Me at the c. 1745 Belair Mansion in Bowie, MD with an arm full of new baby plants and a bottle of local honey by @stormy_acres_bee_farm in my pocket. The annual plant sale is an event sponsored by the Bowie-Crofton Garden Club. I watched as my younger son had way too much fun rolling down the hill of its main lawn and other kids laughed and played. It made me think of a session during last year’s Descendants Lab about the reclamation of spaces. Closed this morning to go on a buying trip! Opening tomorrow 11:30-4pm and by appointment. If you’re out shopping for yourself or your loved one this weekend, remember to keep an eye on garden safety. Here are some common peony concerns— All tools can spread all of these! Drag that lysol spray with you as you harvest, prune, dig, and plant! Water just 1x per week and water deeply. Leaf curl: water borne, crusty rolled leaves. Avoid planting your peonies too close, especially when newly purchased. Water without ponding or splashing as even water droplets spread this one! Discard any plants and soil if found. Do not replant a peony in that spot. Harlequin/mosaic diseases- Nematodes (soil-borne). Rattlesnake is the most well-known, but there are many. Watch for light green splotching on the leaves, discolored circles and patterns. Remove and discard as much soil from your peony before planting in your garden. Plant with a bio-fumigant (like mustard!). Discard any affected plants and soil if found. Do not replant a peony in that spot. Gall - This is very prevalent on Dahlias right now and can spread to your peonies in a multitude of ways. Isolate any plants with abnormal root or eye/shoot growth. Botrytis - This common disease won’t show much this year as we have had such a dry spring! Trim peony stems in fall and use them in wreathes for amazing color or discard! Add mustard or another bio fumigant to prevent, avoid top watering and night watering. Discard affected leaves, but keep plant unless it becomes significant. Bud blast- tiny buds never forming? Turning brown? This could be any number of things, but it’s possible your peony just needs time! Discard affected buds, but if the problem continues over multiple seasons, trouble shoot for other causes. Nande and Carol attended the Lindbergh Elementary School’s Family STEM Night! It was wonderful to connect with families and to share what we do at Highland Youth Garden. Nande created a ‘Space’ Lemonade to match their space theme. This lemonade was made with violets. The combination of the acidity from the lemon juice and the pH levels of the violet tea made a beautiful magenta pink lemonade. The vibrant magenta pink lemonade definitely caught the attention of everyone at the event. Nande's creative twist with the 'Space' Lemonade was a big hit, sparking curiosity and delight among the attendees. As families sipped on the refreshing drink, they marveled at the unique flavor combination and the stunning color that the vislets imparted. The event buzzed with energy as children and adults alike bonded over this innovative beverage, making it a memorable highlight of the evening.
