Adhesive-free polyethylene book jackets are one method we use to preserve and extend the life of collections. The CoLibrì cover system allows us to efficiently retain and protect the text and illustrations contained on publisher’s dust jackets that would otherwise not withstand regular library use. We also occasionally use it to consolidate relatively intact bindings that have loose or fragile bits, such as fraying or torn cloth spines and degraded “red rot” leather that has become powdery and readily transfers to the reader’s hands and onto the pages of the book during use. Here student assistant Karita Nguyen applies CoLibrì book jackets to new acquisitions with informative illustrated dust jackets. Did You Know? ~ Birch Bark Flashing. This image shows strips of birch bark installed as flashing between the window trim and clapboard siding on the Federal style Isaac Hobbs House in Eastport, Maine. This was done c. 1820, drawing on the traditions of the local Passamaquody tribe. Native Americans had used waterproof birch bark for centuries in constructing their long houses and canoes. I have seen this application in several areas of northern New England, and it may have been used more widely. It is a wonderful illustration of how the building and cultural traditions of all those who have called America "home" have been borrowed, adapted, mixed, and repurposed through the centuries as the population has become ever more diverse. Our historic buildings are physical repositories of this history - whether it is birch bark flashing in Maine, the Spanish adapting Native construction traditions to create adobe brick in the Southwest, or the mixed Dutch, English, and German influences in the early buildings of New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. Variations occur all over the country, depending on the Native peoples and origins of European settlers in any given region. The Hobbs House is currently undergoing restoration after a long period of abandonment. Its owner, Jim Pollowitz, posts regularly about the project in the Isaac Hobbs Mansion Restoration facebook group. Thanks for the photo, Jim! On this #MarylandHeritageAreasMonday, we are highlighting a Maryland Heritage Areas Authority (MHAA) grant-funded project in the Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway. With support from a FY 2023 MHAA grant, the Havre de Grace Colored School Museum & Cultural Center is continuing to restore its historic 1912 schoolhouse (pictured here). Grant funds are supporting critical repairs to waterproof the basement and roof. These repairs are vital to preserving the building’s structural integrity and will lay the groundwork for a future, more comprehensive restoration of the school’s original classrooms. Just as we started a new series on planning, we realized that May is National Preservation Month! So for the next two weeks, how about we explore VSBA’s preservation projects (then return to planning)? First up -- a few years ago, VSBA completed rehabilitation of the landmark Guild House, one of Robert Venturi’s earliest built works. Guild House was designed to serve the elderly. We modified five apartments to meet current accessibility requirements and equipped some units for hearing and visually impaired residents. Our rehabilitation provided new systems throughout for heating and cooling, automatic sprinklers, fire alarm, and emergency lighting; a new security call system to the manager’s office and front door; a new emergency notification system with ADA compliant pull-cord devices in all units; electrical upgrades such as new digital accessibility wiring and devices for telephone, Internet, and TV access for all apartments; and external cameras. New amenities include offices for a social worker and visiting care providers and a Wellness Room with exercise equipment, ping pong and pool tables, a large screen TV, and interactive fitness video games. Exterior repairs included replacement of worn original aluminum windows with new units -- including insulated low-emittance glazing for improved thermal performance -- replacement of damaged bricks, and the addition of horizontal control joints at relieving angles. Fabulous Second Empire house with matching carriage house in Dexter, Maine. This Second Empire style house has a lot of presence for a relatively small house. The defining feature of a Second Empire style building is the Mansard roof, named for 17th-century French Baroque architect François Mansart. It was first used for an addition to the Louvre palace in Paris c. 1550. It became fashionable again during the Second French Empire (1852–1870), corresponding with the middle Victorian era in the English-speaking world. Typically called a French roof in the U.S. during the mid-19th century, when all things French were "en vogue" for fashionable Americans. It is an urban legend that Mansard roofs were built to avoid being taxed for another story of living space. Second Empire buildings are essentially Italianate in style from the eave line down, but the roof gives them a different identity. The little Mansard "cap" at the top of this house is particularly fabulous. The matching carriage house is wonderful too. The word osteotomy is intimidating for both patients and some surgeons. Without a lot of experience, it can be a challenging surgery and indications can be difficult to understand. I’m fortunate to see a high volume of cartilage patients and those dedicated to saving their knees. We have seen from the Korean data that offloading the compartment can improve joint space and, in some cases, there may be some cartilage regrowth and improvement. I don’t not often talk about this last part with my patients to avoid “overselling” the procedure. This X-ray below is a perfect example of how powerful realignment can be. I have seen this in my last 6 medial offloading HTOs and wanted to share this simple image. These X-rays are both taken weight bearing (one preop and one at 6 weeks). You may also notice we did a little slope correction to help her ACL out as well. This patient is 35 years old with medial pain was walking full weight bearing into my office with no pain at 6 weeks. You can even see her healing is ahead as well. Again, she was hesitant to undergo this surgery and it took several visits to get to this point. This brings up another point, I am never push for a surgery like this, I told her several times it was up to her I just have the tools when she is ready. When she finally asked me for surgery, I knew she was ready, and you can see at 6 weeks she is fully bought in. In 1965, when the Crane House & Historic YWCA was moved and restored to tell the story of its earliest occupants, historic preservation was in its infancy and policies were just being established. Tours will run at 12PM, 1PM, and 2PM. Each year May marks Preservation Month putting a spotlight on the people in our community who are doing the important work saving our places and building our communities through preservation.
