On This Day In 1980, FRIDAY THE 13TH was released in theaters. The film earned $39,754,601 at the domestic box office on a budget of $550,000. Its worldwide gross was $59,754,601. Victor Miller admitted that he was purposely riding the success of John Carpenter's Halloween (1978). Director Sean S. Cunningham even approached Halloween producer Irwin Yablans to produce the film, but he declined, as he wasn't interested in doing another horror movie. Composer Harry Manfredini has said that contrary to popular belief, the famous "Chi, chi, chi, ha, ha, ha" in the film's score is actually "Ki, ki, ki, ma, ma, ma." It is meant to resemble Jason's voice saying "Kill, kill, kill, mom, mom, mom" in Mrs. Voorhees's mind. It was inspired by the scene in which Pamela Voorhees suffers from schizophrenia and chants, "Get her, mommy! Kill her!" Manfredini created the effect by speaking the syllables "ki" and "ma" into a microphone running through a delay effect. (Facts Provided By IMDB)

#Onthisday in 1942, pioneer sports broadcaster Graham McNamee died in New York City. McNamee is credited as the creator of the play-by-play and was the grandson of Irish immigrants. McNamee was born on July 10th, 1888, in Washington, D.C., where his father was a legal advisor to a member of President Cleveland’s cabinet. McNamee studied music while working for the railroad and then as a salesman. He had hopes of becoming an opera singer and came to New York to pursue music seriously. By 1923, he was struggling to find work as a singer and walked into the WEAF radio station while on lunch break during jury duty. He was given an audition as a broadcaster and got a job at the station. He began his career as a sports broadcaster in August, announcing the Harry Greb-Johnny Wilson championship fight. He was working alongside sportswriter Grantland Rice for the 1923 Fall Classic between the Yankees and Giants when Rice walked off the broadcast, leaving McNamee on air alone. McNamee began describing the events of the game in real time, beginning with what would become his standard greeting, “How do you do, ladies and gentlemen of the radio audience?” He quickly gathered fans and received thousands of positive letters after announcing the Jack Dempsey-Luis Firpo bout in September. McNamee's style was popular, though he was known to make mistakes and offer commentary outside the events of a game. He announced the world series in 1923 and would continue to do so until 1934. In 1927, he covered NBC’s first coast-to-coast broadcast of the Rose Bowl. Well known for his sports broadcasts, McNamee covered a range of events, with his voice announcing several high-profile broadcasts over the years. In 1927, he announced Charles Lindbergh’s famous transatlantic flight from New York to Paris. He covered Democratic and Republican national conventions as well as presidential inaugurations. In the 1930s he began voicing newsreels while continuing on the radio. McNamee was inducted into the American Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame in 1984 and was given the Baseball Hall of Fame's Frick Award in 2016 for his contributions to the origin of baseball broadcasting.

D.V. #Juventus #Baggio #Onthisday

May 9, 1957: Elvis had a recording session at Radio Recorders in Hollywood at 7000 Santa Monica Blvd to complete soundtrack recording of “Jailhouse Rock.” RCA Victor, built Radio Recorders in 1928. Many notable musicians are reported to have been recorded in the studio include Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Jimmie Rodgers, Louis Armstrong, Mario Lanza, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Paul Frees and The Carpenters among others. In its prime, the studio was known as the best recording facility in Los Angeles. November 8, 1957: Jailhouse Rock, opened in theaters nationwide. Jailhouse Rock, was directed by Richard Thorpe, and it was produced by Pandro S. Berman. Elvis' costars were Judy Tyler, Mickey Shaughnessy, Vaughn Taylor, and Jennifer Holden. The production of Jailhouse Rock, began on May 13, 1957, and concluded on June 17th of that year. The dance sequence to the film's title song "Jailhouse Rock" is often cited as "Elvis' greatest moment on screen.” The film peaked at number 3 on the Variety box office chart, and reached number 14 in the year's box office totals, grossing $4 million. Jailhouse Rock, was Elvis' third film and his first for MGM. It was filmed at the MGM studios in Culver City, California. Filmed in black-and-white, the film was the first production that MGM filmed with the recently developed 35 mm anamorphic lens by Panavision. The film was originally titled The Hard Way, which was changed to Jailhouse Kid, before MGM finally settled on Jailhouse Rock. Jailhouse Rock, was Judy Tyler's last film; two weeks after shooting was completed, she died in an automobile accident that also killed her husband. Elvis, moved by the death of his co-star, did not attend the film premiere. #elvis #elvispresley #graceland #elvisaaronpresley #presley #elvispresleyfans #theking #music #elvispresleyfansofnashville #elvisforever #rocknroll #elvisfan #tcb #kingofrockandroll #tcb #rockandroll #elvistheking #elvishistory #musichistory #onthisday Elvis Presley fans of Nashville ⚡️ An official Elvis fan club approved by Graceland Est 2011 Facebook EPNashvilleFans Instagram @elvispresleyfansofnashville

