chemical leech. I’ve kept the bottoms open however as I’d like the plants to have the option of as much root space as they need. The access to this corner isn’t great…so I’m going to bite the bullet and order 50L bags of compost for ease. I’ve also got some rose cuttings that I’ll be adding, and anything to bulk them out basically. I höstas var vi sååå utarbetade och trötta på allt vad odling hette. Hela tiden var det något som MÅSTE göras både med odlingar och med gård, hus, djur, bilar, mm. Fanns ingen tid till återhämtning och att umgås som familj och det kändes inte roligt längre. Maken blev dessutom utbränd och har kämpat med det hela vintern. Så under vintern kom vi fram till att vi nog ska skippa att odla för självförsörjning för tillfället iaf. Vi ska istället fokusera på att gör det vi tycker är kul och inte betungande tex göra fint på tomten, fixa så vi har ordning överallt, bygga möbler, mm. Tillsammans som familj och inte var och en på varsitt håll. Därför kör vi nu köksträdgård 2.0! Ett nedskalat trädgårdsland där vi fokuserar på basgrönsaker och lite färska salladsgrönsaker. Vi har täckt med markduk i gångarna, fyllt m flis och ska köra täckodling och NO dig. Allt för att det ska bli minimalt med jobb. Just nu är det mycket jobb men det känns bara roligt och vi ser fram emot en liite lugnare och mer kontrollerad odlingssommar än tidigare år. 😊 Kul! #köksträdgård #nodig #täckodling #trädgårdsland #livetpålandet #odling #lantliv

What glorious weather! 🌞 This Saturday was absolutely beautiful - finally! 🥳 We spent the morning wandering a local woodland & foraging more wild garlic, probably our last forage of the season. We then used the wild garlic to make lots of tasty dishes! 👩🏼🍳 Sunday was dedicated to the plot. I'll admit we haven't spent much time there lately. Between being sick, away & other commitments, the plot has taken a back seat in recent weeks. So, it was nice to spend the day prepping beds and starting to tackle the much needed weeding. De tomaten staan amper 3 dagen in de kas en tuin of je kunt het verschil qua groei al zien! In de kas in de grond verrijkt met potgrond, eierschalen, houtas. Daarnaast een extra gift aan wormenmest en lavameel van @wormenkwekerijwasse.nl De wormencompost zorgt voor extra voedingstof en verrijking van de grond, houtas en eierschalen geven extra mineralen. Lavameel ook, van vulkanisch gesteente, maar zorgt ook voor goede afrijping van de vrucht en opname van andere meststoffen. Een beetje vernevelen over het blad houdt de gevreesde tomatenziekte op afstand. Totaal ruim 70 tomaten uitgeplant en nog 10 op voorraad... In de kas gaan we ze weer langs touwen leiden en buiten langs een bamboestok. In het groeiseizoen ga ik ze om de 4 weken bijmesten en zodra de vruchten zijn gezet stop ik om overbemesting te voorkomen. We have officially broken ground today with our @uearthproject Farm alongside @vegvancommunityfarmcic Well not broken ground as this is a no dig site and we are using permaculture principles. What a learninf curve its been so far but im so greatful for our wonderful volunteers, sponsors and partner organisations that are supporting this movement. We have started sith the idea to feed 40,000 children in Leicester. We have a long way to go but this is a great start 💚💚💚💚💚

Mischkultur in meinen großen Kübeln im Gewächshaus: vorgestern gepflanzt. So dicht war es noch nie. Hatte sich aber im Herbst bei Kohl und Begleitern bewährt. Zu sehen ist der Kübel mit den Zuckermelonen. Die anderen sind mit Gurken bepflanzt. Bei allen in etwa das gleiche noch mit drinnen: 🔖 Tomaten 🔖 Petersilie 🔖 Basilikum 🔖 Küchenzwiebel für Zwiebelgrün 🔖 Kurkuma 🔖 Ingwer 🔖 Süßkartoffeln (schlecht bewurzelte Stecklinge, da hatte ich neulich nen Beitrag zu) Bei einigen Gurkenkübeln werden noch Lima-, Spaghetti- und Helmbohnen und sowie Mexikanische Minigurke gesteckt. We’ve been away over the weekend but came home this afternoon via the garden centre - never know how the car ends up in there! 🤔😁 Bought some compost and added to the beds.
