#MithologyMonday. Oenone was a nymph and daugther of the river god Cebren. She lived on the slopes of Mount Ida where Apollo taught her the medical art and the use of healing herbs. By chance she met Paris of Troy while he still was a shepherd, because his parents sent him to Mount Ida due to the prophecy saying that Paris would have been the reason of the destruction of Troy. They married but then Paris left her for Helen. The couple had a son Corythus who fought with the Greeks in the Trojan War, and the myth says that Paris killed his own son because he did not recognize him. Meanwhile Oenon secluded herself on Mount Ida, and she refused to cure Paris when he came to her mortally wounded. But, when he died, she killed herself out of guilt. 🇬🇧 ON THIS DAY IN ROME On May 13th 609 AD (day of the All Saints celebration, later moved to November 1st) Pope Bonifacius IV solemny consecrates the Pantheon, given to him by the Emperor Foca, transforming it from a pagan temple to the Church of St. Mary ad Martyres. According to the reports of the time, full of superstition, a lot of devils come out from the underground to fly away through the oculus, the large circular hole at the tope of the dome. #pantheon #romeguides #passeggiatedomenicali #romeguidestours #leggendediroma #santamariadmartyres #chiesediroma #piazzadellarotonda #romanhistory #travel #traveladdict #instaart #travelphotography #curiosità #cityviews #visiteguidate #middleages #romamia #takeawalk #quantoseibellaroma #iloverome #visitroma #instarome #caputmundi #byfoot #likealocal #romacapitale #guidedtours #rome #romabella

Newest addition to my ancient coins is this Roman coin in the Greek denomination of a tetradrachm. Attributed to being minted between 98-117AD in Antioch, under emporer Trajan. Known as one of the 5 good emporers, Trajan bridged the first and second centuries and helped bring in a period of almost unparalleled imperial stability, characterized by cultural growth. His reign was noted for public projects that benefited the populace such as improving road systems, constructing aqueducts and public bath houses, and extending the Port of Ostia. He was also a highly successful general resulting in the Roman Empire reaching its greatest size up to that date. He was highly accepted by both the senate and his military, casting a long shadow over the history of the empire with the senate sometimes wishing new emporers "to be more fortunate than Augustus, be better than Trajan." Happy to have picked up my first coin under this emporer from @michaelbezayiff. #romanempire #coins #tetradrachm #silvercoins #numismatics #romancoins #trajan #Antioch #coincollecting #5goodemperors #greekcoins #coinshow #imperialrome #romansilver #romanhistory #romanconquest #emporertrajan

When Geoffroi de Charny wrote his classic treatise on chivalry in the 14th century, he aimed to spark a revival in France. The knights of his country had lost their way and were paying for it with repeated defeats at the hands of the English. Charny’s vision for the revival did not involve extended training in etiquette—but instead he urged his countrymen to train and strive and recommit to physical excellence (and to honor and faith). #ig_rome #roman #romanempire #romanity #whatif #comics #daily #unlimitedrome #romanhistory #history #historical #art

🇬🇧 AENEAS FLEEING TROY The depiction of this episode of the story of Aeneas is unique in the production of the Italian painter Federico Barocci, who was constantly engaged with religious subjects. In the painting, there are allusions in the painting to two famous artists from Urbino (birthplace of the painter): Raphael (the influence of the fresco portraying the Fire in the Borgo) and Donato Bramante (the presence in the background of the Tempietto at ST. Peter in Montorio). Miserable, melancholic and short-tempered man, Barocci worked in Rome just for a short time, preferring to return back to Urbino in 1565, being persuaded that everyone in Rome was trying to poison him. #galleriaborghese #romeguides #passeggiatedomenicali #romeguidestours #borghesegallery #federicobarocci #enea #paintings #romanhistory #travel #traveladdict #instaart #travelphotography #curiosità #cityviews #visiteguidate #art #romamia #takeawalk #quantoseibellaroma #iloverome #visitroma #instarome #caputmundi #byfoot #likealocal #romacapitale #guidedtours #rome #romabella

Lovely afternoon @berrycrofthub, a refresher course (for me) in medieval #distaff spinning. I brought my own distaves since I want especially to become more confident for spinning with this type of distaff on heritage sites. That said, I 'cheated' a bit by using a French-style spindle -- but I promise I do know how to spin with a straight/smooth shaft hand-spindle, too! I chose to use my French spindle because I can use it with ease, and I wanted to be able to focus on the distaff rather than worrying about the spindle and that. @granny.jane @andrzejnaczynskiwoodturner #handspinning #handspindle #medievalhistory #textiles #livinghistory #crafts #wool #fibres #middleages #Romanhistory #women #womenswork #womenshistory

