Sadly we are unable to share news links here in Canada (write your MP) so I shared the article below. ————- That idea is central to the Decolonial Little Library in Hamilton’s Kirkendall neighbourhood. Stewarded by Madeline Wilson Shaw, who’s Haudenosaunee, and Ryan McMahon, who’s Anishinaabe, it features books by Indigenous authors from a decolonial perspective. The repainted newspaper box sports art featuring the plastic “cowboy and Indian” figurines many children of a certain age grew up playing with, McMahon said — a play on such toys and stories being a precedent for Indigenous storytelling. The couple say their family has worried about the library putting a target on them, but the community largely seems to have embraced it since they set it up last summer. The Decolonial Little Library on Locke Street South in Hamilton features books by Indigenous authors. Unlike many little free libraries that draw from a wider pool of titles, Wilson Shaw and McMahon say they’ve had to strictly review and curate their offerings to make sure they fit the theme. Initially, they stocked it with a lot of their own favourites. They now have about 180 titles in circulation and receive community donations. Sometimes, McMahon said, they get books they think are racist, which has led to important discussions with donors about why they don’t want to include them. They’ve also received books they didn’t know about before and really liked. Niiostoseraah Thompson is better known by her traditional name: Small Feather. Born and raised on the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory, she grew up immersed in her culture; she’s fluent in Mohawk. As a child, her mother taught her how to do beadwork and Small Feather soon realized that although time-consuming, beadwork was the soul of her design creations. She often began designs with sketches of clothing and accessories that celebrated her heritage; however, beadwork is her true calling. Studying at the Richard Robinson Academy, Small Feather built on her love for design and began honing her unique style. Living in Ottawa, she can travel to other city centres where she finds inspiration in music and design, as well as in the oral stories and traditional teachings of her own culture. Her vibrant designs and colorways are from the changing seasons and Haudenosaunee motifs. Today in Labor History May 13, 1968: The Poor People’s Campaign raised Resurrection City, in Washington, D.C. The tent shanty town, part of the campaign to gain economic justice for poor people, existed for six weeks. The Poor People’s Campaign was originally organized by Martin Luther King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). However, Ralph Abernathy took over leadership after King’s assassination. It developed from the realization that civil rights gains had not improved material conditions for African Americans. However, the Poor People’s Campaign was a multiracial movement that included white, Asian Hispanic and Indigenous Americans. Some of the Campaign’s leaders included Chicano leaders Corky Gonzales and Reies Tijerina. Other participants included Appalachian miners. The FBI and military intelligence spied on the camp and wiretapped the campaign. Context matters: Choosing to look at things from one perspective (i.e, race or nationality) we limit ourselves to placing people in boxes of colonized convenience. Decolonized thinking requires learning and unlearning those contextual frameworks which have caused harm to indigenous bodies all over the planet. We all carry the great mother wound from the pillaging of mother earth and the effects of colonization. Some context…… gentrification in my hometown of Port Royal South Carolina is very real. A small coastal town once known for its thriving shrimping industry is home to many Gullah families and their descendants. It is now a golf cart riding, dog walking community of others with homes built at $400,000 and home/apartment rentals at $2000 and up is now pricing out residents who have lived there most of their lives. This is a disturbing trend not only in Port Royal, but throughout our entire Sea Islands, threatening our culture and history. Reading @decolonizingtherapy by Dr Jennifer Mulllan is a gut buster which has further opened my eyes, mind, and heart by embracing rage, expanding consciousness, and taking deliberate action to unlearn harmful practices which do not serve our humanity. Another gem, My Grandmother‘s Hands by @resmaamenakem which teaches on the embodiment of trauma bringing awareness to metabolizing trauma in our bodies. PRESS RELEASE CASR STRONGLY CONDEMNS THE COLD BLOODED MURDER OF 12 ADIVASI IN BIJAPUR BY INDIAN ARMED FORCES AND DEMANDS THAT THE GOVT STOP THE GENOCIDAL WAR AGAINST IT'S OWN PEOPLE On 11th May 2024, 12 people from Bijapur District, five from Pedia Village and 7 from Ethavar Village, were killed in a fake encounter by the paramilitary forces of the Indian state. These villagers were out to gather Tendu leaves, a long-term traditional agrarian practice for Adivasi peasants during this season. Seeing the security forces, they ran in fear of repression. The security forces shot them down while they tried to flee. Many of the villagers were dragged away from their houses and shot dead. 30 Adivasis raising their voice against this injustice have been detained by security forces and only 25 have been released. In conversation with local media, Adivasis disclosed that among the killed persons, is Sethu Kunjam, a 5th class student studying in Basaguda School and another one is channu Avalam who is of unsound mind. One person was also injured after sustaining 3 bullets in his leg and is unwilling to go to hospital due to the fear of being killed by security forces.This is not an isolated incident happening in Bastar. There is a history of fake encounters by security forces and police in Bastar. Especially in the last 5 months since the BJP came to power in Chhattisgarh, this assault on Adivasi peasantry, which was already going on in the forested regions of Central India, has intensified. This hidden war is a genocide being committed on the Adivasi peasants in the name of neutralizing the Maoists. The state has used advanced levels of weaponry in the area including aerial bombing by Israel made drones. This January, the state bombed villages in Bastar for the fifth time. In this area Armed forces and police have a clear impunity in everything they do in the name of eliminating Maoist. All this happens because the Indian state wants to facilitate the corporate loot of natural resources of Adivasi land. Eghquhous was a vast wilderness in the 17th century; owned and occupied by the Lenape people. By the 1660s, it was known as Staaten Eylandt. This weekend, I wandered Staten Island exploring its past relics. Staten Island has seen so much Dutch, English, and American history. Off of Arthur Kill Road is home to the Blazing Star Cemetery. It stands in the middle of the Staten Island boat graveyard and a car wash. Some of the first European settlers of this Island are buried here.
