🏛️ Ancient Roman Mermaid 🏛️ Prompt for mermay thanks to @chloe.z.arts Thank you for all the recent support on my art! This is my third entry for #historicalmermay2024 I was inspired by the colors of the mediterranean sea for the rocky deep blue background. The tail is reminiscent of royalty. Red being a significant color of the roman empire as well as purple being a royal color. Her jewelry is inspired by the artifacts of gold found in the references slide of this post! I wanted to include the laurel crown in a unique way so I have her a tattoo! I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but many of my historical mermaids including this one, I try to model the look after what was the perceived beauty standards of the culture. For example, beautiful women in ancient rome were described as “fair haired”, light colored hair was seen as a rare feature to have. #ceasar #romanempire #ancientrome #rome #coloseum #historicalmermay #historicalmermaychallenge #historicalfashion #mediterranean #romanart #romanartifacts #mermay #mermay2024 #mermay

Dr. Vennarucci talks about a marble portrait bust of a young Roman girl, one of the many incredible pieces in the Greco-Roman collection at the University of Arkansas Museum Collections. This portrait most likely belonged to a tomb monument commemorating the death of this young girl. We can still see the remnants of red pigment in her hairs, reminding us that Roman sculpture was always painted. @uark.arthistory @uarkmuseum @uarkwllc #romanart #romanarchaeology #romanartifacts #portrait

Many believe the eerie figures found in Pompeii are petrified remains, but in reality, they are intricate plaster casts. These casts were formed by carefully pouring plaster into the spaces left by bodies that decayed under layers of volcanic ash, capturing a moment frozen in time. #pompeji #pompeii #volcanic #archaeology #romanartifacts #klassischearchäologie #unileipzig #ausgrabung #gipsabguss

A remarkable discovery beneath a Hotel | Back in 2009, during the construction of a new hotel in Antakya, Turkey, workers unearthed an extensive mosaic dating back over 2000 years to Roman and Hellenic times. Alongside, they found over 35,000 artifacts including glassware, coins, and jewelry. Archaeologists believe this intricate geometric mosaic once adorned the floor of a public building, spanning 1,050m² (9,000 square feet). The centerpiece is bordered by captivating animal 'paintings' in mosaic, depicting pairs of dogs, goats, deer, hares, and birds engaged in various activities. Despite segments being affected by earthquakes in 526 and 528 A.D., much of the original mosaic remains intact. The Asfuroğlu group, owners of the hotel, embraced the challenge of integrating this archaeological marvel into their blueprints. 📸Captured by: @saffetemretonguc #AntakyaMosaic #RomanArtifacts #ArchaeologicalDiscovery #HistoricalTreasure #HotelIntegration #ancienthistory

Roman ruins at Chateau Cotet! Their property runs along the Roman road through St Emillion. There are old stone tablets, Roman postal stones, chariot ruts in the stone, and an old Roman cistern they discovered that still works. They have to turn it on and off regularly to keep one of their vineyard plots from flooding! Historians are regularly visiting the property to learn more. #bordeaux #stemillion #romanroad #romanartifacts #romancistern #history #sommlife

I've cleaned up the knobbly #roman brooch a bit more, but I can't tell if this is corrosion or some kind of coloured detailing. The curve is more pronounced than any Polden Hill fibula I've found before, too, so I'm now wondering if it's a different type... Hod Hill, maybe? Also, octopus tentacle 🙂 #romandenarius #noktamakro #noktalegend #noktamacrolegend #nokta #noktametaldetectors #metaldetecting #metaldetectingfinds #metaldetectinguk #britishhistory #englandshistory #romancoins #romancoin #romanempire #romanartifacts

The inscription says: “Stop me so as not to flee, and return me to my lord Eviventium in the temple of Callixtus.” This was locked around the slave’s neck so there was no way to take it off. Slave Collars were devices forcibly worn by enslaved people in the Roman Republic. They were used to identify a person as a slave and to prevent escape, as well as to assist in identification of runaway slaves. In this way, slave collars were similar to slave brands, which were also used to identify slaves and their owners. Not all slaves wore collars, particularly if they had positions which were considered prestigious, such as Medicus or Ashur. #romanhistory #ancientrome #ancientromanhistory #ancientromanart #romanartifacts #historyofslavery #romanslave #classicalantiquity #archaeologists #archaelogy #classicalarchaeology #archaeologylover #archaeologylovers #archaeologylove #italianhistory #mediterraneanhistory #ironage #bronzeage #fascination #explore #explorepage
