Gas Works Park in Seattle, Washington includes the only remnants of a coal gasification plant in the United States. The Seattle Gas Light Company operated the plant from 1906 to 1956, making gas first from coal and then from oil. The gas was used by Seattleites for lighting, cooking, and heating. Production ended when the city switched to natural gas. The park opened to the public in 1975 and underwent cleanup and landscaping. The park’s 20 acres are on the north shore of Lake Union, and are popular with picnickers, joggers, and kite flyers. It has won many awards for its design that celebrates a seemingly hopeless and obsolete industrial installation. Tar occasionally still oozes from the ground in some locations and is removed by the city. On this fine day, all robots were safe from tar and rain alike.

During a very dark winter day I went for a hike on one of my favorite trails. I looked up to see a red tail hawk riding the wind. Immediately 10 bluebirds seem to drop from the sky. Monacha cantiana - Kentish Snail Last month I revisited @monktonreserve to recce my sculpture site. As I sat on the bench at Turtle Dove Point I looked down at my feet- I’m well practiced in that department as a beach comber. There were an escargatoire of snails scattering of empty shells. How thrilled I was to find them. My mind whirled as I reimagined their calcium carbonate shells embodied in the once upon a time chalk cliff now a hollowed quarry. Isn’t it an amazing coincidence that part of their Latin name shares my Móna (moon) woven set of sculptures. And another fun fact, a collective name for snails is a rout or walk. I will be touring the @monktonsculpturetrail on Saturday with friends and walking the walk at a snails pace. Construct, 2024, ~46.5” x ~30.5” x 2”, Acrylic and Found Objects on Found Wood ➡️ This one was constructed over a slow period in the background of many other projects. I had plenty of going on to keep me busy, but one day I found this baby crib for free on offer up and the ornate wood design was too good to pass up. So that day I picked it up and started to think what to use it for. I had some ideas to build a table, but eventually I ended up just using one of the front pieces as a sort of frame for a painting. I wanted the center square to feel like it was almost floating, so I constructed this wacky way for it to grip the “ribs” of the crib in the back (I’ll see if I have any photos). Make it feel almost like a modular piece you could pop off. After I was finished with the painting, I later kept adding on found objects as a way to build out the assemblage aspect of the piece that hadn’t fully taken form yet. At the time, I got some good insight from professors, as well as a battle I was having in my own head of the pros and cons to making an artwork that was cluttered vs. controlled. I always want to seem to remind myself that I can make something that isn’t just art vomit but rather a curated composition. After finding various parts in random piles in different places, the piece was finally finished in time for my Thesis show. ➡️ P.S.