Subject: Emperor Titus, the Benevolent Successor of Vespasian Introduction: Introduce Titus as the successor of Vespasian, who inherited a stabilizing empire and was known for his generosity and popular rule. Highlight his completion of the Colosseum, which his father had initiated, and his swift humanitarian response to natural disasters during his reign. Myth: Titus is often idealized as the 'darling of the human race,' a title given by his contemporaries that reflected his immense popularity. Myths surrounding his rule emphasize his supposed reluctance to execute even a single person, and stories tell of him lamenting days when he had not done a good deed. Fact: While Titus was indeed popular and known for his benevolent acts, such as providing relief following the Vesuvius eruption and a great fire in Rome, his reign was not without challenges. He faced several natural disasters and political intrigues, managing them with a mix of clemency and pragmatism that characterized his brief but impactful rule. Conclusion: Titus's legacy as a benevolent emperor raises questions about the impact of personal virtue on public governance. How does the character of a leader influence their reign and historical memory? Titus's rule provides a compelling case study on the power of generosity and clemency in leadership. The Kievan Rus and the Eastern Roman Empire continued a series of smaller conflicts which eventually came to a stop with the Rus-Roman Treaty of 907-911 under Leo VI. This treaty gave more freedom to Rus merchants across the empire. However it was not till Basil II, that these fierce warriors became a distinct and separate unit of the Imperial Bodyguards. This treaty was a result of the expedition led by the Rus prince Oleg. Basil II was 20 when he came to power and reigned for about 50 years. However, his reign would not be smooth sailing with the fear of rebellion always around the corner. Early into his reign, Basil II, faced open rebellion from Bardas Skleros and Bardas Phokas, both of which were members of an elite and wealthy background from Anatolia. Basil had managed during this conflicts to organise a major treaty with Prince Vladimir I of Kiev. The latter had occupied an important port in the Crimea but offered to give it back if Basil gave his sister, Anna, to marry Vladimir. In return it was said that Vladimir offered to convert to Christianity and provide 6,000 troops to Basil II. It has been argued the troops were undisciplined, drunken, violent men who Vladimir was happy to rid himself of, but they proved to be devastating in battle for the Eastern Empire. These troops titled the Varangians of the City gradually superseded the Exkoubitores of the Hetaireia as the bodyguards to the emperor. This proved a worthwhile for both sides, with the Varangians having their pay increased, and the Emperors of the Eastern Roman Empire had new devastating bodyguards. #romeisthelight #ancientrome #rome #history #ancienthistory #romanhistory #archaeology #romanempire #spqr #ancient #ukraine #ancientworld #ancientweapons #byzantium #middleages #russia #sweden #eternalcity #italygram #forum #varangian #varangianguard #venice #stmarksbasilica #constantinople

Happy #InternationalNursesDay! 🎉 Did you know the term "nurse" originates from the Latin word nutrire, meaning to suckle? Initially referring to a wet-nurse, by the late 16th century, it evolved to mean someone who cares for the sick. 🏥 The first documents mentioning nursing as a profession date back to around 300 CE during the Roman Empire, which aimed to build a hospital in every town under its rule, significantly boosting the demand for nurses. Thank you to all the nurses for your dedication and hard work! Your role in healthcare is truly invaluable. 🇬🇧 ST. PETER Inside of the Basilica of St. John in Lateran, among the colossal statues of the Apostles decorating the central nave, stands out the huge marble St. Peter sculpted by the late baaroque French artist Pierre-Étienne Monnot. Very famous as a restorer too, Monnot worked on a marble chest (later recognized as a part of a copy of the famous Mirone's Discus Thrower) transforming it in a fallen gladiator resting on his arm. PAX - First Edition Signed by Tom Holland @holland_tom_six The definitive history of Rome’s golden age – antiquity’s ultimate superpower at the pinnacle of its greatness The Pax Romana has long been revered as a golden age. At its peak, the Roman Empire stretched from Scotland to Arabia, and contained perhaps a quarter of humanity. It was the wealthiest and most formidable state the world had yet seen. Beginning in 69AD, a year that saw four Caesars in succession rule the empire, and ending some seven decades later with the death of Hadrian, Pax presents a dazzling history of Rome at the height of its power. From the gilded capital to realms beyond the frontier, historian Tom Holland portrays the Roman Empire in all its predatory glory. Vivid scene follows vivid scene: the destruction of Jerusalem and Pompeii, the building of the Colosseum and Hadrian’s Wall, the conquests of Trajan. Vividly sketching the lives of Romans both ordinary and spectacular, from slaves to emperors, Holland demonstrates how Roman peace was the fruit of unprecedented military violence. A stunning portrait of Rome’s glory days, this is the epic history of the pax Romana. #history #roman #empire #roma #goldenage #book #books #historybooks #learning #war #battle #army #military #romanhistory #pax #tomholland #historian #signed #booksbooksbooks

