General Sir John Monash (1865-1931) General Sir John Monash was an Australian civil engineer and commander during the First World War. Born to Jewish immigrant parents from Prussia o he would grow up in Melbourne, before moving to NSW, and ultimately back to Melbourne with his family. At 14, he passed the Scotch College matriculation exam, and graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Masters in Engineering in 1893. As a civil engineer, he was crucial in the introduction of reinforced concrete in Australian engineering. In 1884, he joined the university company of the militia, working his way through the ranks of the North Melbourne battery. He was continuously promoted, earning the ranks of lieutenant, captain, lieutenant-colonel, and eventually colonel. When being awarded the rank of colonel, he was also also given command of the 13th Infantry Brigade in 1913. The Great War began in 1914, and so, too, was he given control of battalions 13-16. His battalions saw fighting in Gallipoli that same year, whereupon he was awarded the rank of Brigadier General. He utilised his engineering knowledge to sustain his troops during the winter, helping them survive with relative comfort, though they were all given the evacuation order in Mid-December of that year. Throughout the war, Monash would command troops on the western front battles of Hamel, Amiens, the Hindenburg Line, and others, as peers and fellow officers took note of his intellect and outside-the-box thinking. The Allied forces secured victory in the First World War in 1918, and General Monash was given numerous distinctions, honors, and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-General. Regarded by British historian A.J.P. Taylor as “the only general of creative originality produced by the First World War”, was famed for his belief in integration of all of the armed forces at disposal. He was buried in a Jewish cemetery in 1931, accompanied by 300,000 mourners. 5 Iyar - State of Israel - 1948 On this day in 1948, David Ben Gurion declared the modern State of Israel and became its First Prime Minister. The event took place at the Tel Aviv Museum (now called Independence Hall) and was kept secret until it happened due to concerns that the British would stop it or the Arabs would attack early. In almost prophetic words in 1897 after the First Zionist Congress, Theodor Herzl wrote in his diary, “In Basel, I founded the Jewish State… Perhaps in five years, and certainly in fifty, everyone will agree.” 51 years later, the world witnessed it happen. The declaration was read at 6 pm and went into effect at midnight when the British Mandate officially came to an end. Israel was immediately attacked by Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq. The fighting lasted 10 months broken up by several truce periods. In the end, the undertrained, barely organized, and minimally armed newly formed Israeli Defense Force was able to not only defend the fledgling country but conquer 60% of the land promised to the Arabs under the UN Partition Plan. Encouraged by their own leaders, nearly 700,000 Arabs had fled their homes in what was to become Israel. They were told to get out of the way while the Arab armies wiped the Jews out. Then they could spread out. Not only did that not happen, but those same leaders did not absorb the refugees into their countries. On the other hand, nearly 700,000 Jews were expelled from Arab countries. All of those refugees were absorbed into the new State of Israel.