CROWN JEWELS STOLEN OTD 1671. Colonel Blood steals Crown, Orb and Sceptre from the Tower of London. Once captured, the King pardons him AND awards him £500 a year (£112,000 in today’s money). What is going on? Blood fought with Royalist forces loyal to Charles I, but changed sides. Became a lieutenant in Cromwell’s army. Cromwell made him Justice of the Peace. On Restoration of King Charles II, Blood fled to Ireland. Led an unsuccessful rebellion. Escaped to the Low Countries. Returned to England and kidnapped the Duke of Ormonde, planning to hang him at Tyburn. Thwarted. Later visits Tower of London dressed as a parson with ‘his wife’. Views the Crown Jewels. His ‘wife’ becomes ill, Master of the Jewel House invites them to his apartment to recover. Grateful Parson Blood and fragile wife leave. Blood returns with white gloves as thanks. Much later, Blood offers his nephew as bridegroom for their daughter. Finally Parson Blood and wife come to dinner and ask to show their family the jewels. Master is bound and gagged. A mallet flattens the Crown to fit under the parson’s coat. The Sceptre with Cross is cut in half to fit in the bag, Sovereign’s Orb is stuffed down accomplice’s trousers. Master breaks free and raises alarm ‘Treason! Murder! The crown is stolen!’ The gang escape but drop the sceptre. They fire on the warders and the drawbridge guard and run along Tower wharf, chased by Captain Beckman. Captured before reaching Iron Gate. Crown, Globe and Orb are recovered but some stones are missing and some loose. Blood shouts, ‘It was a gallant attempt, however unsuccessful! It was for a crown!’ Later at private interview, King Charles pardons Blood and gives him land. Did the King fear an uprising? Did the King have a fondness for scoundrels? Was Blood an accomplice and the King short of money? Why would anyone pardon the Colonel?

COVENT GARDEN PUNCH UP OTD 1662 The garden of the Abbey and Convent, later known as the Convent Garden, was granted by Edward VI to the Earl of Bedford. The earl commissioned Inigo Jones to build fine houses for wealthy tenants, an Italianate arcade square and a splendid church styled as an Etruscan temple by Vitruvius. On the south side of the garden a small open-air fruit-and-vegetable market grew up, but then taverns, theatres, coffee-houses, brothels followed - and worse still - theatre. Convent Garden was becoming disreputable. On this day, Samuel Pepys saw the first Punch and Judy here in the portico of Inigo Jones’ Etruscan temple, more properly St Paul’s, informally the Actors’ Church. It was a marionette show, by Italian puppet showman Pietro Gimonde and based on commedia dell’arte. The English soon turned the marionettes into glove puppets. Pulcinella became Punchinello and the drama became punch up, murder, abuse, big sticks, gleeful violence and of course sausages. ‘That’s the way to do it!’ says Mr Punch. Since the market moved to Nine Elms, the Floral Hall, Charter Market, and Jubilee Market cannot supply fruit to throw at bad jokes, but there are street performers in the portico and excellent places to eat cooked food. An area once so notorious an Act of Parliament was drawn up to administer some control, is now quite respectable. The central building is a shopping and tourist centre, the Punch and Judy is a pub, and the Opera House still stands despite burning down so often in the past. A series of transformations: Just you wait, ‘enry ‘iggins, just you wait…

I’m one day late for “on this day”, however this is PERFECT for #throwbackthursday ! #onthisday #3yearsago yesterday lol (5/8/21), we attended a very rare regular season game in May. This was @mda.live ‘s first ever @warriors game at our new home @chase_center and we witnessed the Dubs set a new franchise record with 27 three pointers in one game. 🏀💦👌💙💛⚡️ Attendance was only allowed to be at 35% capacity, and this was only the Dubs’ 6th home game that fans were allowed back into the arena. I bought our ytickets right when they became available so there were not any issues, and they were actually lower in price than normal with no fees. I mention that because I remember there was a misconception that tickets were going to be more expensive than before covid, but that was not the case.. for us at least.

#OnThisDay in 1960, the FDA approved the first birth control pill. But today, our right to use FDA-approved contraception of our choice is under attack. That's why I've cosponsored the Right to the Contraception Act. Yesterday, I voted again to have the House to consider it.

