Das sechs Jahrzehnte umfassende, transmediale Lebenswerk von Rebecca Horn (geb. 1944, Deutschland) befasst sich mit dem Thema der Existenz und der Verwischung der Grenzen zwischen Natur und Kultur, Technologie und biologischem Kapital sowie dem Menschlichen und Nichtmenschlichen. Ob man die Künstlerin als Erfinderin, Regisseurin, Autorin, Komponistin oder Poetin bezeichnen mag, allem voran versteht sie sich als Choreografin. Horn beschreibt ihre Praxis als präzise kalkulierte Beziehungen von Raum, Licht, Körperlichkeit, Ton und Rhythmus, die ein Ensemble bilden. Maschinenwerdung, Tierwerdung oder Erdwerdung in ihren performativen, skulpturalen und filmischen Arbeiten zielen auf eine von Körpern erfahrbare Präsenz eines sichtbaren, fühlbaren und hörbaren Daseins. Die Ausstellung „Rebecca Horn“ entwickelt eine der Performativität gewidmete Lesart, die von ihren Anfängen bis zu den letzten Arbeiten erlebbar ist. Horn nutzt die Idee von Inkorporierung und schafft Sinnbilder technisch körperlicher Vernetzung seit ihren ersten Papierarbeiten in den 1960er Jahren, den frühen Performances und Filmen der 1970er Jahre über die mechanischen Skulpturen seit den 1980er Jahren und den raumgreifenden Installationen der 1990er Jahre bis heute. “Acquisition:” An Evolving Installation April 5th - June 18th, 2024 The Drive Thru Art Box is a public art space standing in the parking lot of the Green Truck Pub and managed by ARTS SOUTHEAST. I’ve had the privilege to install work that reflects the nature of this unique exhibition space. Acquisition is on view so feel free to stop by and see it in person or follow along as I post progress shots now through June. - My practice focuses on process and material as a wayfinding tool to discover the conceptual underpinning within the art I create. This work honors the importance of the river to the life and spirit of the local community while looking deeply into the status of that relationship. This land where Spiral building stands was once the final hideout of Takano Choei, a Dutch scholar from the late Edo period. And this Chinese character is the last work that led to Choei's imprisonment, "Dream Story." He sharply criticized the shogunate's xenophobic policy towards foreign ships as “Dream Story”, and although he was imprisoned, he escaped. He then lived a life on the run, moving from place to place, burning his face with chemicals, and finally committed suicide when he was nearly captured here. After making the video piece for the event in Cardiff, I was hooked on Super-8. In the next couple of pieces, I continued using my beloved Super-8 camera and my focus shifted towards my former home in Sweden. I did a lot of filming in forests near my family home in Dalarna—I was fascinated by pine trees—but I was also beginning to capture old traditional wooden buildings. In Sweden, the forest is associated with the idea of nation, and in a way the rural buildings too. At the time I hadn’t made the connection yet, but I was playing around with and changing national narratives. The footage I filmed was transferred onto Betacam tape and edited on a linear edit suite (wiiiizzz, clunk, wiiiizzz, clunk) into short loops, then transferred onto VHS tape for the exhibition—with my now trademark fuzziness! I created a single monitor piece shown in a corridor and developing this idea further I made a second three monitor piece—for the degree show—in a staircase and abandoned lift shaft. I remember wanting the viewers to stumble across fragments of forest—in retrospect I realise, my home reconstructed—in the everyday city centre environment—glimmering and nostalgic. Looking back, I think the work was about returns, it articulated something about migration—a migrant’s continuous imaginary returns home. Interestingly, although I wasn’t completely aware of at the time, the piece speaks about loss. The flickering and the jerkiness of the super-8 material and all those transfers after distorted home into something incomplete and unclear. The artwork was commissioned through Fingal County Council’s Public Art Programme Infrastructure where the brief signaled the arrival of the Swords Cultural Quarter and has resulted in a work created with, for and about the people of Fingal. Détresse Humaine - Aufs Neue, 2024 Simone Weil définissait le malheur comme « la vérité de notre condition ». Cette dernière est une combinaison de trois éléments : la douleur, la détresse et la dégradation sociale. En lien avec les archives de l’INA, cette installation propose de questionner la place de cette émotion dans notre condition humaine, mais aussi d’interroger l’importance du numérique dans la conservation de cette détresse. Déséquilibré, debout sur les débris, face à une dure réalité, l’installation rend tangible notre condition par l’expérimentation de la détresse. Un contraste s’opère entre les fondations du propos et la fragilité de l’installation qui oscille au gré du vent.
