I listened to this audiobook this weekend, and WOWWWW. It was gut-wrenching. I have always felt like her dad was the problem, but it was so much more than I even imagined. Her stories about the paparazzi, how the press treated her, and her dealings with the court system were just so sad. The double standard the public had (Britney & JT) was a whole other level, and after it was brought up in the book, I actually remembered some of those instances. This was such a good read, not “good”, but it touched my heart. And my heart hurts for her. BOOK REVIEW 🐴 A STOLEN LIFE🐴 5/5 I have been hoping to thrift this book for a while now, and when I finally found it, I was itching to read Jaycees story. Of course I’m familiar with her life, but I was really interested in reading her own account. Her story is so heavy, and while I didn’t get emotional during my reading, I thought about her so much knowing my down time and even found myself emotional when I was spending time with my son. I’m over twice the age she was when she became a mom and living in polar opposite circumstances and it’s unfathomable what she endured and how she raised her daughters in that environment. Her strength is quite literally unparalleled. Book mail! My own. What’s that cover? I designed it and it does mean something. I discuss a love of book paper in the book, I’ve been around it a lot, too. My dad is still a printer. I’m a printer now! But I’m also a writer. A blank piece of paper is an invitation to all to create: a note, a doodle, make sure a pen works (creating assurance), a work of art, a love letter—origami! Paper is a very simple and accessible “canvas” for all. And a life is a lot like paper. It can come out in many different qualities, from tissue to card stock; I have always identified with raw. Raw paper is fibrous and rough. There’s an ancient quality to it, but it’s still beckoning to be marked, made whole by someone’s impressions pressed into it. Ink will spread in spidery lines along the fibers. Typed upon, those same fibers stick up like frightened hairs. 41 is about reaching an age my mother did not. The raw paper cover a symbol of the blank page before me. Of course, years have passed, I’m 44 for 4 more months. My canvas is filling in. No longer blank, a work in process. (https://insomniacreading.substack.com/p/a-time-of-gifts) Difficulty: 6 Length: 321 pages, paperback Published: 1977 Rating: 4/5 “Meanwhile, further afield, the shift of mountains and plains and rivers and the evidence of enormous movements of races gave me the feeling of traveling across a relief map where the initiative lay wholly with the mineral world. It evicted with drought and ice, beckoned with water and grazing, decoyed with mirages and tilted and shifted populations, like the hundred-and-thousands in a glass-topped balancing game; steering languages, breaking them up into tribes and dialects, assembling civilizations, channelling beliefs, guiding armies and blocking the way for philosophies and styles of art and finally giving them a relenting shove through the steeper passes.” (Page 241) I think that Fermor did a fine job for the premise of the book. I do wonder if he became insecure while writing the novel, worried that he was coming across too unrefined, causing him to overwrite the second half. Overall, this is a good read, if you are struggling to get through it, stop after Fermor starts getting too stuffy, you’ll still gain enjoyment for what this book tries so hard to be, and appreciate that Fermor took on a onerous project and was successful. At bottom, Fermor is reporting on a Europe that no longer exists, a Europe which was torched and massacred six years after this expedition. This book's main trope is asking for help and while doing that accepting it in any form or shape that it comes in, because of a syndrome she calls " I GOT IT" we often want to micromanage everything in life, including the help we get. I love how she tackles, advises and gives practical and clear examples of how real life people and people who we also look up to ( whom are presented as put together, we look at them like that) accepted and still accept support and actually ASK for support, to get where they are. The I GOT IT syndrome is often 'adopted' by not wanting to look incompetent; How date they think I don't have this? Wanting to prove! No one will get it right! She goes on and explains how authentic vulnerability is a sign of strength. Because it is very dangerous for oneself to view vulnerability as a sign of weakness. She's teaching and advising us to learn, understand and use the language of ask with her Mantra and now her podcast SUPPORT IS SEXY. I loved how she kept emphasizing that nothing can evolve on its own, and we all have moments of now knowing. Ask for Support and be ready to accept it, it can even be a paid support (Therapist) But in whatever you do. You do not have to prove anything, it's okay Not to Get it. Growing up in the 1960's, James was treated more like