Sean S. Cunningham, director of the original Friday the 13th (1980), and producer of The Last House on the Left (1972). He was super nice. I was telling him about my parents renting the original Friday the 13th at Blockbuster for me when I was about 14 because I wanted to be Jason for Halloween but knew nothing about the character. Then when I pulled out my Last House posters he looked at mom and dad and said “you didn’t show him this one did you?” 😂 He seemed ashamed of the film but he thought it was super cool that I knew his family’s nanny Ada Washington was cast as the chicken truck driver that picked up the cops on the side of the road when their car broke down. He said she died in the mid 70’s a few years after the film. He wrote a super nice excerpt in my Crystal Lake Memories book and took his time with it too. I also asked him about Wes Craven and he said they were close friends for a long time even before last house and remained that way all the way up to the day he died.

Mrs. Voorhees (Friday the 13th) Mrs. Loomis (Scream 2) I honestly feel like without Mrs. Voorhees from 1980’s Friday the 13th there wouldn’t be a Mrs. Loomis from Scream 2 1997. They both pretty much have the same motives, They both want revenge for the deaths of their sons. Jason and Billy! And they both stopped at nothing to get that revenge. I love Mrs. Loomis but I don’t think she understood that the reason her son was killed is because he was a serial killer and Sidney killed him in self defense. At least when Jason drown in Camp Crystal lake he was innocent. Mrs. Voorhees did everything in her power to keep the camp closed by poisoning the water and starting fires but when that didn’t work she went on a killing spree and was defeated by sole survivor, Alice. Mrs. Loomis was the mastermind behind the killings at Sidney’s college, She had her killing partner do all the heavy lifting. Accept when she admitted to Sidney about killing Sidney’s friend, Randy. Just like Mrs. Voorhees, Mrs. Loomis is defeated by Sidney. Mrs. Voorhees definitely inspired Mrs. Loomis for sure, Even though Randy mentions Mrs. Voorhees and says she was a great serial killer. Both Betsy Palmer and Laurie Metcalf did phenomenal jobs as Mrs. Voorhees and Mrs. Loomis, I love them so much! In a brilliant move, prompted by the success of John Carpenter’s Halloween, director Cunningham put out an advertisement to sell the film in Variety in early 1979, while Miller was still drafting the screenplay. Filming took place in the summer of 1979, on an estimated budget of $550,000. A bidding war ensued over the finished film, ending with Paramount Pictures acquiring the film for domestic distribution, while Warner Bros. secured international distribution rights. Friday the 13th was a major box office success, grossing $59.8 million worldwide. Critical response was divided, with some praising the film’s cinematography and score, while numerous others derided it for its depiction of graphic violence. Originally, Betsy Palmer wasn't too excited about Friday the 13th and only took the role because she needed fast cash for a new car. As Betsy saw it, it was a quick $1,000-a-day paycheck and —in her humble opinion— nobody would ever see the movie anyway right?... and... well... the film was released and the rest is horror history. (For the record, Ms Palmer's opinion of F13 would eventually come around and she would embrace her status as a horror icon)

May 9 1980 was the premiere of Friday The 13th. After too many by-the-numbers sequels, I’ve really come to appreciate the original in this long-running franchise. The movie’s strengths include the killer-point-of-view cinematography, the climatic battle that’s pretty tough stuff, and the final twist stole from Brian De Palma’s Carrie. As far as slasher movies go, this one is well done, with the wooded campgrounds looking particularly eerie after dark. Betsy Palmer performs her role with plenty of gusto. The focus on horny teens getting killed right after jumping into bed (stolen from John Carpenter’s 1978 Halloween) gets tiresome, and you wish they had come up with a few more creative ways to off their cardboard characters. Ah well, still fun overall, although as far as franchises go, I much prefer Halloween, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Scream and The Exorcist. Friday The 13th was released May 9, 1980. To celebrate the anniversary of its release, I'm reposting my portrait of the series' original killer, Mrs Voorhees, portrayed by Betsy Palmer. “Did you know a young boy drowned the year before those two others were killed? The counselors weren't paying any attention... They were making love while that young boy drowned. His name was Jason. I was working the day that it happened. Preparing meals... here. I was the cook. Jason should've been watched. Every minute. He was... he wasn't a very good swimmer." - Mrs Voorhees Title: Mother (Friday The 13th, 1980) Size: 8 x 10 inches (approx.) Medium: Acrylic Paint On Canvas. This was a challenging yet fun piece to work on. It was fairly straightforward, but a tad more complex than I thought to get done. 🔪🏕️ I started by blocking in Pamela's face with some basic colour and tone. The idea was to get to basic sculpting done, and then refine it afterwards. I thought I could get the face done in one session, but because of the bold lighting, there is a lot of texture that took a while to build up properly. I also struggled with the colour too. I found myself going back to it several times after I had "finished" for the day, adding dozens of layers and washes to try and refine it as much as I could. 🔪🏕️ Once the face was as good as I was gonna get it, I began painting Pamela's hair. Again, this was straightforward but quite time consuming. I added a thin wash of golden brown so I could better map out the strands of hair. I then painted the strands with shades of browns, yellows, and blues. I added highlights and lowlights to better define them.
