That Milton Brooch sounds absolutely fascinating! The Anglo-Saxon craftsmanship and the intricate details like the cloisonné set garnets and beaded-filigree interlace make it truly remarkable. It's amazing how it was discovered in a cemetery in Dorset back in 1832. And it's cool to know that there's a similar brooch at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. @ashmoleanmuseum @casa_praise #Museum  #Art  #Culture  #History  #InstaHistory  #Ancient  #Object  #Archaeology  #Antiquities  #AncientHistory  #Oxford  #AngloSaxon  #Jewellery

Petrified iron ladder, somewhere in France. The ladder most likely underwent the process of calcification. Being laid on the limestone surroundings known to contain calcium carbonate, when the rainwater poured over, it dissolved the carbonate compounds contained in limestone and subsequently soaked the surface of the ladder in calcium and magnesium ions. Over time, the minerals solidified and petrified the ladder’s surface. Although researchers estimate the ladder is roughly 150 years old, it’s unclear how it became petrified in such a short span of time. Looking at it from another perspective, it shows how matter can undergo major and mysterious changes over the years that challenge our limited worldview and understanding of reality. Hi! My name is Maddy, and I am a junior (was a junior now I guess) at Washington University in St. Louis majoring in Ancient Studies with minors in Legal Studies and the Business of Social Impact and I am from New York. This program was without a doubt one of the best experiences in my life and will forever hold a special place in my heart. It was wonderful to be surrounded by such amazing people with similar passions. It’s been about a day and a half since move-out and I am already experiencing separation anxiety from the people and city. I loved getting out into the city both in class and on my own. ANCIENT NEOLITHIC SETTLEMENT UNVEILED IN SERBIA Archaeologists have unveiled the remains of a sprawling 7,000-year-old Neolithic settlement in Serbia, marking a significant discovery in the region's archaeological landscape. Covering approximately 32 acres near Jarkovac village, this settlement offers a remarkable glimpse into ancient farming communities. Led by researchers from Kiel University, the excavation revealed a complex network of ditches surrounding the site, indicating its substantial size and importance. Dating back to 5400 to 4400 B.C., the settlement belonged to the Vinča culture, known for pioneering sedentary farming practices in southeastern Europe. Among the findings are remnants of burnt houses and an array of artifacts, including finely crafted pottery, shedding light on daily life in this ancient community. Professor Martin Furholt highlights the significance of this discovery, emphasising its rarity in the Serbian Banat region. This remarkable find underscores the vast archaeological potential of Serbia, prompting further exploration to uncover the mysteries of its ancient past. Prehistoric humans in Brazil left mysterious carvings next to dinosaur footprints! 🦕 These petroglyphs, shaped like stars or circles, were found at the Serrote do Letreiro site in Paraíba. The carvings might indicate that ancient tribes found these footprints meaningful or interesting. 🤔 The petroglyphs' age is uncertain, but nearby burial sites suggest they could be between 9,400 and 2,620 years old. 🕰️ Isn't this amazing! 📌 Detaylar websitemizde! 📸 The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum _________________ A man in England weeding his garden has made a once-in-a-lifetime discovery: a stone inscribed with a 1,600-year-old message in a rare Irish alphabet. At first glance, the inscription looks like a series of vertical lines cut into the chocolate-bar-size stone. But these lines are actually an inscription in ogham, an alphabet used to write the early Irish language after the fourth century. Researchers partially translated the inscription as "Maldumcail/ S/ Lass." The first part relates to a person's name — "Mael Dumcail" — but that the meaning of the rest is not yet known. #arkeofili #arkeoloji #archaeology #ireland #irish #ogham #england

Rome’s warriors are legendary. The army that carved out the Empire is renowned as one of the finest fighting forces ever assembled. But who were the individuals that filled its ranks, and what motivated them to fight for Rome? A current exhibition at the British Museum allows the soldiers to speak for themselves, revealing a world where hope for the future could go hand in hand with extreme brutality. The weapons that these warriors wielded illustrate the lethal ingenuity that was invested in arms and armour. In the cover feature in the April/May issue of Current World Archaeology, we explored what was life really like for the individuals who became career soldiers, and how much we know about the tools of their trade. Who were the people who fought for Rome? Also in the same issue: the longest sword and largest mirror in ancient Japan; recent fieldwork in the United Arab Emirates; the clockwork gadgets where East meets West; the development of the monastery at Monte Cassino; and much more. #ancient #archaeology #mythology