an animal than a child during a time when child abuse was not spoken of and many people looked the other way. A beautiful family on the outside, but no one knew what was going on behind closed doors. He and his siblings suffered tremendous emotional and physical abuse at the hands of a sadistic father and an absent mother. He lost his baby sister at the hands of his father and retains the horrific memories of her death. James lived in a barn for most of his childhood and learned to survive the isolation and neglect. James became a deeply spiritual person, but it was a challenging road. Throughout the years, he has had people in his life that were "bright lights at the end of his tunnel", and he kept moving forward, pushing on. He found that forgiveness was key. James was compelled to write his story to make others aware of chronic toxic stress, domestic violence, and abuse and encourage people to avoid these relationships at all costs. He still suffers from symptoms created so many years ago. James continue to forge ahead with his life, but it was a hard road. Through many defeats, he pushed on with God's help and what he calls a few bright lights at the end of the tunnel of darkness. Since there were no calls today for subbing gigs and classes don’t begin for me again until June 10th, I started in again on Deborah Levy’s “The Cost of Living” . So much truth and wisdom in this deceptively thin book. But I think to truly “get” and appreciate Levy’s message , you must be a person of experience with a gulch filled load of life under your belt. For better or worse, I think at 57 years of age I am that kind of person and why I think “The Cost of Living” resonates deeply. Like when she writes, (on the first page, no less) : “To strip the wallpaper off the fairy tale of The Family House in which the comfort and happiness of men and children have been the priority is to find behind it an unthanked, unloved, neglected, exhausted woman. … it is an act of immense generosity to be the architect of everyone else’s well-being.” Hmmm, little nuggets of that poison la amargura (bitterness) for sure but truth nonetheless. #bookcrone #booksforwomen #thecostofliving #autobiography #memoir

Die Interaktion mit meiner Kundschaft ist für mich besonders wertvoll, da ich dabei nicht nur mein Wissen weitergeben, sondern auch viele interessante Geschichten und Erfahrungen austauschen kann. Mein beruflicher Werdegang umfasst auch eine akademische Ausbildung im Bereich Marketing-Management, in dem ich einen Bachelor-Abschluss erworben habe. Diese Kenntnisse habe ich ebenfalls in meiner Karriere angewendet und weiterentwickelt. It was the most recommended manga on my Gekiga Reddit Post (some really good recs on there), and upon looking it up I was convinced I had to have it. It's not the easiest to get right now so I'm grateful there was one listing at a fair price, and it came in satisfactory condition. I have heard that it is a very insightful manga on the topic of Gekiga, and shares the perspective of a legendary author in the field (he is alleged to have coined the term 'Gekiga' in 1957), among other things. Pros: * Listened to in audiobook * Mostly relatable as a person * Accomplished many things most of us could only dream about * Never lets anyone sway his goals or beliefs * Vivid storyteller Cons: * Very long-winded * Comes across as very vain * How he met his wife and what happened later leaves the reader with very sketchy feelings regarding how he seemed to trap her in his house * Also, he comes across as a bit narcissistic in the fact that he wouldn't leave his then girlfriend out of his sight and then moved her completely away from her friends and family * Did NOT need to hear about wet dreams, of any type * He discussed honestly vs bullshit, and I'm thinking this book was a mixture of both I had been really looking forward to reading/listening to this book. I normally enjoy his films. However, this book seemed to be just a self-centered trip down memory lane, with some fluff thrown in for fun. This autobiography documents the life-changing moment when a high-flying neurosurgeon is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, at the peak of his career. The book starts with a memoir of how and why Paul established a career as a neurosurgeon and transitions into his involuntary role of being a patient. As he considers his premature mortality, he invites readers to ponder the fragility of life and the search for purpose in life. Overall, this book felt a little clinical and detached for me. Given the title, I was expecting a moving or somewhat philosophical read about confronting mortality. However it’s important to remember that Paul wrote this book when he was dying. Perhaps it was too painful to confront those feelings, or perhaps it was too exposing. Paul left behind a loving family and perhaps he had them in mind when he wrote this. The book closes with an epilogue from Paul’s wife which is beautifully compassionate and moving.
