Love this shot of a Snowy Egret out in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. When I worked in Everglades National Park in Florida, I used to call them the "birds with the golden slippers". This one still had hints of breeding plumage--those lighter, wispy feathers hanging down in a few places. Such a breathtakingly lovely creature. 🧜‍♀️Ancient Roman Mermaid 🧜‍♀️ (swipe to see a close up) today’s #historicalmermay2024 prompt is Ancient Rome! Ancient Rome fashion was inspired by Etruscan and Greek civilizations. It’s from these two cultures that the Romans inherited their love of draped garments. They were also very careful about the way they dressed and things like the color or the length of a toga had plenty of unwritten rules. They even had laws that regulated what types of clothes certain social classes could wear. This Roman mermaid is wearing a stola, a staple garment for women in Ancient Rome. Like most stola, hers is sleeveless, and worn over a tunica, a light inner shirt. Her stola is fastened at the shoulders, with a belt around the waist. The stola could also be worn with two belts. The stola served an important social function in Ancient Rome! It could only be worn by married women, which means that our little mermaid is married 👀 Along with her stola, she is wearing a palla, a large rectangular piece of cloth that was wrapped wrapped around the body. It was usually made of wool, though there were also pallas made out of linen, cotton, or even silk for the wealthiest. While pallas could be plain, most women had colorful pallas with patterns, like the one our mermaid is wearing! And if you’re wondering how she’s reading a scroll underwater…. 🤔 magic, of course ✨🧜‍♀️ What would you name her? Let me know in the comments 💙 . #historicalmermay2024 #historicalmermay #mermay #mermay2024 #historicalfashion #fashionhistory #historicalcostuming #ancientrome #ancientromefashion #ancientromeclothing #ancientromecostime #antiquefashion #historicalcostume #historicalcostuming #historyoffashion #historicalcostumes #ancientromeera #ancientromandress #ancientromehistory

Then and Now: Bethlehem . Bethlehem was mentioned around 1350 BC in the Tell al-Amarna letters, from the Egyptian governor of Palestine to the Pharaoh Amenhotep III. It was depicted as an important staging and rest stop for travelers from Syria and Palestine going to Egypt. The letters also signify that it was a border city of mid-Palestine and an outpost looking out towards the desert. The Philistines had a garrison stationed in Bethlehem because it was a strong strategic point. They entered the land of the Canaanites, mingled with its people and settled in the southern coasts between Jaffa and Gaza. The Philistines had achieved military supremacy over the greater part of the country around 1200 BC, and called it Palestine. . #ancientcity #ancientromehistory #thenandnow #ancient #archeology #history #palestine #bethlehem #bible

(Defying the odds-The legendary siege of Masada and the last stand of Jewish rebels, part 2) When the Romans had finally breached the fortress, they had discovered that its 960 inhabitants had committed mass suicide, preferring death at their own hands to slavery or execution. Jewish historian Josephus claimed to have been given a full account of the siege by two women who survived by hiding inside a drain. The witnesses claimed that, because suicide was against Jewish belief, the Sicarii had drawn lots to kill each other, with the last man the only one to take his own life. Masada was the last act of the Jewish war. The Jews became scattered into areas around the Mediterranean with many thousands being sold into slavery. According to Josephus: “it [was] by the will of God, and by necessity, that [they, the Sicarrii] are to die” and that the defenders drew lots and killed each other in turn, down to the last man (as Judaism prohibits suicide). He further stated that their leader, Eleazar ben Ya’ir’s, ordered all provisions to be destroyed, to demonstrate to the Romans that they defiantly chose death over slavery. According to Shaye Cohen, archaeology shows that Josephus' account is "incomplete and inaccurate" and contradicted by the "skeletons in the cave, and the numerous separate fires". Cohen speculates that "some Jews killed themselves, some fought to the death, and some attempted to hide and escape. The Romans were in no mood to take prisoners and massacred all whom they found." Masada was last occupied during the Byzantine period, when a small church was established at the site. The church was part of a monastic settlement identified with the monastery of Marda known from hagiographical literature. This identification is generally accepted by researchers. The Aramaic common noun marda, "fortress", corresponds in meaning to the Greek name of another desert monastery of the time, Kastellion, and is used to describe that site in the vita (biography) of St Sabbas, but it is used as a proper name only for the monastery at Masada, as can be seen from the vita of St Euthymius.

Rome's ancient Tabularium is one of my favorite places in the Eternal City. Now a part of the Capitoline Museum, visitors are given a stunning view of the Forum Romanum from beneath the darkened archways, visible in this photo. The Tabularium was built in the 70's BC, during the final years of the Roman Republic. It's a real testimony to the enduring strength of Roman architecture and building skills.

Egyptian Wood Mummy Mask, New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, 1550-1295 BC. This piece was sold in 2016 for £116,500 to a private collector. A three-thousand year old finely carved wooden mask, adorned with a tripartite wig. The craftmanship suggests it was made of a high status person. Its straight nose and small mouth, the large almond-shaped eyes inlaid with stone and obsidian are immaculately preserved and represent the pinnacle of Egyptian society.

#romanlegions #romanempire #marcusaurelius #römerstadt #regensburg #romancity #ancientromanempire #ancientromehistory #archeology #history #ancientromanhistory

I took this mosaic photo while in Alexandria, Egypt, researching my Antonius Trilogy. Sadly, not much is left of "ancient" Alexandria. Two-thousand years of earthquakes, tsunamis, and war has pretty much obliterated most traces of Antony and Cleopatra's world. However, this mosaic of a dog and a strange looking container was discovered in the early 21st century while construction on the NEW Library of Alexandria was occurring. It is such a vibrant piece and dates from the time of Cleopatra--the last Pharoah.
