We live on a hill. That’s a gardening challenge. We don’t have many spots of full sun. That’s a major gardening challenge! So the veggie garden is tucked in the one area of full sun in our yard. Crammed in this space, truth be told. I’d love to have a larger vegetable garden with lots of space, and pretty fencing, and a greenhouse and flowers packed all around… But that’s just not possible. Creating some “pretty spots” helps me tamp down that desire of having something more. Realistically, I know that even if I had the space of my dreams, there would be a challenge. Most people probably would not be so excited to see their onion plants forming flowers but as this is the second year they are in the ground and nothing is happening on that end. This is my second year growing garlic. The first year my crop was wiped out by allium leaf miner, this year I covered my crop. Most of it’s still growing but I noticed one smaller stalk had collapsed so I dug it up. I was expecting that sort of onion like structure I’ve seen with immature garlic but to my surprise, 4 cloves instead. Not huge but still. A good sign given how much larger most of the other stalks are. Yesterday @josieburt1 cut the grass so I used some of the clippings to mulch the blueberry bed and the jostaberry/blackcurrant bed. If you remember, we used grass clippings to mulch the polytunnel and it’s doing a great job. As long as it’s not too thick it won’t go sludgy and boggy. It definitely keeps moisture in and slowly seeps nutrients into the soil as it rots down and the worms slowly pull it down into the soil. Of course, it also will help to keep weeds down although it doesn’t stop bind weed or thistles - they just push right through - but I have found them easier to pull! The only caveat to all of this is that you can only do this if you don’t treat your lawn with chemicals. Back to those currant bushes - the sawfly larvae are still busy destroying them but I’m hoping very much that the next generation will right now be under attack by nematodes. I may buy some more just for good luck. Finally sorting out raised bed. This is a reclaimed plant table from an old garden centre. Originally we were going to use it as a potting table but we turned it over and cut legs off voila a raised bed. Now lined, and the slow process of filling it without the expense of bags of compost! I think my new metal raised beds are complete. I have been putting off installing a new drip system in it, but it's starting to get warm and there is no more rain in the 10 day forecast... so I need to put drip irrigation so I don't have to hand water this 4x12 foot bed. Took me a while, since my fingers, hands and arms where sore from pulling Vincas the day before. Now I can put mulch down in the bed and get that soil covered, since I got the drip lines in. Barring anything going wrong this should be a great garden harvest year for me *Knocks on wood and fingers crossed* Last year I had beautiful cabbages and other plants then I somehow got aphids in the house. None of my houseplants were ever affected so I don’t know where they came from. By the time I noticed them they’d done some real damage to my vegetable plants. Only two cabbages survived. Today was the first day of hardening off my cold hardy plants. Next week is supposed to be in the 60’s with lows in the 40’s at night! If all goes well I plan to plant them out next weekend. Back at it...Year 5 of Vegetable Gardening! 🥬 Finally, I put some stuff in the ground today and honestly, it felt good. Really good. 🥬 I'm not one to emotionally download on my vegetable garden Instagram, but when I was gardening, I was completely focused on transplanting these lettuce starters and not anything else. 🥬 By the time I was back indoors, my mood had completely changed, my spirits were lifted, and the lethargy of the morning was gone. 🥬 While I'm not gonna say all my problems were solved by a short period of gardening, it still amazes just how beneficial it is and how much better I feel after a bit of time with my hands in the dirt. 🥬 My pandemic 'get outside so you don't become one with the couch' hobby is such a blessing and a boost to my overall well-being. I am still waiting for my tiller parts to be delivered so instead we worked on a few big projects this weekend. Weekend project #1: expand the garden for more raised beds, combine the fence line around the garden and orchard, and put a landscaping cloth border under the fence line. I’ve decided gardening in raised beds is my preferred method since it’s much easier to weed and amend the soil, but I still need some in ground space for things like garlic, corn, potatoes, and beans. So we added another ~25 x 70 feet off to the side for raised beds. This also brought the garden into the orchard space so we combined the fence line of the two areas and made it one large space. Finally, something we have struggled with for years was the weeds growing along the fence line, so we took down the entire fence and added a landscaping fabric border to flank both sides of the fence line. The old fence was completely overgrown with weeds and blackberry brambles that were growing out of control and invading the growing space because we couldn’t easily trim to the fence. Now we can mow and trim the edges without ruining the fence. What do you do on rainy days, like the ones we’ve been having and likely to get more off? I finally bit the bullet and I cut out a toile for the top part of the cargo pants I want to make to check fit and then went ahead and cut out the whole pattern from the plain fabric I’ve got. Once I have finished those then I want to make another pair with this gorgeous patterned fabric so I’m taking it one step at a time I cut them out yesterday, and today I have tailor tacked all the markings that I need to. In between this activity I am knitting and tidying my craft/sewing room. Today I sowed seeds of lettuce, pak choi, peas and onions on the back veranda has it’s under cover and therefore protected. Yesterday during a dry spell I ducked out and planted seedlings of broccoli, collard greens and fennel that I showed a couple of weeks ago into my raised beds. Plus a few potatoes that are sprouting. I decided I would let Mother Nature water them in for me which she did just as I came into the house.
