It had been a little while since I had read a genuinely spooky novel and I was longing for one. Then late one evening I received a message from my book beastie, @bibliophileshanna She told me she was in the midst of a really spooky book and it was giving her the best kind of chills sense of terror. I immediately set off to procure a copy of my own. The book was Stolen Tongues by Felix Blackwell. Per the publisher- 🏔️ A romantic cabin getaway doesn’t go exactly as planned. High up on the windswept cliffs of Pale Peak, Faye and Felix celebrate their new engagement. But soon, a chorus of ghastly noises erupts from the nearby woods: the screams of animals, the cries of children, and the mad babble of a hundred mournful voices. A dark figure looms near the windows in the dead of night, whispering to Faye. As the weather turns deadly, Felix discovers that his terrified fiancée isn’t just mumbling in her sleep—she’s whispering back.🏔️ I really, really liked this book. It combines, folk horror, body horror and psychological horror in an effective way that creates real chills. Blackwell excels at creating a haunting and claustrophobic atmosphere. It begins with an unusual dream catcher hanging in a tree near the cabin and footsteps that circle the tree but appear to go no where. Blackwell, effectively sets up a haunting scene that will soon descend into full on visceral horror involving Native American lore, legend and possession and I could not put it down. If you are looking for a really good and eerie read, pick this one up immediately. Graduates/Teachers from Tom Savini’s school in PA will select a celebrity that’s on the guest list, recreate the fx look and prepare them for a photo op. This year, it was Kristi Angus from Jason X. Still as stunning as ever, she sat like a champ and it was wild to see her transform into her character “Adrienne” from over 20 years ago. My crossroad is being an author or the stability of a 9-5. My heart beats uncontorablly fast, and bile raises up as I think about what my future my entails. I dropped to my knees on the warm black pavement in front of me. The life I was told I needed to pick. The path that was forced fed down my throat my entire life. Get a degree, get a high paying job, and live for work even if it makes you miserable. Or write books where I could make an okay living, but I would lose the stability I have been chasing my entire life. I swallow down the fear that has rested in my throat. I opened my eyes and take in a deep breath, jumping to the path that leads me to being an author and living for myself again. "I'm willing to give my entire body, heart, and soul for this path." I whispered, saying it any louder would make it all too real. I committed to give my everything to chasing my dream. 🌵🏜🌵 Author Notes of sorts- picking this path to become an author is incredibly scary. Picking the path to self publish is even scarier. But I am willing to give my everything to this. I'm going to be honest about the scary parts, the good parts, the moments that feel like they are going to drain the energy out of you, and the parts that make you feel alive on this page. It was his artwork that initially drew me in, but I was sold on the story right from the start. Aylen just wants to lead a normal college life, hang with her best friend/roomie, crush on the hot boy in her class, play video games. Like most people in Salutem, she’s oblivious to the fact that there are Brainless (mutated/disfigured monsters who were once human - not your typical zombie) roaming around causing havoc and eating people - until one day she’s attacked by a Brainless and rescued by the mysterious boy in black, Jared. It’s done in a way that’s not overwhelming or confusing. Each POV has a direct purpose and adds to the depth of the storyline and characters. The dialogue was some of the most realistic and genuine I’ve read and brought the characters and their personality to life. I’m so excited to continue this story and see what awaits the goth and the nerd in Part 2. This would make a wicked TV series!

Splinter (2008) was one that kept popping up on my suggestions and I love a good creature feature so I was excited to check it out. The movie starts out with a couple on an anniversary camping trip; when the tent breaks they head back to town to find a motel. When they make the mistake of picking up a hitchhiker, they become hostages to a couple running from the police. Things are going as good as they can until they get a flat tire, they head to a gas station to fix the truck but when they get there there is something wrong. Something has attacked the cashier and now it’s after them. This was a fun movie. The beginning really had me anxious when they first were held hostage and I almost forgot it was a monster movie. The monster/creature is so cool and unique, while also being creepy and terrifying at the same time. The way it moves and hunts is nuts and the effects were actually pretty good. Overall not the best movie but it was a fun movie to watch. Cómo bien sabéis la idea de REQUIEM se ha convertido en una película de una hora, no se puede considerar película en sí pero es bastante más larga que la primera vez que lo proyectamos ya que hemos fusionado el primer acto y el segundo. Ahora bien, el proyecto está acabado y muy acabado pero no creo que vayamos a proyectarlo en el lugar de siempre pero también queremos moverlo por muchos sitios para que la gente conozca la idea de REQUIEM y todo lo que hacemos. One of my favorite films of all time. I know not everyone loves it. Some it’s too slow, some hate that the zombies are blue (Savini has spoken about that over the years). For me, knowing NOTLD and being fascinated with Zombies growing up, this was one of the first zombie films I purposely sought out. Having super strict parents didn’t help but learning how to use the VCR did as well as keeping an eye on the guide that came in the mail letting you know what was on for the week. Believe it was on at like 2am on HBO. Had to get up early to get the tape out before my parents found out. Think I labeled it Godzilla hahaha. Sorry got side tracked. Anyway, I think what I really liked about the film seeing it at a young at the characters. A couple, their friend and an outsider trying to get away and then finding somewhere safe. They find the mall first to rest then decide to stay put find out what’s going on and just start living again. Of course we know how that went but yeah I’ve just always enjoyed it. The FX were great and obviously far different from NOTLD. Of course that lead me down a path to Fulci’s Zombie, Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive and so on. Before anyone asks, I’ve watch the remake a couple times years apart and it’s garbage. Sorry not sorry. This week had the main feature of the near full catalogue of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead I had already been a huge fan of their movie Spring so then this week on a movie blog by chance I read about Resolution hence sparking that interlaced marathon of their work across this week. The worst of the week was easily Black Friday, proof you can't just throw Bruce Campbell in a film and it'll allbe ok. This was a mess from start to end playing off like a bad Evil Dead rip. Spring will always have my heart as a film but for the more hardened horror fan Spring is a love story more than a horror film the fact that she shape shifting monster is in fact incidental to the overall story. For the more conventional horror fans I would say Infested is a must, it plays to the arachnophobe in all of us with realistic spiders at swarm levels, this compacted down in a Rec (2007) style lock down of the building.
