Last week, Tandem Amwaj partners met online and in person for the final meeting of the programme. Unfortunately, once again we had to compromise our hopes and excitement due to the hurdles of obtaining visas for partners from Egypt and Lebanon. It is annoying, and upsetting, yet such is the reality we have to deal with. Nevertheless, the meeting was pleasantly intense, filled with new ideas and hopeful wishes for the future. Together with partners we designed the next stage of the Tandem Amwaj programme and will go back to our desks to start working on it. In the next months, the programme still continues and we will share more exciting updates from local communities with you all! 🌻 Time flies and so did the summer. We welcomed September with joy and enthusiasm by hosting the Tandem Amwaj Interim meeting in Berlin. ✨ During two sunny and bright days, all five partner organisations had a chance to look back on the previous months and their organisational journey until now. Voicing met and unmet expectations, sharing current realities, and sharing expertise with peers allowed the group to grow even closer together. This is exactly what we need to move forward, isn't it? The highlight of the visit is the Carthage Dance Festival, with many performances and workshops on the programme. On the second day of her placement, Nelly visited @argaman.officiel and attended the workshop about ancient dyeing techniques used by the #phoenicians to dye natural fibers into Tyrian royal purple color using the #murex glands. This week you can see many stories from Tandem 360° programme meeting in Aswan, Egypt. Tandem 360° is the latest addition to the Tandem programmes for cultural exchange family. In the spirit of ‘Doing-it-together’, the one-year programme offered a space to experiment with multidisciplinary project ideas, ecosystem mapping and inventive approaches to create change through culture. The programme was open to participants based in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia, and from Libyan initiatives and collectives displaced in these countries. Tandem 360° aims to establish vital ecosystems as an enabling environment for political, social and economic inclusion of young people across the MENA region. The programme encourages cultural managers and civil society activists to participate in the local political, social, cultural and political processes, supporting peer-to-peer learning and exchange between various organisations from different disciplines and regional backgrounds. There were two rounds of Tandem 360° - 40 cultural managers participated. Although the global Covid-19 pandemic shifted many of our plans, we managed to gather participants in meetings that took place in Jordan and Egypt. Tandem programme runs since 10 years. Last year in November we had a hybrid celebration - people gathered online and offline to celebrate togetherness, friendship, to remember and tell stories. Tandem family grew big in these years - we have more than 450 cultural managers that went on Tandem journey. WHAT DOES A TANDEM JOURNEY LOOK LIKE? Within each Tandem programme, participants form cross-national partnerships of two, aka tandems. These Tandem partners organise working visits to each others’ cities or regions and develop a joint pilot project which serves as a space for mutual learning and engagement. Throughout the year, participants meet for networking, workshops and peer-to-peer exchange. At the end of the project there is a final presentation and the opportunity to connect with the growing Tandem network. The programme acts on different levels, offering professional development to individuals, as well as supporting organisational change processes and creating a space to experiment with innovative ideas. Hello hello, this week Tandem programme is taking over @actorsofurbanchange Instagram account! We are very happy to share with you what is our programme about, what do we do and even share some live, from the spot stories! WHAT IS TANDEM Tandem is a cultural collaboration programme that strengthens civil society in Europe and neighbouring regions. From Berlin to Beirut, throughout wider Europe, participants join from a variety of places and communities. For example, a theatre director based in Tunis can work with a curator based in Sofia on developing a project about representation of refugees in the city. While building a collaborative project, both partners commit to the process of working together, to share their expertise and to learn from each other. TOWARDS BUILDING TRUST AND DEMOCRATIC SPACES Tandem offers a space to build real, meaningful and sustainable relationships that can grow through shared artistic interests, enthusiasm for creative discovery and the joy of making things happen together. We believe these experiences can contribute to increasing empathy, breaking stereotypes and shaping a common language. None of us can just go on with our work without being impacted by what is happening in Ukraine, especially within the Tandem community where so many of us have close and personal connections with Ukraine. We had numerous meetings in Ukraine, and it breaks our hearts to witness the war today. The demand for emergency support is growing, as more people flee Ukraine every day and the war continues. Since the war started, the MitOst network has united in efforts to secure people, facilitate evacuations, and transport urgently needed equipment, we coordinated initiatives among partners across Ukraine and neighbouring countries. Please check @mitost_ev for more information. While doing all the emergency work, we would also like to acknowledge and call out many discourses propagated by Western media outlets that have been using racist and white supremacist language when describing the war and Ukrainian refugees, opposing it to other places like Iraq, Syria or Afghanistan that they disgustingly described as places where people are used to such violence! We are also appalled by the way certain people fleeing the country, such as African students but also other non-Ukrainians who are not white, have been treated at borders, being refused entry to safety. As a community rooted in solidarity, we condemn such hierarchization of humanity as well as violence against any community, and we invite you all to join our efforts to support the people being attacked in Ukraine, fighting every day for their lives. A big thank you to the dear cultural managers / Tandem 360* participants that received us in their places. The documentation that happened in Lebanon and Egypt with filmmaker @moh.elhadidi comes together these days and I can’t wait to capture the spirits of the program when finally the physical meetings happen after the Zoom marathon of the previous year. All the more this trip brought back life to the work and love for the encounters it involves. While some organisations don’t operate from offices and spaces partly due to covid and the multidimensional repercussions in Lebanon we were lucky to meet charismatic and energy driving Hiba Zibaoui who reopened the Ishbilia theater/cinema (1980-2006) in 2018 with her sister Nahla to provide an independent art hub in Saida @ishbiliatheatre, that offers as well a lively community café and workplaces for the neighborhood and the ones affected by the enduring power cuts these days. Arriving in Alexandria ^ spending a huge chunk of time in cars - in Lebanon collapsing with a gas crisis while heavily relying on the car and in cramped endless streets in Cairo - moving and seeing in motion (or congestion) in the region reminds me of Koyaanisqatsi - and also the the very question of climate change. Initiatives like Tabdeel in Abdeen, Cairo promoting cycling culture and providing a cargo bike for the neighborhood and Greenish in Maadi are hopeful attempts to birth Davids against the petrol Goliat. // On a demanding and rewarding roadtrip with dear @moh.elhadidi for #tandem360 - utmost grateful to be in touch with the world and its worlds and brave actors again, with the joy and the weight of seeing. #ontheroadagain #alexandria #egypt #tandemforculture #dictionaryofclouds

Part of my trip to Sudan should have been also in Darfur to exchange experiences and ideas, learning from each other with people there. But we had to postpone it to another time. Still with the magic of the virtual world @mayagadir organised a meeting with Sakina from Kuttum and Hamra from Alwaha and we had an interesting meeting thanks to #Sharezone support.
