Buckets of big beautiful blooms 🤗 Some more tips I love for growing dahlias include: 1. Use raised garden beds if possible, or ensure you have good draining soil 2. Start with the soil. Add lots of aged manure and organic matter, checking your soil PH (easy test kits are reasonable online or available in some garden centres/ hardware stores) for what amendments you may need specifically for your soil. 3. Pinch plants at 3-4 sets of leaves (take top off) to promote branching and hence more blooms. This also helps the plant not just grow one main huge stem. 4. You don’t have to lift your dahlia tubers every winter. If the ground doesn’t get too freezing you can cover with mulch and they’ll have any early start on the next season. You may also like to leave them over winter and dig up and replant in spring. The reasons to do this include: you won’t have to worry about storing them over winter; you’ll have more tubers to re-plant and share; and you’ll help the plant not get too much of a huge and tangled root clump if this dividing is done at least ever second year. I feel like a little kid at Christmas this week. Mother Nature is finally drying out and warmer temperatures are on their way this weekend in the PNW… and that only means one thing… it’s dahlia time! All I want for Mother’s Day is to plant my dahlia tubers! I’ll be spending the next couple days tidying up our growing space to prepare to plant on Saturday and Sunday. My goal this weekend is to get all of my 1st year seedlings and known varieties planted out in the field. I’m going to wait at least another week before I put my 2024 seedlings out in the field. I’ve started hardening them off, but they’re not quite ready to plant. I typically will plant out my seedlings and cuttings around the same time that I plant out my tomatoes and other sensitive vegetables. What about you? What are your plans this Mother’s Day weekend? I recently took my boys to Barcelona so we could take Spanish classes and see the city for the first time. It was such an incredible trip, we fell in love with the city and its people who were as warm as you would expect (very warm), totally delighted and supportive that we were practicing our Spanish. We ended up doing a number of tourist stops one of which was to the Picasso museum. I can’t encourage you enough to please go to this. Here you see a picture of some of his hand drawn sketches. Aprila Pilieni ❤️ The first photo was taken yesterday afternoon. The second one was taken very early Saturday morning when the rain arrived. I don't think it has ever happened that my blooming dahlias experienced rain in the past. It is a normal occurrence for many growers. Here in Ca it never rains during Dahlia season. The rain usually arrives here the last week of November when dahlias are already trimmed to the ground and stay till March. This year we were so nicely surprised by the intense (out of nowhere) downpour for one single day. Now we are back to spring weather with temperatures over 80F. I can spot some buds on my tuber planted dahlias. Dahlia Planting Rules 1. Make sure there’s absolutely no choice of frost. 2. Soil needs to be at least 55 degrees. 3. If in doubt wait to plant. A tuber planted in warm, dry soil grows faster & healthier than ones planted in cold, wet soil. 4. Soil must not be soggy - it would be perfect if there’s been no rain for a couple of days. 5. Do not water after you plant your tubers - wet tubers rot! 6. Don’t worry if you break off a sprout. Tubers that have made a sprout WILL grow another. 7. Different cultivars make different size tubers, do not think the fatter the tuber the better. 8. Small tubers are not weaker tubers. 9. Once tubers sprout you can start watering. Not before 10. Pinch. Pinch. Pinch. 11. If your plants are going into a crowded garden start them in pots just large enough to hold the tuber long enough for you to pinch at least twice. 12.
