The court upheld student’s right to receive information and ideas and issued a partial injunction, prohibiting Arkansas from disciplining Ms. Ruthie Walls and Mr. Colton Gilbert, teachers and plaintiffs in the case, from simply teaching about Critical Race Theory (CRT), using CRT or parts of CRT to teach other topics, or referencing parts of CRT in their teachings. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and civil rights attorneys Mike Laux and Austin Porter Jr. filed a complaint and motion for preliminary injunction against Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and the state of Arkansas on behalf of the Arkansas State Conference of the NAACP, two Little Rock teachers and two students attending the historic Central High School. The plaintiffs are challenging the constitutionality of Arkansas’ controversial classroom censorship law and the discriminatory treatment of students taking the Advanced Placement (AP) African American Studies course in public schools. Does protest have to be popular for it to be effective? Today’s protestors are engaging in civil disobedience by boycotting, blocking highways, occupying buildings, and more. These tried and true tactics to voice dissent have been employed in past movements such as the Civil Rights era, labor movement, and anti-war activism. Yet these tactics weren’t always popular at the time they were employed. In 1961, a Gallup poll showed that the majority of U.S. Americans believed the Civil Rights demonstrations actually “hurt” the cause of integration in the South. But because of the persistent actions of protestors and advocates, the South was desegregated. Now looking back, the majority of Americans view those demonstrations favorably. By design, protests are not typically easy or convenient. We should support movements while they’re happening, not just after they win, because they're essential to winning change. #shiftthenarrative #protests #civilrights

Please join us at Orangeland Gallery to experience a special pop-up art exhibit by our eighth- and seventh-grade students: “Can art amend history?” The guys have been studying the artwork of Titus Kaphar and Kehinde Wiley, who tell the stories of people left out of history and out of art, the stories and poems written on the walls of the Angel Island Immigration Station, the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, Gabriel Coakley, who was enslaved but gained his freedom, moved to Washington, D.C., and earned enough money to purchase all of his enslaved relatives and bring them to live with him, and the civil rights movement and its leaders, including Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, John Lewis, and others. All of our Grade 8 and 7 students then made drawings, paintings, and iMovies depicting the people and stories they’ve been studying, all of which are on display at Orangeland Gallery through Saturday, May 11, with a special reception Saturday from 12:00pm to 5:00pm. Wolfe racconta di nuovo una storia sul tema afroamericano, con l'ideazione e progettazione della marcia più famosa d'America, in particolare del suo ideatore, un personaggio che sinceramente non conoscevo e che mi ha fatto piacere scoprire. Rispetto ad altri film del genere questo l'ho trovato meno emozionante, diciamo che mi prendeva di meno, forse anche dovuto al fatto che si tratta di organizzare la marcia, quindi vediamo tante scene di riunioni, abbastanza statiche, infatti punto a favore del film, la colonna sonora, molto ritmata ed azzeccata che riesce a tenere su il film donandogli ritmo in momenti che se no sarebbero stati molto statici e a rischio di creare noia. Una storia vera che forse non emoziona al massimo ma che comunque riesce a prenderti, anche grazie ad una bellissima colonna sonora ed un grande prova attoriale da parte del protagonista, per conoscere la storia dietro alla più grande marcia d'America, consigliamo la visione se si vuole approfondire questa parte della storia americana o per conoscere una storia vera ed emozionante. Just returned from an amazing trip to Washington DC for the Arkansas State Chamber Fly-In and the Unveiling of the Daisy Bates Statue at the United States Capitol! The State Chamber Fly-In was an incredible opportunity to connect with chamber members, advocate for important issues, and make our voices heard on Capitol Hill. I enjoyed interacting with people I’ve known for years and making many new connections as well! The highlight of my trip was undoubtedly witnessing the historic unveiling of the Daisy Bates statue at the United States Capitol. It was a deeply moving experience to see Daisy Bates, a fearless civil rights activist, honored in such a meaningful way. Her legacy serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality and justice for all Americans. Being part of this momentous occasion was truly humbling, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to witness history being made. “Mosquito Beach is a .13-mile strip of land that served African Americans during the Jim Crow era, when nearby Folly Beach was segregated. The beach began as a gathering spot for workers at a nearby oyster factory in the 1920s and 1930s. A store selling seafood and drinks first opened in the 1930s. Other businesses followed in the 1940s and 1950s. Mosquito Beach lies along a tidal marsh historically known for the large mosquito population that gave the beach its name. By the 1960s, the beach provided African American leisure seekers with music venues, pavilions, restaurants, and a hotel. Mosquito Beach’s businesses as well as the land were owned by African Americans. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2019” -South Carolina Historical Marker The Mosquito Beach Historic District became part of the NPS African American Civil Rights Network in 2021 and the Pine Tree Hotel at Mosquito Beach is currently being rehabilitated using a National Park Service Civil Rights Grant.
