😀👇𝐕𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝟐 𝐨𝐟 𝟐: 🏛️📌𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞: 𝐰𝐰𝐰.𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭.𝐜𝐨𝐦🚚📦 The emperor was impressed by their strength, and fighting ability, and soon some of them were integrated in the Hetaireia, the Imperial Bodyguard. The Kievan Rus and the Eastern Roman Empire continued a series of smaller conflicts which eventually came to a stop with the Rus-Roman Treaty of 907-911 under Leo VI. This treaty gave more freedom to Rus merchants across the empire. However it was not till Basil II, that these fierce warriors became a distinct and separate unit of the Imperial Bodyguards. This treaty was a result of the expedition led by the Rus prince Oleg. Basil II was 20 when he came to power and reigned for about 50 years. However, his reign would not be smooth sailing with the fear of rebellion always around the corner. Early into his reign, Basil II, faced open rebellion from Bardas Skleros and Bardas Phokas, both of which were members of an elite and wealthy background from Anatolia. Basil had managed during this conflicts to organise a major treaty with Prince Vladimir I of Kiev. The latter had occupied an important port in the Crimea but offered to give it back if Basil gave his sister, Anna, to marry Vladimir. In return it was said that Vladimir offered to convert to Christianity and provide 6,000 troops to Basil II. It has been argued the troops were undisciplined, drunken, violent men who Vladimir was happy to rid himself of, but they proved to be devastating in battle for the Eastern Empire. These troops titled the Varangians of the City gradually superseded the Exkoubitores of the Hetaireia as the bodyguards to the emperor. This proved a worthwhile for both sides, with the Varangians having their pay increased, and the Emperors of the Eastern Roman Empire had new devastating bodyguards. #romeisthelight #ancientrome #rome #history #ancienthistory #romanhistory #archaeology #romanempire #spqr #ancient #ukraine #ancientworld #ancientweapons #byzantium #middleages #russia #sweden #eternalcity #italygram #forum #varangian #varangianguard #venice #stmarksbasilica #constantinople

#TempleofFortuna #TandemReadalong with @headofzeus and @tandemcollectiveuk ✨️ ☆~Day One~☆ Bird 🐦 🐦‍⬛ 🦜 🦚 Here's my daily sections dog-earred and my annotating essentials at the ready. It's rare I annotate books that aren't for research, work, or uni, but as the Wolf Den Trilogy is based on actual historical events I've found myself annotating as I've read them with a classicists eye, either picking errors or oversights apart or praising Harper's attention to fact. I've started three days late for the #TempleofFortunaReadalong but hopefully my reading group will forgive me. Do you read historical fiction?

📚🏛️ Day 2 The Temple of Fortuna readalong I am a couple of days behind on my reading but already loving being back in Amara's world. For today's challenge I have chosen to answer the question... Amara has had to make difficult decisions in order to seek safety and power. What do you think will win out at the end, her heart or her head? Oh tough one this one. At the moment I am thinking her head will win out in the end but I am really hoping her heart will. To have a life filled with your child and the love of your life is a life well lived however Amara doesn't live in current times, she lives in her different times in Ancient Rome and Pompeii, she's a woman and has a female daughter who has no rights and slavery and corruption is commonplace. If I had to choose a safe life, free from slavery, prostitution and abject poverty for my child over the alternative as much as it would tear me apart into minute pieces, I would sacrifice everything for them to have a safe life. 📌📌📌 CONTINUATE LA LETTURA SUL NOSTRO SITO ASSONANZE.COM #libro #libri #lettura #letture #letteratura #book #books #bookbookbook #literature #classic #classicliterature #latino #ancientrome #instabook #instabooks #bookstagram #bookstagrammer

Her müzenin bahçesinde kafe bulunuyor.

Today 12th May in Ancient Rome Trajan inaugurated his famous and timeless column standing in his Forum between multi story libraries of Roman and Greek texts. Walking up the various floors allowed visitors to inspect up close the marvellous detail and sculpture. We share some up close examples taken from a cast at the Victoria and Albert museum in London. The detail is truly amazing. Trajan's Column was erected in Rome in 113 AD, commemorating Emperor Trajan's victory in the Dacian Wars. It stands as a towering testament to Roman military might, engineering prowess and architecture- featuring a continuous spiral frieze depicting scenes from the campaign. The monumentalising structure of the column is in itself a truly Roman innovation. The inscription on the base of the column not only celebrates Trajan's conquest but is also notable for its broadly appreciated perfection of lettering, defining the standard letter forms of the Latin alphabet, influencing typography design for centuries to come. It lies at the foundation of letter forms such as Trajan and the later Times New Roman. It truly echoes through the ages. #History #Rome #TrajanColumn #AncientRome #ArtAndHistory #ImperoRomano #traiano #RomanCulture

PHAEDRA IN THE TEATRO GRECO My tour of ‘Magna Graeca’ - Ancient Greek sites in Sicily began with the first night of Euripides’ Phaedra (or Fedra in Italian) in the Teatro Greco. It was first built in the 5th century BC, rebuilt in the 3rd century BC and renovated again in the Roman period. It is really incredible to be watching a performance with 6000 others, where people have watched performances for thousands of years. Since 1914, it has been home to an annual two-month-long Greek theatre festival dedicated to the works of Aristophanes, Sophocles, Euripides, Aeschylus and other classical masters and now run by the @fondazione_inda . The production of Fedra is directed by @paulcurranopera with a set and costumes by Gary McCann @gmtheatredesign - afterwards we had a party in the Orecchio di Dionisio (“Ear of Dionysius”), a stone quarry or latomìe, also used as prison in ancient times. The Greek theatre has a caves, or enclosure that is one of the largest ever built by the ancient Greeks: it has 67 rows, divided into nine sections with eight aisles. Only traces of the scene and the orchestra remain. The edifice (still used today) was modified by the Romans, who adapted it to their different style of spectacles, including also circus games.