→→ 📸 La Turbie is a delightful medieval village high on a hilltop between Nice and Monaco along the French Riviera. Its elevated position provides breathtaking panoramic vistas - the sparkling Mediterranean on one side and the rugged alpine foothills on the other. Wandering the winding streets lined with old stone buildings evokes the quintessential Provençal charm. However, La Turbie’s true claim to fame is the Trophy of the Alps monument towering over the village. This remarkably well-preserved Roman relic, constructed in 6 BC, was built to commemorate the emperor Augustus’ victory over the Alpine tribes. The 165-foot carved stone basement stands as an awe-inspiring reminder of ancient Rome’s glory days. Strolling through La Turbie’s picturesque alleyways and suddenly encountering this imposing historical treasure is a truly unique experience. If you’re looking for a taste of provincial French life coupled with an extraordinary archaeological marvel, La Turbie is a wonderful destination. #laturbie #romanhistory #frenchvillage

🇬🇧 ON THIS DAY IN ROME On May 12th 113 AD. as indicated in the Fasti Ostienses, the Trajan's Forum is dedicated again and the Trajan Column is inaugurated. The Column is the monument erected by the emperor Trajan to celebrate the conquest of the Dacian region, evoking on the frieze all the highlights of that territorial expansion. The spectacular frieze, that could be "unrolled" forming a carpet more than 200 metres long and that shows more than 2500 figures, represents a very high-quality artistic example of the Imperial Roman decoration. #colonnatraiana #romeguides #passeggiatedomenicali #romeguidestours #trajancolumn #foroditraiano #trajanforum #ancienthistory #romanhistory #travel #traveladdict #instaart #travelphotography #curiosità #cityviews #visiteguidate #romanempire #romamia #takeawalk #quantoseibellaroma #iloverome #visitroma #instarome #caputmundi #byfoot #likealocal #romacapitale #guidedtours #rome #romabella

"Wrath Unleashed: The Bar Kokhba Revolt, The last Jewish uprising against Rome, part 1)” As Rome recovered swiftly once more after the successful crushing of the last Jewish uprising, this would be cut short due to the rise of the biggest Jewish revolt ever seen in Rome. The Bar Kochba Revolt (132–136 AD) was the third and final war between the Jewish people and the Roman Empire. It followed a long period of tension and violence, marked by the first Jewish uprising of 66-70 AD, which ended with the destruction of the Second Temple, and the Kitos War (115-117 AD). In many ways, the Bar Kochba Revolt differed markedly from its predecessors. For the first time, the Jews presented a united front against Roman forces and fought underneath a single charismatic leader, the eponymous Simon Bar Kochba (also given as Shimon Bar-Cochba, Bar Kokhba, Ben-Cozba, Cosiba or Coziba). It was marked as well by strong religious passions, with many apparently believing that Bar Kochba was the promised messiah who would lead the Jewish people to final victory against their enemies. "In its early stages, the revolt surged with surprising success, potentially resulting in the annihilation of a Roman legion and even the recapture of Jerusalem. The rebels likely controlled significant swathes of ancient Judea. However, the Romans swiftly countered with a ruthless scorched-earth campaign, decimating the rebellion and leaving devastation in their wake. The conflict tore apart Judean society, leading to profound demographic shifts and the crushing of national aspirations. The majority of the Jewish populace faced death, enslavement, or exile, marking a tragic turning point. It would take centuries, until the advent of the Zionist movement and the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, for the Jewish people to reclaim their nationalistic political sovereignty." Unlike the revolt of 66 AD, the historical sources on the Bar Kochba Revolt are scanty at best. The war had no chronicler such as Josephus Flavius, at least none whose work has survived. The primary non-Jewish sources are an epitome of Cassius Dio's Roman History and a handful of lines-continued ⬇️

