Bob Batterson May 8th 1921- August 11 2023 USS Philadelphia Bob's father was named Norman, who served in World War 1. World War 2: Bob joined the Navy because President Franklin D Roosevelt was expanding the Navy, jobs were scarce & Bob wanted to see the world. The feeling among the enlisted men was if the Japs wanted to take us on, we’d wipe them out in three months. I thought of them with buck teeth and heavy glasses. Was I ever surprised at Pearl Harbor when those pilots and gunners flew by in the torpedo planes—handsome dudes. It changed my attitude about the Japanese. In 1941 I made 3rd class petty officer and was assigned to a big commissary store at Pearl Harbor. At night I worked in the officers’ club posting chits. On December 7, 1941 I was sleeping in the enlisted barracks with 20 other guys. We were ticked off because we thought it was a drill on a Sunday morning. Then a Jap torpedo plane flew by and we knew we were at war. One flew by every 10 to 15 seconds on their way to Battleship Row. We were less than a mile away and had a perfect view of everything. We started to help survivors being brought in and were then ordered to a firefighting party for the Cassin and Downes destroyers, which had been bombed in dry dock. As we got into the truck to go down there, we were strafed. I don’t know how they missed us, but they did. At 9:30 it became quiet. The Japanese had canceled their third strike, which saved our necks. A third strike would have neutralized Pearl Harbor as a logistic support base. They opened pilot training to enlisted personnel, and I put in for it. By darn, just about a year later I was in flight training. The F6 had 2800 horsepower. I’ll never forget sitting there waiting to give her a throttle and whoa! That was a thrill. We thought we’d be assigned to an operating squadron and get out there and hit the Japs. We ended up in a replacement squadron at Pearl Harbor. He was later assigned to the Hellcat fighters. "I’ll never forget sitting there waiting to give her a throttle and whoa!" His first combat hop was spotting for the USS Massachusetts during the bombardment of the Imperial Ironworks in Kamaishi, Japan.

Many Academy graduates were active in the Atlantic Theatre, Greenland Patrols, and several other operations. Photo 1: Captains Edward Fritzche (Left) and Miles Imlay (Right, USCGA c/o 1926). Fritzche was awarded the Legion of Merit for the commanding the main landing force and preparing and executing the amphibious assault on June 6th, 1944 (D-Day). Imlay was awarded the Silver Star for actions as Deputy Commander of an assault group. Under heavy enemy fire, Implay made on the spot decisions of reorganizing and dispatching landing craft to Omaha beach. Photos 2 & 3: Several Coast Guard LCVP’s carrying American soldiers head towards Omaha Beach. Right when opening the bow doors, several American troops were instantly killed by enemy fire. Photo 4: RADM Edward H Smith (USRCS/USCGA c/o 1913) was the commanding officer of USCGC Northland, and Commander of the Greenland Patrol. Jeg rakk dessverre aldri å møte han, da han gikk bort halvannet år før jeg ble født, men hans historie er blitt meg fortalt gjentatte ganger opp igjennom årene. I starten av 1942, da det var blitt kutyme for den tyske okkupasjonsmakten å tvangsinnmelde alle landets ungdommer i Hitler Jugend, rømte han som 16-åring sammen med noen kamerater til Sverige. Etter et lengre opphold der, mønstret han på minesveiperen Mandal i Liverpool i 1944. Bildet regner min familie med at er fra hans tid på rekruttskolen før mønstringen. Jeg må si jeg er litt stolt av å komme fra en familie som sto bastant på riktig side av historien i noen av verdenssamfunnets mest skjebnesvangre dager. Og av å dele hans bursdag, den 5. januar. Mijn echtgenoot namen route 1, met als zeer goede begeleidster Karin De Greeve, die een woordje uitleg gaf bij iedere Stolpersteine, waarna de burgemeester van Hasselt, Steven Vandeput, na de minuut stilte en de Brabançonne een witte roos neerlegde. 10:30 uur: Maastrichterstraat 106/108 - Arthur Kossmann & Erna Haas 11 uur: Demerstraat 43/45 - Lucien Collin & Tina Lucas 11:30 uur: Dorpstraat 7 - Jozef Vandebriel 12:10 uur: De Gerlachestraat 9 - François Melchior Rond 13 uur: Receptie in Het Stadsmus met verse broodjes en gelegenheid tot napraten. Good evening. Today is V.E. Day - Victory in Europe - the day on which in 1945 Nazi Germany capitulated. In Europe we're seeing the return of far right parties with their roots in the nazi and fascist parties. The bizar thing is that these parties, whose forerunners participated in the genocide on the European Jews are now supporting the genocide on the Palestinians by Israel. These are photographs from NS Ordensburg Vogelsang in the Eifel region in Germany closr to the border with Belgium. An Ordensburg was an institute where the NSDAP trained the future administrators of Germany and of the territoties conquered in Eastern Europe. Staff Sgt. Arthur Moore of Buffalo, New York, who was wounded in Belgium, stands near Grand Central Station as New Yorkers celebrate news of VE Day and Germany's surrender. Today marks the 79th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, when