Figured I’d talk about the early USAF’s uniforms/gear. Photos 1 & 2 depict the basic attire of an AF officer in the Korean War. Elements of the WWII-era AAF are incorporated such as the HBT 2nd pattern trousers and gold belt buckle. However new USAF elements are present such as the blue L-2A jacket, cap and belt, and the black shoes. A rank insignia was worn on the left collar in lieu of the AAF prop & wings and the M43 cap was also typically worn for duties other than flying. The post-war shoulder patch on the shirt is that of the MATS (Military Air Transport Service). 3 depicts the flight gear of a C-119 Flying Boxcar pilot, with the late-WWII L-1 flight suit and B-8 parachute harness with the B-5 life vest. Headset worn is a model AN-H-B7. 4 is the dress blues uniform which I’ve talked about before, in blue wool shade 84, the first blue shade officially authorized by the independent USAF in 1949. Brave Greek soldiers fighting off Italian invaders during the Greco-Italian War in WW2. The Greco-Italian War began on October 28, 1940, when Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas rejected Italian Fascist leader Benito Mussolini’s ultimatum to permit Italy’s occupation of certain strategic points or face war. The Greeks chose to stand their ground and fight heroically. Surprisingly and heroically the underdog Greeks (with British air and supplies support) pushed back the Italians, which in turn forced Hitler to have to invade Greece. This delayed Hitler’s invasion of Russia by two to three months, which ultimately changed the outcome of the War. Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin said, “We thank the Greek People, whose resistance decided WWII…you fought unarmed and won, small against big…You gave us time to defend ourselves.” British Prime minister Winston Churchill also famously praised the Greek people in a speech, “Hence, we will not say that Greeks fight like heroes, but that heroes fight like Greeks.” . Then And Now… 🇯🇪🇬🇧 @pommedorhotel One of the first key objectives for Force 135 upon landing ashore to liberate Jersey was to secure the Pomme D’Or Hotel, then being used as the Headquarters for the Kriegsmarine (German Navy). The image of British “Tommies” standing upon the hotel’s balcony has become a defining image of the Liberation of Jersey, and is recreated as part of the Island’s Liberation Day commemorations on May 9th every year. Soviet Victory Day poster commemorating May 9, 1945, which was the officially celebrated date of Soviet Red Army victory in Berlin after the signing of the German Instrument of Surrender, making today the 79th anniversary of the Soviet victory. The signing occurred late May 8th Berlin time, May 9th Moscow time per the time difference. Poster designed by Yevgeny Kazhdan in 1969. The poster features the well known Soviet-designed and produced PPSh-41 SMG designed by Georgy Shpagin, utilized by many on the front lines of the war, which remained in commission from 1941-60s in the USSR. Around the barrel is the ribbon of the Soviet Order of Glory, awarded to many Soviet soldiers of the Second World War. Since her stay in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, USS New Jersey has been given a new coat of paint that will prevent future corrosion. This also gives her a new look compared to the last time this process was done near the end of the 20th century. A Desperate Fight | US Army Philippine Dept. For those who may not know, I have been a part-time elementary and middle school level educator for the past few years, working at a private Catholic school. Today I had the utmost privilege to present a display on the US Army’s Philippine Department and the brutal fight for the Philippines during the Japanese invasion in late 1941 through early 1942. Representing two units, the 26th Cavalry Regiment (PS) and the 59th Coast Artillery Regiment, I was able to educate students on two major types of combat during the campaign and the struggles faced by those who served in both. It was extremely well received by both students and staff alike, and practically right in line with the anniversary of the American and Filipino surrender to the Japanese. May is also Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, creating basically the perfect time to present this. While I don’t own an M1910A1 azimuth instrument for coastal defense (yet!) I do own some vintage surveying equipment, and a surveyor’s scope was a good stand-in for an actual gun sight. :) DISCLAIMERS: All firearms used in this presentation were replicas. 