This is the first exhibition of environmental art per se at a major British museum and it is superb! Ken Paranada is a force of nature and that pun was not intended but no expression could capture his energy or passion better! Repost from eafestivaluk Sediment Spirit, the first exhibition curated by EA Sustain 2024 speaker and the UK’s first climate curator, John Kenneth Paranada, opened on Monday and features an impactful selection of works that cut across different genres, from traditional painting (Anj Smith) to video games (Henry Driver). One of the most visually stunning artworks in Ken’s jewel-like assemblage is Coalescence by Paul Cocksedge, a sculptural installation of anthracite coal ominously suspended over a Giacometti sculpture (part of the Sainsbury's permanent collection). The quantum of coal in that artwork represents the amount required to power a single 40 watt lightbulb for a year, a fact that staggered, then inspired, Paul to create the artwork. I made this creation really quickly on my way back to the car, where my husband Harald and doggy Mara were waiting for me so patiently while I was exploring and creating the stone circle that I posted before. I had seen the yellow sand and the white cliff tops when I was heading to the beach. It stayed in my thoughts, so when I walked back, I filled an empty plastic bottle that I found on the beach with sand from the sandy cliff trail and brought it a bit further, where the ground is white and more solid. I quickly made this spiral and took a few pics... Since then I want to return and play more with these two colors... But it's an one hour drive to get there, so I dont know if I will make it while we are here, enjoying our last 10 days in Portugal... Do you enjoy a really juicy conversation friends? Even if you’re only listening to it? I do! I especially love listening to artists having conversations, or artist interviews. Even if the artist does something completely different than what I do. Always something new to learn and discover! That’s why I enjoy listening to podcasts as I work in the studio. A lot of the work that happens after the design stage is done, is the kind of work that my hands can do all by themselves. Ok not really, but as I am working I can easily be listening and not be distracted from the work. During the month of April aka Earth Month, a fellow repurposing artist asked if I would be interested in having a live conversation on Instagram about our respective art practices. Of course I said yes! Little did I know what can of worms would open up that day... That conversation was so much fun that I immediately asked several other artists if they would like to chat as well. They agreed and fun conversations ensued. Within days, after securing permissions from my fellow artists, I figured out how to publish podcasts and poof! they’re out there for your enjoyment! I am a quick start like that, when I get a good bee in my bonnet! I named the podcast SALVAGE, since that’s what I and all the artists who I’m chatting with do - we salvage and repurpose materials otherwise destined for the landfill. Comino’s fate hangs in a liminal space between the interests of big business - riddled with corruption and fuelled only by greed - and the island’s desperate cry to regain its dignity. The island’s early 20th century history, as a close-knit farming community was radically disrupted with the arrival of the hotel in the 1960s. Over the decades, the intensification of tourism has only worsened. Businesses continue to push the limits, only to be reprimanded by activist groups and select individuals who have become custodians of the island in lieu of proper governance. The exhibition brings together the works of Joanna Demarco, Lisa Attard, Inigo Taylor, Mario Asef, Sheldon Saliba which are complemented by an excerpt of text written by Daphne Caruana Galizia. I am so happy to be on this shortlist with 4 images from my new series Arborea. Photographers and filmmakers from across the globe entered their work in EARTH PHOTO 2024, the international open call and exhibition for images that tell compelling stories about our planet. Out of over 1900 entries, a judging panel made up of experts from the fields of photography, film, geography and environment selected the shortlist: 112 images and 13 videos by 31 photographers and 13 filmmakers around the world. All shortlisted images are now available to view on the Earth Photo website (link in bio). Congratulations to everyone – there are some truly stunning images! My project involves exploring Exmoor’s temperate rainforest, gathering fallen lichens and soaking them in crystal growing fluids. It’s an artistic experiment that shows how human activities are changing the natural world. 