The Short Clarity of Life without Worry Hey my loves, how are you? I was on a little trip yesterday with my family and we went to the Sanssouci Park. We visited the palace of Frederick the Great, admired the beautiful building and walked then trough the incredible park (at least a bit of it because this one is huge!). We saw the Tea House which actually was a Party House back in the day and was never used once for a tea ceremony. After that we visited the Orangerie which was such a beautiful building as well. It was build later than the castle, in the 1800 and the castle in the 1700. I really loved the day yesterday, the weather was warm enough in the sun to walk around without a jacket and I really enjoyed my surroundings. Hopefully I’ll remember that I was there and am not forgetting it like I did the last two times… 😅 Have you ever visited the Sanssouci park or did you even went inside the castle? Also the k-drama Queen of Tears had filmed some scenes there and let me tell you my jaw dropped when I saw that. - #feyres_bookworld #bookstagram #poem #poems #poetry #sanssouci #sanssoucipalace #outside #castle #palace #potsdam #royalty #outsidetrip #greekmythology #romenmythology #ancientrome

📷 ArchaeoHistories #arqueologia #antiguaroma #pompeya Domus of Marcus Lucretius Fronto (Pompeii, Italy). Regium V of Pompeii. In the atrium of the domus, the marble pool of the impluvium and the table with feet shaped like lion's claws stand out. The decoration of the walls is also notable, with frescoes in black and yellow colors. Statue of a young woman Roman, about 50 BC - 50 AD The style of the statue imitates Greek sculptures made 500 years earlier. It may have been a copy of a statue of the Roman goddess Diana with both arms stretched out. The lower arms were lost in the past and were later replaced with the mirror and jug seen today. In the shadow of ancient Rome, where myth mingled freely with the march of legions, there existed a hidden grove guarded by the Nymphs of Diana. Among these otherworldly beings was Livia, a nymph with eyes like the forest depths and a spirit as untamed as the wind. One fateful day, a weary soldier, Marius, stumbled upon this secret haven, escaping the clutches of an enemy ambush. Unseen paths guided by whispers of fate led him to Livia. Despite the edicts of both their worlds, they forged an unspoken bond, a harmony between the supernatural and the human, the historical and the mythical. Their tale became whispered among bards and scribes, blending the truths of Rome’s relentless expansion with the enchantments of an older, wilder world. As centuries faded, the legend of Marius and Livia wove through the fabric of history, a testament to the enduring power of unforeseen love, standing resilient amidst the relentless rivers of time. #AncientRome #MythAndLegend #ForbiddenLove #WTSdArt

Dare I say the ancient Romans valued different themes than those of ourselves. Perhaps our description would read: 'indulgence, convenience and individualism: UberEats exemplified all the Moderns' favourite themes.' Maybe I am being a little harsh and cynical. We have many fine things to value in our own culture. What are the things you value most in our culture? Let us know in the comments! #rome #empire #historyfacts Stay tuned! "Wrath Unleashed: The Bar Kokhba Revolt, The last Jewish uprising against Rome, part 1)” As Rome recovered swiftly once more after the successful crushing of the last Jewish uprising, this would be cut short due to the rise of the biggest Jewish revolt ever seen in Rome. The Bar Kochba Revolt (132–136 AD) was the third and final war between the Jewish people and the Roman Empire. It followed a long period of tension and violence, marked by the first Jewish uprising of 66-70 AD, which ended with the destruction of the Second Temple, and the Kitos War (115-117 AD). In many ways, the Bar Kochba Revolt differed markedly from its predecessors. For the first time, the Jews presented a united front against Roman forces and fought underneath a single charismatic leader, the eponymous Simon Bar Kochba (also given as Shimon Bar-Cochba, Bar Kokhba, Ben-Cozba, Cosiba or Coziba). It was marked as well by strong religious passions, with many apparently believing that Bar Kochba was the promised messiah who would lead the Jewish people to final victory against their enemies. "In its early stages, the revolt surged with surprising success, potentially resulting in the annihilation of a Roman legion and even the recapture of Jerusalem. The rebels likely controlled significant swathes of ancient Judea. However, the Romans swiftly countered with a ruthless scorched-earth campaign, decimating the rebellion and leaving devastation in their wake. The conflict tore apart Judean society, leading to profound demographic shifts and the crushing of national aspirations. The majority of the Jewish populace faced death, enslavement, or exile, marking a tragic turning point. It would take centuries, until the advent of the Zionist movement and the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, for the Jewish people to reclaim their nationalistic political sovereignty." Unlike the revolt of 66 AD, the historical sources on the Bar Kochba Revolt are scanty at best. The war had no chronicler such as Josephus Flavius, at least none whose work has survived. The primary non-Jewish sources are an epitome of Cassius Dio's Roman History and a handful of lines-continued ⬇️

Jinete Sword of Boabdil (Muhammad XII) Last Nasarid Emir of Granada c. 1400 97 cm It is a jineta sword , a type of genuinely Nasrid production sword introduced in the 'Muslim' peninsula by the zenati Berber tribe. Muhammad XII was the son of Abu l-Hasan Ali, Sultan of the Emirate of Granada whom he succeeded in 1482, as a result of both court intrigue and unrest amongst the population at large. . .