8/9th May 1945 - the last two days of the uprising The situation was critical for both sides. The day began with a similarly brutal attack by German units. They bombarded the town with aeroplanes and artillery, followed by an intensive infantry attack. The Germans captured Libeň, Holešovice and Karlín. The German tanks now advanced as far as the Old Town Square. The neo-Gothic wing of the Old Town Hall was so badly damaged in the fighting that it had to be demolished in 1947. 47 prisoners were killed at Hybern railway station, 20 people were killed in Dejvice and 20 people were killed in Pod-Hrabovou Street. One particularly fierce battle took place at the Masaryk train station. At 10 am, SS troops captured the station and murdered around 50 surrendered resistance fighters and noncombatants. In one of the last battles of the uprising, Czech insurgents regained the train station at 2 am on 9 May. and photographed the victims' bodies. Even the remaining part of the "Vlasov Army" could not do much more damage. Why exactly one part remained in the city can only be assumed; of course, it cannot be ruled out that the unit remained in Prague on the orders of General Bunyachenko, or at least with his tacit approval. In any case, in the course of 8 May, it placed itself at the disposal of the Czech National Council and, according to the confirmation issued, entered the army as a "volunteer detachment of Russiansoldiers (formerly in the Vlasov army)". The B-17 "Hell's Angels" was a famous Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber during World War II, notable for being the first heavy bomber to complete 25 combat missions without losing a crew member. The aircraft was named after the 1930 Howard Hughes film "Hell's Angels," which showcased World War I aerial combat. Concrete LCT (landing craft tank) constructed in Brauntion Burrows in north Devon in the lead up to the Normandy landings. The north Devon coast was used extensively in preparation ready for the liberation of nazi occupied north west Europe. Troops based in the area would land at the beaches Omaha and Utah. Na vlakovém nádraží v Bylnici jsme uctili památku pana Josefa Sourala, drážního zaměstnance, který v časech nacistické okupace byl činným příslušníkem odboje. Od roku 1936 zastával funkci předsedy Sokola v Bylnici a po okupaci pracoval v ilegální organizaci Obrana národa. Organizoval ilegální přechody osob přes státní hranici na Slovensko. Činnost byla prozrazena, gestapo jej zatklo a převezlo k výslechu do Kounicových kolejí v Brně, kde byl odsouzen a následně odvlečen do koncentračního tábora Mauthausen. Josef Soural nevydržel útrapy věznění, mučení a zemřel 11. 3. 1942 ve svých 41 letech. Jack Betteil nasceu em 28 de novembro de 1923. Quando as forças alemãs invadiram a Polônia em 1939, ele tinha apenas 15 anos. Pouco depois, sua família foi obrigada a viver no gueto de Cracóvia. No mesmo período, seus avós maternos, Chaim e Feiga Kempler, os únicos judeus na pequena cidade polonesa onde moravam, foram delatados e mortos pelos nazistas. 3.09.2023 - Muzeum Molke 1/2 - Drugi zwiedzony przeze mnie obiekt z Die Riese. Do muzeum Molke miałem ochotę pojechać już od dawien dawna. Chciałem na żywo zobaczyć tę słynną konstrukcję jaką jest muchołapka i w końcu udało się wybrać wyraz z Filipem i Anetą. Miejsce to owiane jest sporą ilością teorii spiskowych, które będący na miejscu przewodnik w piękny sposób obala. Z jednej strony brutalnie obdziera z całej tej tajemniczej otoczki, a z drugiej opowiada z niesamowitą pasją, a nie ma nic lepszego od słuchania człowieka mówiącego o swojej pasji. Zdjęcia postanowiłem podzielić na te znajdujące się na powierzchni oraz na te robione w tunelach. Udało mi się zrobić tutaj kilka ciekawych ujęć, ale niestety robione były telefonem także nie nadają się na profil artystyczny @napietygrafikpl, ale właśnie po to stworzyłem to konto. Jako kontener przemyśleń i wspomnień. Tym którzy jeszcze nie byli - polecam to miejsce ponieważ za śmieszne pieniądze można posłuchać naprawdę ciekawej historii i zobaczyć dobrze zachowane eksponaty.