The 1920s was marked by adulation of national heroes in various fields—aviator Charles Lindbergh, home run king Babe Ruth, and Grand Slam golfer Robert Tyre Jones, Jr. Another hero of the 1920s was Richard Evelyn Byrd, a scion of one of Virginia's most famous families. Lieutenant (later Admiral) Richard E. Byrd reputedly was the first man (along with crew member Floyd Bennett) to fly over the North Pole #onthisday May 9, 1926. Some experts dispute that Byrd actually reached the North Pole, but at the time his claim was universally accepted. Learn more here: https://virginiahistory.org/learn/richard-e-byrd

Happy 73rd birthday to Tom Petersson, born on this day in 1951. Thomas John Peterson is best known as the bass player for Cheap Trick. Outside of Cheap Trick, Tom Petersson has worked with artists such as Donovan, Willie Nelson, Mick Jagger, Harry Nilsson, Frank Black, and Concrete Blonde. He also worked with members of The Mavericks, Bobby Reynolds, JD McFadden and Paul Deakin, for a side project called “Swag.” The band released one album, “Catchall.” Petersson also appeared in The Ramones’ 1986 music video “Something to Believe In.” Before joining Cheap Trick in 1973, Petersson played in a number of bands, including the Bol Weevils, the Grim Reapers, Fuse and Sick Man of Europe. He started out playing rhythm guitar, but soon switched to bass. His professional career has been closely entwined with Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Nielsen, since the Grim Reapers in 1967. In 1980, he was unhappy with life within Cheap Trick, partly due to the unrelenting recording and touring schedule. During the summer of 1980, he worked on material for a solo album, and it was announced that he had left Cheap Trick on Aug 25, 1980 before the release of the band’s “All Shook Up” album. In 1987, he returned to Cheap Trick for the recording of the band’s “Lap of Luxury” album with the #1 single “The Flame.” Since then, Petersson and the band have continued to release albums and tour worldwide. only saw Cheap Trick once, in 1978, in Miami. I took some pics ⏮ and it was a lot of fun. “In Color” is the 2nd studio album from Cheap Trick, released in 1977. It was produced by Tom Werman, (Ted Nugent, Cheap Trick, Molly Hatchet, Blue Öyster Cult, Mötley Crüe, Twisted Sister, Stryper, Poison and many more.) More polished than their debut and considered the ultimate in “power pop.” #tompetersson #cheaptrick #incolor

Released on this day in 2006. “Best of Chris Isaak” is an excellent greatest hits album from Chris Isaak. It was re-released on vinyl in 2016 with very limited pressings. This is extremely rare on vinyl. I’m fortunate to have acquired it! It comes with a gatefold cover and on 180g vinyl. Most artists get the “best-of” release after only a few albums, so it’s pretty amazing that the 1st real Chris Isaak hits release didn’t appear until 2006, more than 20 years into the guy’s stellar career. There are 18 songs on the album, including his biggest hit, the breakthrough song “Wicked Game.” There are also 4 previously unreleased tracks. The cover of Roy Orbison’s “Only The Lonely,” is excellent! Obviously a major influence on Chris Isaak. Have any of you seen his short lived cable network show? It was really good. So happy to have this album in my collection!! #chrisisaak #thebestofchrisisaak #wickedgame

Released on this day in 1984. “Legend” is a great compilation album from Bob Marley and the Wailers. It’s a greatest hits collection of singles in its original vinyl format, and the best selling reggae album of all time, with over 15 million copies sold in the United States and an estimated 28 million copies sold globally. The album contains all 10 of Marley’s Top 40 hit singles in the UK up to the time, plus 3 songs from the original Wailers with Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston, with “Stir It Up,” “I Shot the Sheriff,” and “Get Up, Stand Up,” along with the closing song from the album Uprising, “Redemption Song.” Marley had fewer hits in the US with, “Exodus,” “Waiting in Vain,” “Could You Be Loved” and “Buffalo Soldier” the only ones included on this collection. Of the original tracks, only 4 date from prior to the Exodus album. A great collection but not enough for me. It should have been a 4 LP set. This was a Father’s Day gift from my kids yrs ago. #bobmarley #legend #reggae

Happy 77th birthday to Bill Kreutzmann, born on May 7, 1946. William Kreutzmann Jr. played drums with the Grateful Dead for its entire 30 year career, usually alongside fellow drummer Mickey Hart, and has continued to perform with former members of the Grateful Dead in various lineups, and with his own bands BK3, 7 Walkers and Billy & the Kids. At the end of 1964 Kreutzmann co-founded the band the Warlocks, along with Phil Lesh, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and Ron “Pigpen” McKernan. In November 1965, the Warlocks became the Grateful Dead. Kreutzmann remained with the Grateful Dead until its dissolution after the death of Jerry Garcia in 1995, making him one of four members to play at every one of the band’s 2,300 shows, along with Garcia, Weir and Lesh. “Aoxomoxoa” is the 3rd studio album from the Grateful Dead, released in June of 1969. It is one of the 1st rock albums to be recorded using 16 track technology, it’s considered that this era is the band’s experimental apex. The title of the album is a palindrome created by cover artist Rick Griffin and lyricist Robert Hunter. Rick Griffin died at the age of 47 after a motorcycle accident in August of 1991. He was thrown from his bike when he collided with a van that suddenly turned left as he attempted to pass it. Courtney Love has claimed to be featured among those photographed on the album’s back cover. This has been proven incorrect. Love’s father, Hank Harrison, had close ties to the band at the time, and had briefly worked for them in some capacity. The girl often identified as Love is actually Bill Kreutzmann’s daughter Stacy, who was the same age as Love at the time the photo was taken. #billkreutzmann #gratefuldead #aoxomoxoa