1/2 This post from Flickr contains lots of memories. Cassie the cat mentioned below is no longer with us, nor do I live near where she did. I don't share my life with a cat anymore and I miss them. I no longer drink alcohol and I don't know whether Heather from Flickr still works there. Flickr is where it all began for me, posting things and receiving some attention, as a feature made it to the front page of flickr on their blog and in those days Flickr was one of the main places people posted their pics. Reading this back I appeared to be more jolly in those days, I think my existence was more carefree and also more angst ridden in equal parts. These days I try to live with less distractions and therefore my intensity is probably more on display writing here than my sense of humour. But we are all works in progress and I guess I've changed over the last thirteen years. An art career, depression, competing in cycle events, meeting new people from all over the world and much soul searching have been the themes. But they've lead me to where I am now and I wouldn't change it. When you get to hoover up the cobwebs in the back of the cupboard and the back panel falls off its hinges into Narnia then really life and all its phantasmagorical wonder in each moment, is all I need for nourishment. #TBT From my blog June 2011 "It's been very hot and sunny today. Blue skies, humidity and thirsty gardens. This week I've been looking after a neighbour's cat. She's a funny little character with comedy whiskers, a squeak for a miaow, a bum wiggle as she trots along and a propensity to sit legs akimbo licking her wotsits (that's the cat not her owner). I am very fond of Cassie and I look forward to her owner going away so I can spend some time with her. My cat, however, isn't so keen (cue disdainful look from my moggy). Once I'd finished work and went over the road to give her some grub and I noticed the garden was looking a little dry so I gave it all a much needed drink. Talking of which I've just realised I don't have any beers in the fridge and I could murder a cold one. Cold blooded murder in the first degree, mmmmmmmmmmm yes please. Continues...

TRYING SOMETHING NEW - a digital artwork Because my art focus is now on Doodlewear designs, and monochromatic digital designs works so well, I thought I would work on developing some designs along those lines. I tried digital art about 15 years ago, but really didn't enjoy it much; however, this time, apart from some niggly software issues, I did have a lot of fun. The photos show the paper-based sketch on which the digital design is based. The reference photos for this artwork were from Pixabay (Patrizia08). My latest printed publication focuses on the environmental landscape and explores sustainability in art production. Recent direction engages the natural environment suggesting collaboration as a path forward to live a sustainable future on Earth. Themes of impermanence and reuse are reflected. The publication shows the shifting nature of my work, the evolution and journey the circle takes. Starting with retrospective works from the past 2 decades, including recent artworks from my exhibitions CIRCLE and CIRCLE CULTURE, the fluid loop motif expands from beyond the canvas and directly with the natural environment, becoming the new backdrop. These environmental interventions thereby become expanded paintings; through facilitating and recording elemental and ephemeral happenings. “Equal Opposite Reaction” Glass, yarn back with my second big piece from the past semester! this piece references the salt flats of the Lithium Triangle in South America, and the extractive processes currently taking place in the region. Shoutout to the incredible students in the Spring 2024 Art and Ecology class! 🔥 These are photos from two combined projects, ‘Embodiment/Hybrid Bodies’ and ‘Knowledge Systems: Worlds, Views.’ Together, these two projects were a poetic attempt to estrange ourselves from the human body and consider the world from the embodied lens of another being. By photographing these projects at @kunaturalhistory, we hoped to complicate the truth value and neutrality of scientific paradigms and institutions. The last weeks of this course were such a gift! On our last class day, we watched a lecture by Fernando Dominguez Rubio on “museums as machines for reproducing sameness.” 🔥 We talked about museum collection and conservation practices as ways of negating the chemical and physical processes that all materials are subjected to. I’m so proud of this group. They connected these ideas back to the beginning of this course, and we ended up talking about permanence, hierarchy, and the Great Chain Of Being. I love this statue of Lady of justice it serves as a reminder When my sister’s always would say I should’ve had pursuit law. I mean, sure, at one point, I was kinda intrigued by the idea. You know, fighting for what’s right, standing up for others - it’s like signing up for a full-scale battle against injustice. But man, that mountain to conquer? It’s a steep one.