the Allies formally accepted Germany's unconditional surrender after nearly six years of war. The German Instrument of Surrender was signed at 02:41 on 7 May 1945 by General Alfred Jodl at Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) at Reims in northeastern France. The formal act of military surrender would take effect the following day. The next day, Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel and other representatives of the German High Command (OKW) travelled to Berlin to sign another document of unconditional surrender of all German forces in the presence of Marshal Georgi Zhukov and representatives of SHAEF. At 15:00 on May 8, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end: "Hostilities will end officially at one minute after midnight tonight, but in the interests of saving lives the cease fire began yesterday to be sounded all along the front, and our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed today." Years of carnage and destruction that cost the lives of tens of millions, destroyed homes, cities and families; and brought huge suffering to the populations of many countries in Europe finally ended. In towns and cities across the world, people marked the Allied victory in Europe with street parties, dancing and singing. But it was not the end of World War II, nor was it an end of its long-lasting impacts. Crazy day at work today 🤣🤣🤣 working on an Army base that's been in use since ww1. The first thing you see driving through the gates "explosives kill, do not pick up ANYTHING". Well we got to the job site and removed one of the two trees we had to take down. As I walked to the last tree to head up and get started on the removal, I look down and see this BETWEEN my feet. Turns out to be an m19a1 white phosphorus rifle grenade. We reported it to the office up front and needless to say our job site was shut down until e.o.d. can come detonate it. They said it was either cs gas or white phosphorus 😬😬😬😬 and it's just been sitting there for ATLEAST 50 years in the elements. He would be extradited to Yugoslavia and put on trial for ordering the massacre of civilians in the village of Alibunar. Another beautiful painting on the wall inside the grand blockhouse. A lot of these paintings are gone since the end of the war. You can stil find some in bunkers on the atlantikwall. In the area of Saint Nazaire and La Rochelle, there are still a lot of these to witness. Soldiers painted these drawings on the wall to make the bunkers a bit more house friendly. How would you be if you would be stationed for months in a grey, damp and dark bunker? This reflects yet again that soldiers only were humans. Some of them loved art, music or other things. Squadron Leader Joseph Berry, DFC & Bar., of Sunnydale Road, Nottingham, is the 24 year old top-scoring A.D.G.B. fighter pilot against flying bombs. After destroying more than 60 of them, all but three between dusk and dawn, Squadron Leader Berry was given the job of commanding a squadron specially formed to deal with the robots at night. On the morning of 2 October 1944 Berry was flying a "dawn ranger" patrol south-west of Assen in a Tempest Mark V (serial number EJ600, squadron code SD-F). His aircraft was hit by small arms fire while he was flying at 50 feet over Veendam, in Groningen, leading two other Tempests on a sortie against an airfield and rail yards near Bad Zwischenahn. His final radio message was "I've had it chaps; you go on." Berry was apparently flying too low to bail out and he was killed when his aircraft crashed near the hamlet of Kibbelgaarn. Berry is buried in Scheemda Protestant Cemetery, Netherlands. Picture found via IWM museum. Starring Winfield is youthful and dashing in the old photograph, standing beside his beautiful bride on their wedding day on Sept. 23, 1941. Uncommonly bright, he’d skipped two years of school to graduate from San Rafael High School in 1936. It was there that he met and fell in love with Gailene Walker, whose family hailed from Santa Rosa. Winfield enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1940. His life, so rich with promise, was cut short on Dec. 7, 1941. Radioman 3rd Class Winfield, 22, was one of 429 crew members who perished on the battleship USS Oklahoma, which capsized in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, after being struck by at least five Japanese torpedoes. Compounding the grief of their loved ones was the limbo to which the Oklahoma’s dead were relegated. Following a two-year effort to winch the 27,000-ton dreadnought upright, laboratory staff were only able to positively identify 35 of its crew members. Nine years ago the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) launched an ambitious undertaking called USS Oklahoma Project, aimed at reuniting the unidentified heroes with their names. Since then, using DNA profiling techniques unavailable to their predecessors, Defense Department scientists have identified 356 crew members. One of them was Starring Winfield, who will be buried Thursday at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, with full military honors. Read more at the link in our bio.
