Afgelopen week hebben we een bezoek gebracht aan het terrein dat ter beschikking wordt gesteld ten behoeve van de aanleg van het Vruchtenbos voor Kindertehuizen 🌱 We streven ernaar deze maand nog het Vruchtenbos aan te leggen. Het wordt nog mooier: Er is een tweede perceel ter beschikking gesteld. Op verzoek van het kindertehuis zullen we ook daar ondersteuning bieden en er een Bacoven en Bananen Bos van maken. Ennnn .. Samen met de jongeren van JCI zullen wij bij het tehuis zelf een moestuin aanleggen, naast de tuinbakken waar zij voornamelijk tayerblad in planten. Wanneer dit allemaal lukt dan is dit kindertehuis niet alleen zelfvoorzienend maar kan het via de twee Vruchtenbossen dus ook andere kids van vers fruit voorzien 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 Dit project is een initiatief van mij als Forest93 Ambassador en dat zal ik natuurlijk met support van @forest93suriname en het Ministerie van Landbouw, Visserij en Veeteelt uitvoeren. KAZUKI KITAOKA - GLOBAL COORDINATOR, WORLD FOOD FORUM Kazuki Kitaoka is Head of the Outreach, Marketing and Reporting Unit at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Prior to joining FAO, he led for several years the Strategic Planning and Coordination Unit at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and managed various global consultations and outreach activities, including those of the UN Development Group on “Engagement with the Private Sector” as part of the multi-stakeholder dialogue towards the establishment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He joined the UN system in 2003 for the implementation of private sector development, industrial technology, and corporate responsibility programmes in various countries, including China, Indonesia, Nigeria, and the United Republic of Tanzania. In his subsequent roles as strategic planner, programme manager and chief of donor relations, he worked on organizational policies and publications related to sustainability, growth, poverty reduction, gender equality, development effectiveness, the changing role of middle-income countries in globalization, and the global development and aid architecture. In 2023, the Global Hunger Index scored Tanzania # 94 out of 125 countries measured. This means Tanzania has a level of hunger which is serious. In the Majengo village, hunger becomes especially problematic when there is a lack of rain and when rainfall is unpredictable. During the year, we distribute food packs to families in need as often as possible. Last year we distributed 250 food packs in the community. Last week, I had the privilege of participating in the National Consultation on Small Rivers, held from May 10-11, 2024, in Khajuraho. The consultation was specifically dedicated to discussing the rejuvenation of small rivers for climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience, highlighting the profound connection between water and climate. I was honored to present my experiences with the Pawana River Yatra and our team's efforts in climate action through youth advocacy in Pune. I am grateful to Sanjay Sinh ji for providing me with the opportunity to share our work on this esteemed platform. It was a remarkable experience to share the stage with distinguished personalities like IAS Kajol Singh, renowned scientist Dr. Indira Khurana, and many other water and climate experts, alongside the revered 'Waterman of India,' Dr. Rajendra Singh. The consultation culminated in a powerful declaration, recognizing the crucial role of small rivers in ecosystem rejuvenation, water and food security, dignified livelihoods, and equitable socioeconomic growth. The declaration emphasized the need for community-led initiatives in small river rejuvenation as a key to climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience. The declaration outlined commitments to serve as decentralized centers of small river rejuvenation through various actions, including awareness-building, research, documentation, and incorporating 'jal vidya' (water education) into educational curricula at all levels. Additionally, it called for organizing river yatras (journeys) and workshops to engage stakeholders, media, and policymakers. Meet Susan! While she was watching the rise in food insecurity in Canada, particularly in her community, she was ready to take action and decided to sign up for a shift. Since joining us in October 2022, Susan has volunteered well over 150 hours and has become a major asset to our food packing team. Susan helps set up before shifts and assists with extra cleaning when needed and she is always friendly and welcoming with all of the other volunteers. She even recruited her husband to volunteer his time repairing some of our packing equipment to help us save on costs so we can help more people in need. Susan has made some great friends volunteering at GlobalMedic and the sense of community being fostered at our Oakville location keeps her coming back. Caught up with our local farmers at the reception for the swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday. They have been working hard to coordinate and supply the orders for the caterer and hawkers in preparation for the event. The reception brought together local farmers, hawkers and chefs. Together, they presented a delicious spread of dishes incorporating local produce to keep the bellies of our over 700 guests happy and satisfied. The farm-to-table menu that evening was not only fresh and nutritious, it was more sustainable too. Unlike imports, local produce incurs fewer transport miles, making it more environmentally friendly. Heartened to see the collaboration across our agri-food ecosystem to incorporate our local produce into the evening’s menu. It made the momentous occasion even more memorable. I hope that our community will continue to give our local farms the support and confidence that they will need to build greater capability and capacity towards Singapore's “30-by-30” vision, and build a more resilient food future for Singapore. #FoodSecurity #LocalProduce #SupportLocal
