A group of 18 rights activists, former civil servants, lawyers, academics and others met officials of the Election Commission of India on Tuesday (May 14) to submit a letter about their concerns on the way voter turnout data is being published during the 2024 elections. They have asked the ECI to “immediately disclose through its website, the authenticated record of voter turnout as contained in Part I of Form 17C”. So far, the ECI has only published voter turnout percentages for the first two phases, and the final numbers released were higher than the approximates released on the day of polling. It has not released the number of people who cast their vote or total number of voters per constituency. Signatories include transparency rights activist Anjali Bhardwaj, lawyer Prashant Bhushan, ex IF officer Sundar Burra and others. “The inordinate delay in the release of voter turnout, coupled with the unusually high revision (of nearly 6%) sans any explanation in the ECI’s press note of April 30th, has raised concerns and doubts among people about the voter turnout figures,” the letter notes. § To Chief Election Commissioner & Election Commissioners Election Commission of India Dear Sirs, Subject- Proactive disclosure of Part I of Form 17C to put to rest doubts regarding fluctuation in figures of votes polled We are writing to flag our concerns arising from the large fluctuation in figures of voter turnout in the first two phases of the ongoing general elections and to urge the Election Commission of India to immediately disclose through its website, the authenticated record of voter turnout as contained in Part I of Form 17C. Following important client meetings in #London last week, I again had the opportunity to offer the #TuesdayClub my insights on crucial geopolitical challenges on the minds of key actors from #politics, #civilsociety, and the #economy. Entitled “Views from Berlin on Scholz in China and Macron’s Europe”, we debated the relationship between #Europe -especially #Germany- and #China. Our intense discussion spun around a possible adjustment of Germany’s #ChinaStrategy against #decoupling and #derisking. Additionally, we discussed China’s central role in solving the war in #Ukraine. During our deep and frank exchange we also spoke about China’s current challenges and difficulties. We concluded that overgeneralizations on any of these complex issues must be avoided. United Nations Civil Society Conference in Nairobi teilnehmen und gemeinsam mit über 3.000 Vertreter*innen der Zivilgesellschaft Impulse zum Thema „Shaping a Future of Global and Sustainable Progress“ Entwicklung setzen. Diese Konferenz war historisch, denn zum ersten Mal wurde die „UN New York Bubble“ aufgebrochen und eine UN Civil Society Conference in Afrika ausgerichtet. Und das zeigte sich auch im Publikum: 70 Prozent der Vertreter*innen kamen aus Afrika und 40 Prozent aller Vertreter*innen waren junge Menschen in der Altersgruppe von 18 bis 34 Jahren. In zahlreichen Workshops, Diskussionen und Redebeiträgen konnten konkrete Empfehlungen gesammelt werden, welche Schritte durch die internationale Gesellschaft unternommen werden müssen, um auf die aktuellen und zukünftigen Herausforderungen und Chancen zu reagieren. Und die Wichtigkeit zivilgesellschaftlicher Beteiligung wurde in der Abschlusssitzung auch von Secretary-General António Guterres bestätigt, der sagte: “We won’t give up in our push for peace, justice and human rights, and I know you won’t give up either. “It is when you are faced with difficult situations that you come up with the most creative solutions.” One Future Collective had the exciting opportunity to meet global civic society leaders in April 2024, when we attended the Strengthening the @civicusalliance meeting and the Steering Committee meeting for Vuka! Coalition for Social Action. One Future Collective serves on Vuka’s Steering Committee. Through this opportunity to meet the steering committee in person, we were able to participate in discussions centred on fostering collaboration among civic organisations and networks to advance our common goals. It was a week full of camaraderie, learning, joy, and collaboration towards our vision of a socially just world. We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to continue contributing to our goal of a vibrant and thriving civil society! Many political parties and platforms opposed to the Modi dispensation are putting up a resolute fight in these general elections. But a much more formidable challenge to it, albeit a quiet one, is being mounted by civil society. Scores of civil society organisations from across the country with little ambition to gain office are working with unimaginable zeal to rescue the core values of our Republic. The likely defeat of the Modi regime will be more of an outcome of their efforts. Opposition parties are merely going to be the incidental beneficiaries of those efforts. The current regime, however, has too much at stake and is unlikely to quietly leave office in the event of a defeat. There are loud clues that the regime has been making moves to preclude the possibility of its defeat. Before dwelling on why the regime is worried about leaving office, what it is afraid of if it is no longer in office, and what is at stake for it, we need to recollect the various measures the regime has already taken to avert a probable adverse mandate. The regime has eliminated the role of the Supreme Court in the selection and appointment of the Election Commissioners. Whether the government-appointed Election Commissioners will do the regime’s bidding is a matter of speculation or suspicion. However, the worrying truth is that today its impartiality has become questionable. The irrational and unnecessarily long-drawn election schedule announced by the Commission reeks of its willingness to accommodate the ruling dispensation’s preference. The abnormal indulgence shown to the prime minister and leaders of the ruling party when they so openly violated the Model Code of Conduct only makes the ECI’s impartiality even more doubtful.