On this day in 1992 John Frusciante quit the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He was their guitarist from 1988 until 1992, and again from 1998 until 2009. He recorded 5 studio albums with them. He has an active solo career, having released more than 11 solo albums and 5 EPs. In 2015, Frusciante released his debut acid house album under his alias, “Trickfinger.” He has also recorded with numerous other artists, including The Mars Volta, for whom he was a studio guitarist (and occasional live performer) from 2002 until 2008. He has also produced and/or recorded with Duran Duran, Wu-Tang Clan, Omar Rodriguez Lopez, The Bicycle Thief, Glenn Hughes, Ziggy Marley, Johnny Cash, George Clinton, and others. At the age of 18, he joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers, first appearing on the band’s album, “Mother’s Milk.” The group’s follow up album, “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” was a breakthrough success. Frusciante became overwhelmed and quit in 1992. He became a recluse and entered a long period of drug addiction. In 1998, he successfully completed drug rehabilitation and rejoined the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their next album, “Californication” released in 1999, would eventually go on to sell more than 16 million copies. 2006 saw the release of his 5th and final album with the Chili Peppers, “Stadium Arcadium.” He went through a very nasty divorce in 2015, when a judge ruled in favor of of his ex wife saying Frusciante had to pay his former wife $53,000 a month in alimony. He was also forced to pay $71,000 for his ex’s legal expenses. “By the Way” is the 8th studio album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The album was released on July 9, 2002. Singles from the album included “By the Way,” “The Zephyr Song,” “Can’t Stop,” “Dosed” and “Universally Speaking.” John Frusciante is credited with writing most of the album’s melodies, bass lines and guitar progressions, and changing the direction of the recording dramatically. John Frusciante has said that writing “By the Way was one of the happiest times in my life.” The album has gone on to sell more than 8 million copies worldwide. #johnfrusciante #redhotchilipeppers #bytheway

Happy birthday to Robbie McIntosh, born on this day in 1950. Robert Broderick James McIntosh was a Scottish drummer, and a founding member of the Average White Band (AWB.) Before founding the AWB in 1971-72, McIntosh had been a member of the late 1960s bands the “Senate” with Alex Ligertwood, (Santana,) and “Mal and the Primitives,” followed by “Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express,” appearing on the band’s early albums. While working with the AWB, he also recorded 2 tracks that appear on the Herbie Mannalbum “London Underground.” McIntosh’s father is actor Bonar Colleano, who had a successful career in films, especially in the UK. McIntosh died from an accidental heroin overdose, at a party following a concert at the Troubadour in LA. According to a report in Time magazine, McIntosh and fellow band member Alan Gorrie took what they thought was cocaine, but was in fact heroin; Gorrie was saved by the intervention of Cher, who was at the party and kept him conscious long enough to recover. The party host, 30 year old millionaire Kenneth Moss, was then indicted for murder by a grand jury. Robbie McIntosh was replaced in AWB by Steve Ferrone, (who later went on to join Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.) On the LP released after his death, (“Cut The Cake,”) the band has a pic of McIntosh on the back cover with a dedication. “AWB” is the 2nd studio album from the Average White Band, released in August of 1974. The album contains their million selling single “Pick Up the Pieces” which knocked Linda Ronstadt’s “You’re No Good” out of #1 spot. #robbiemcintosh #averagewhiteband #pickupthepieces

Released on this day in 1986. “Standing on a Beach - The Singles,” is a singles compilation album from the Cure, marking a decade since the band’s start in 1976. The album’s title is taken from the opening lyrics of the Cure’s debut single, “Killing an Arab.” The man featured on the album cover is not a member of the Cure’s entourage, or even connected to the band. He was chosen because his appearance fits the aesthetic of the album they were looking for. His name is John Button, and he was a retired fisherman. According to the band’s 2005 biography by Jeff Apter, when asked why he agreed to allow his face to be used for the LP cover, Button’s answer was, “If I can help these youngsters break through, after all, why not?” He also reportedly said that he would buy a player and listen to one of the band’s songs “out of curiosity, just to see.” #thecure #standingonthebeach #johnbutton