A word I find myself turning to often in my talks and writing on prehistoric sites is ‘awe’ – the feeling of amazement, wonder and reverence that can emerge when you encounter something vast and powerful. Time and again, the emotion seems to me to be at the heart of what our ancestors were doing when they created sacred enclosures, tombs and other ritual sites. This is no more true than in the case of Toots (aka ‘King’s Stanley’) Long Barrow, on Selsey Common overlooking the town of Stroud in Gloucestershire. In terms of size, the mound – at just over 73m in length and 24m wide at its broadest point - is a large one by the standards of the area. But that’s not why the site always has an emotional impact on me. Rather, it’s the astounding view that unfolds from the spot, and the moment of connection with our Neolithic ancestors when you realize they felt the just same way about this extraordinary vista when they stood here 5,800 years ago, gazing out across the Severn Vale to the shadowy Malverns, Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons beyond. Recent neuro and psychological research into awe has concluded the emotion is an important ‘pathway to mental and physical health’; that it ‘fosters optimism, and helps reduce anxiety and depression’. Reviewing the literature confirmed what I’d discovered for myself eight years ago, when I started visiting barrows regularly: that being among them can, almost magically, bring about an emotional shift, alleviating the weight of whatever ails us through forging a more vivid connection with the land and those who inhabited it in the distant past. Great views can often do that too, and there are few greater in England than the one from Toots Long Barrow. The conjunction of barrow and vista is undeniable. But there’s another reason why our Neolithic ancestors built so many chambered tombs in this area. A clue lies in the name of the river flowing through the valley north of Selsey Common. "Ptolemy I Soter with his Sons" Ptolemy I Soter, a trusted general of Alexander the Great, rose to power after Alexander’s death and established himself as the ruler of Egypt in 305 BCE. During his reign, Ptolemy I had two notable sons who played significant roles in the dynasty’s history. Ptolemy II Philadelphus, the eldest son, succeeded his father as the ruler of Egypt. He was known for his patronage of the arts and sciences, as well as for expanding the kingdom’s influence through strategic alliances and trade agreements. Ptolemy II’s reign marked a period of prosperity and cultural flourishing in Egypt, earning him the epithet “Philadelphus,” meaning “brother-loving” in Greek. Ptolemy Keraunos, the younger son, had a more tumultuous path. After his father’s death, he sought power but faced challenges from his brother and other contenders. He briefly ruled as the king of Macedonia after assassinating Alexander’s son, but his reign was short-lived, as he was eventually defeated and killed in battle. #History #ArtHistory #Archaeology #CulturalHeritage #AncientCivilizations #WorldHistory #HistoricalArtifacts #Artifacts #HistoricalSites #Heritage #AncientHistory #AncientArt #HistoricalDiscovery #HistoricalPreservation #AncientCulture #HistoricalTreasures #ArchaeologicalDiscoveries #ArtisanCraftsmanship #CulturalArtifacts #HistoricalResearch #HellenisticArt #HellenisticSculpture #AncientSculpture #ClassicalArt

Fig.: a) Cazzuola in ferro da Londra (Regno Unito), età romana (da Humphreys 2021, p. 386, tav. 64, TRO02). #Strumenti #tools #artisanat #romancrafts #archeologiaromana #classicalarcheology #archaeology #research #artigianato #romanempire

Llech-y-Tribedd = stones of the three graves, Nevern, Pembrokeshire🌀🍄🌀A mushroom shaped Neolithic portal dolmen, dating to around 6,000 years ago. Made of local sandstone & pointing straight towards the mountain, Mynydd Carningli, a focal point for nearly all the tombs in this area, like Pentre Ifan, nearby. The capstone is covered in bubblegum lichen & has been carved into, with Victorian and medieval graffiti. Some of the symbols look like early pilgrim badge motifs, like the ones at Ty Illtyd, in the Brecon Beacons, which became a place of pilgrimage, with the carving of early Christian symbols on the lichen covered stones, with crosses, diamonds & lozenges 🌀🌀🌀 #Neolithic #archaeology #pembrokeshire #stoneclub #sirbenfro #megalithic #geology #graffiti @the.stone.club

Today 13th May in #ancientrome we have the 3rd and last #Lemuralia - after those of the 9th and 11th. All of these very private family days in which #temples were shut and #weddings not celebrated. A day to cleanse the household of evil and restless spirits. Walking barefoot, chanting ritual words, throwing black beans over your shoulder in hope the evil demons would take the beans rather than your own soul. During May we would also go to family graves and celebrate a meal together, bedecking it with roses (“Rosalia”) and/or violets (“Violaria”). Some time during May-midJune the military would celebrate their own regimental insignia with the Rosalia Signorum (we might post this 31st May). It is worth using this occasion to look around at our own modern customs. Christian civilisation adopted and transformed many of the ancient Roman religious customs, leaving relics and trails of them throughout the liturgical year. Madonnas at street corners in place of the Lares. Wine at the altar. The Easter stations of the cross similar to the Argei stations. The pontifex Maximus title for the high priest (the Pope) and so on. Many of the funerary symbols were also adopted: urns, altars, obelisks, broken columns and so on. Just as ancestral spirits lived on yet remained hidden for #roman families, Roman religious practices live on around us today.
