Happy Birthday on August 20th to father and son Eliel (1873-1950) and Eero (1910-1961) Saarinen, iconic Finnish-American architects who shared a birthday and a profession. They were great architects who lived and worked in Michigan. Eliel was a Cranbrook architect and taught at the University of Michigan and worked with his son Eero as partners at the Saarinen and Associated architectural firm. Together they designed many notable buildings including the Fenton Community Center, two blocks from where I lived when Charles and I first met. This building completed in 1938, had a unique bricking style on the exterior, Art Deco lion water spouts and a unique fireplace. Charles and I took many walks there to enjoy the building and picturesque surrounding landscape.