💠On this day (May 11) in Byzantine History * 🏛️330- On this day 1,694 years ago, the Eastern Roman capital Constantinople is consecrated by Emperor Constantine I the Great (r. 306-337) as the Roman Empire's new capital. After 6 years of intensive construction, the former Ancient Greek port city of Byzantion founded in the 7th century BC is transformed into an imperial capital also known as "New Rome". It would be the capital of the Byzantine Empire for the next 1,123 years- except for the time the Crusaders took it from 1204-1261- and also to be the capital of the Ottoman Empire after its conquest by them in 1453. * 👑482- On this day was born Flavius Petrus Sabbatius who would be Emperor Justinian I the Great (r. 527-565), possibly the most influential Byzantine emperor. Although born to a family of peasants in the Balkans, Petrus thanks to his uncle Justin being in the imperial army would have the chance to have the best education and follow in his uncle's footsteps in being part of the imperial army and government allowing him to rise up the ranks eventually to the imperial the throne in 527. * 💀912- On this day, Byzantine emperor Leo VI the Wise (r. 886-912) dies of illness after a reign that saw a mix of military failures- such as the fall of Byzantine Sicily to the Arabs in 902 and sack of Thessaloniki by the Arabs in 904- and successes. Leo VI was best remembered for being a scholar emperor who published a number of literary works including the empire's updated code of laws known as the "Basilika", the Book of the Eparch, and the military manual known as the "Taktika". Shortly before his death, Leo got word of the failure of his naval expedition to recapture the island of Crete from Arab pirates. * 🖼️Images: Emperor Leo VI mosaic in the Hagia Sophia (top left), Byzantine chi-rho flag (top right), Emperor Justinian I the Great (bottom left), Byzantine Constantinople (bottom right).

"You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength." This statement, authored by Marcus Aurelius, stands as one of the pillars of Stoic philosophy. It suggests that our strength lies in our ability to control our own minds, rather than in manipulating external events. It means that we cannot change what happens around us, but we can change our thoughts and reactions to those events. When we understand this, we begin to harness our inner strength to deal with difficulties and achieve goals, even when external conditions are not favorable. Thus, the sentence directs us towards accepting reality and using internal resources to succeed and overcome obstacles. #MarcusAurelius #Stoicism #Philosophy #Emperor #Meditations #Wisdom #SelfImprovement #RomanEmpire #Inspiration #LifeReflections #AncientWisdom #ClassicalPhilosophy #Mindfulness #InnerStrength #PersonalGrowth #HistoricalFigures #Leadership #Reflections #LifeLessons #RomanHistory

The Colossus of Constantine reconstructed! https://asebastiani.com/2024/05/01/a-colossal-awe/ The experience of encountering the reconstructed Colossus of Constantine, prominently displayed within the verdant environs of Palazzo Caffarelli in Rome, evokes a profound sense of astonishment. Immersed within this setting, one is transported to a realm where the meticulously crafted proportions faithfully capture the essence of the grandeur sought during the 4th century. It is worth noting that the original intent behind its creation was to grace the interior of the Basilica of Maxentius, thereby underscoring its monumental significance. The sheer magnificence of the statue commands awe and reverence, accentuated by the deliberate selection of its placement. Positioned discreetly away from the throngs of tourists, it beckons the discerning observer to engage in a nuanced interplay of perspectives. Initially appearing diminutive in the distance, the Colossus gradually asserts its dominance as one draws near, ultimately dominating the expanse of the garden and captivating the gaze of the beholder. This installation represents a meticulously orchestrated endeavor, underscored by its temporal nature, scheduled to endure until the end of 2025. Notably, the striking resemblance between Constantine and the iconic Zeus of Olympia serves as a poignant reminder of an era characterized by profound ideological upheavals poised to redefine the very fabric of societal norms and structures. #ColossusOfConstantine #PalazzoCaffarelli #RomanSculpture #AncientArt #RomanEmpire #BasilicaOfMaxentius #HistoricalMonument #ArtHistory #AncientRome #ConstantineTheGreat #HistoricalSculpture #RomanArchitecture #SculptureGarden #ArtInstallation #TravelRome #RomanHistory #CulturalHeritage #HistoricalSites #AncientWonders #ArtAppreciation #ZeusOfOlympia #IconicArt #SocietalNorms #HistoricalPerspectives #MonumentalArt #TimelessBeauty #aɴᴄɪᴇɴᴛcᴜʟᴛᴜʀᴇ
