Gullah Geechee people have been able to thrive and preserve many West African traditions and practices throughout slavery. One way they’ve been able to do this is by interacting with the nature and wildlife that they have been forced to live with. History and legacy were honored and celebrated today here on Hilton Head Island. The Hilton Head Fishing Cooperative (the names of the members can be found in the last photo) saved our wetlands from pollution and ruin in April of 1970 by traveling along the coast headed to Washington D.C. in a 42ft shrimp trawler to collect signatures on a petition to protect the coastal waters from bio developers. 45,000 signatures and 25lbs of shrimp later, these gentlemen are the reason we are still able to eat from the land in which we call home and many call “paradise”. This beautiful mural by artist @amirifarris was also unveiled today, to honor the men, the occasion, the Gullah heritage and this beautiful island. The Tabernacle Baptist Church in Beaufort, SC will reveal the Harriet Tubman sculpture on June 1st at 1:00PM. The statue, which has been in the works since 2016, commemorates the Combahee River Raid that freed over 700 enslaved people. The 300 soldiers that accompanied Tubman on June 1, 1863 were part of the 2nd South Carolina Volunteer Infrantry— a regiment made up of freed men from the Sea Islands. Events will take place between Friday May 31 through Sunday June 2. "The search for the true identity of my 3rd great grandfather Charles McClellan alias John Martin of Company G in the 128th USCT Regiment of the Union Army (enlisted March 8, 1865 and discharged December 22, 1865), resulted in the discovery of his participation in a rebellion within the ranks of the Union Army during the Summer months of 1865. On June 4, 1865 Private John Martin partook in an organized act of rebellion when he “deserted” with gun and ammo along with several fellow USCT’s. Dr. Martin Robinson Delany, Major of the 104th U.S. Colored Troops was also present at Camp Stanton at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and actively involved in activities related to the rebellion of soldiers and the ordinary Freedmen population of Beaufort and Orangeburg District’s at the time. It’s day 2 of Black birders week and today is #blackbirderculture ! I’m sharing about birds that are significant in Gullah Geechee culture with this throwback video I did for timucuannps from last year! Gullah Geechee people have been able to thrive and preserve many West African traditions and practices throughout slavery. One way they’ve been able to do this is by interacting with the nature and wildlife that they have been forced to live with. There’s many animal folklore and stories with birds which allowed them to express feelings they endured during enslavement, death, and freedom. As a matter of fact, by 1840 the Georgetown District produced nearly one-half of the total rice crop in the United States. Large amounts of enslaved Africans were in this area, where they were forced to work the fields. Sweetgrass artist and historian @corey_alston_sweetgrassbasket is a fifth generation basket maker who gave us a chapter-and-verse introduction to Gullah Geechee culture. Although men originally created baskets, that changed when Africans were kidnapped and brought to America to be enslaved. Here, African men tamed the land, engineered it for crops our ancestors didn’t know how to grow, and gave much of the hard labor and skills it took to build this nation. Cities sold slaves. It was a revenue stream. Sweetgrass baskets became almost exclusively a female art form, so while men still learn the craft, Corey is one of the few. The basket he is working on here will take two months to make. His family’s booth is near the front of Charleston’s City Market. Go see him.
